Since I can't make the search features work, I thought maybe I'd ask if anyone here has personal experience of the Canadian folk group The Travellers. There was a long retrospective about the group on the History Channel this morning, about half of which I saw, and I really like what I heard. I will search out their recordings of course, but I'm interested in stories about the group and this seems like the first most logical place to ask. So what do we know about The Travellers?

Sorry if this has been discussed previously, I will continue my efforts to activate the search features.

Thanks for your interest.

Peace, Mooh.

It seems you have to (well, at least I do) use the Supersearch on Shorty.mudcat.org only. IT doesn't want to work on ragtime.mudcat.org

I looked up, and found this thread only:

Well, back in pre-history, I played with them for a bit. Seem to recall doing a couple of concerts and a radio show. The current lineup will be guests on my radio show in a month or so. Haven't got the details yet from heather (da producer). They've been playing for a longgg time.

I saw a film about them at a Jewish film festival two or three years ago. They seemed like they really wanted to be the Canadian version of the Weavers.

More than the music, what struck me was how much they seemed to truly dislike each other. A couple seemed to even dislike folk music. The one member of Travellers who seemed to truly love folk music, Sid something, was treated very badly by the rest of the group. First they voted him out of the group and then they'd let him come on stage if he stood in the back behind everyone else.

It was very sad watching Sid get stomped on by the others and keep coming back for more.

Jerry...Yes that's exactly the way the TV program made it appear. I felt very sorry for him, though I suppose there's possibly another side to the story there's still no excuse for the apparent humiliation.

Rick...The current line-up isn't much like the early sixties one is it? It sounded to me like back then they got along better and it showed in the music.

George...Thanks!

Masato...Thanks, I'll have a look.

On the show, the old tunes seemed genuine, but there didn't seem like there were many from the later years. Are they just rehashing the past now or are they introducing new trad (oxymoronic n'est pas) to the um...masses? Just wondering.

There's a newish Sony compilation? Anyone know?

Peace and thanks. Mooh.

When I first met them, the lineup was Jerry Gray, Sid Dolgay, Ray Woodley, and Simone Johnston (sp). Two of the current members Joe Lawrence, and Ted Roberts have looked in here occasionally.

As to their friction, I guess like all bands there aren't just two sides to the story, but probably dozens, and all of them excacerbated over the years. Kinda like CSNY.

Rick...Yeah, it reminded me of bands I'd played in years ago. I've been lucky to avoid that stuff lately.

The Travellers are at Hugh's Room in Toronto soon, or have been there recently, I'm not sure which. I really like the name Travellers.

Mooh.

The Travellers are scheduled to play the Windsor Folk Society Concert Series on Saturday, May 4.

Hope their animosity doesn't come through too much. I'm looking forward to hearing them.
