Subject: Spaw's robot in the news From: Mark Cohen Date: 14 Feb 02 - 05:05 PM For those who think old 'Spaw was just having us on last year about having a robot tinker with his heart, the lead article from the 2/11 issue of American Medical News, a publication of the American Medical Association, is all about his friend Da Vinci. I was a little concerned when I read that "The robot system has not yet been approved for heart, brain, and spinal cord surgery," but later in the article it did say that there is an ongoing FDA trial to use it for mitral valve repairs. What I want to know, 'Spaw, is when they're going to use it to operate on possums. And does it have a mustache tuner attachment? Aloha, Mark |

Subject: RE: BS: Spaw's robot in the news From: catspaw49 Date: 14 Feb 02 - 06:51 PM See Mark....I wasn't lying! Ya' know it's been 8 months and I'm still completely amazed that they could replace a mitral valve with the DaVinci. Two small holes..........plus the 4" incision to hand the valve in to the robot's arms. Absolutely unreal. After prviously having my chest cracked for the quad by-pass I was horrified at the idea of ever doing it again....But thanks to the DaVinci and the skill of Robert MIchler and his team, I didn't have to do it. Michler has been using the robot for almost three years as Ohio State is one of the hospitals doing the FDA testing. BTW, the OR team only works the DaVinci and Michler rarely does any other surgery without it now. I was fortunate to be accepted into the program. The folks in the OR call the robot "Lenny" and as they prepped me with plumbing, one of them brought it over and said, "We think everyone should meet Lenny." I do too. Several of the hospitals around here are opening new heart centers and all have a DaVinci on order. I was really blessed though to have Robert Michler too as he had more time on the DaVinci then anyone in the country at that time...probably still does. Thanks for the article Mark. And did I mention that the St. Judes folks who make the valves sent me a registration card? Really weird.......like I bought a toaster from them or something. But they included a nice plastic ID card which ought to help out when I go through the metal detectors at the airport! Spaw |

Subject: RE: BS: Spaw's robot in the news From: Banjer Date: 14 Feb 02 - 07:03 PM On page 73 of the March 2002 Popular Science magazine the re is an article on the Da Vinci. It is interesting to see how much technology has grown in the last few years! |

Subject: RE: BS: Spaw's robot in the news From: catspaw49 Date: 14 Feb 02 - 07:15 PM I should also have said that I was the fifth patient at OSU to have valve surgery done by the robot and only the second to have a new valve installed. Here's another article from February of 2001 only 4 months before my surgery. Time Magazine And you're right Banj.......Simply amazing! Spaw |

Subject: RE: BS: Spaw's robot in the news From: catspaw49 Date: 14 Feb 02 - 07:35 PM The article was written in February and was in a May issue. Sorry, I should have said that......By the time the article was out they had already done two valve repairs. I know because Michler had the article in his office..........And since you got me started on this Mark......The line Michler uses is exactly what is in the Time article. He gave me all of the gloom and doom prospects of what could go wrong and after we decided to go ahead he said, "I promise I'm going to take real good care of you." The man has a great way of looking at you and inspiring confidence. OK.......I'll shut up now. Spaw |

Subject: RE: BS: Spaw's robot in the news From: catspaw49 Date: 15 Feb 02 - 07:43 PM THOSE WERE THE ROBOTIC DAYS Once upon a time there was a workbench Where we would solder up a wire or two Remember how we beeped away the hours And dreamed of all the great things we would do cho: Those were the days my friend, We'd thought they'd never end We'd clink and bang forever and a day We'd have a lot fun, We'd compute O and 1 Yes we were new and really on our way La-la-la la-la la, la-la-la la-la la Those were the days, oh yes, those were the days Then the busy years went rushing by us We lost our RAM memory on the way If by chance I'd see you on the workbench We'd bleep at one another and we'd say Just tonight I rolled onto the workbench Nothing seemed the way it used to be In a mirror I saw a strange reflection Was that outmoded robot really me? Through the door there came familiar clanking I saw your form, burned wiring I did smell Oh, my friend, we're older and worn out now But in our CPU's we still can raise some hell Spaw |

Subject: RE: BS: Spaw's robot in the news From: InOBU Date: 16 Feb 02 - 07:39 AM Not only can this robot put spare parts in our Spaw... but it can open those big cans of coffee! The ID card is not so much for the metal detectors, Spaw, but, for when folks on the plane hear you ticking! Did you see the Japanese robot on TV this week, I think it was a Honda... designed to walk like a human, and to run when in rural Texas and any says " git the little foriegn car bugger..." I'm told he wears a bumper sticker that says, "I'd rather be a Rolls..." the wee Honda man, not Spaw... who wears a bumper sticker that says, TIMEX, and another that says, "keep back 200 feet" but I woont go into that... I think it is about time for a plug for my band... but, as I can't think of anything we are doing lately, I will close with, keep ticking Spaw... Larry |

Subject: RE: BS: Spaw's robot in the news From: catspaw49 Date: 16 Feb 02 - 11:57 AM Hey Plug-O-Matic.....I DID see the Honda robot....really unbelievable. They say they have another ten years of development to go......It's going to be a real "android" like thing.....I was really gassed with what it could do so far....the steps and all were simply amazing! Spaw |

Subject: RE: BS: Spaw's robot in the news From: InOBU Date: 16 Feb 02 - 04:16 PM I want one, and I want to teach it to play the fiddle, then, I'll finally be able to book the band without worry about bandmates walking... wait a minute, the little bugger CAN walk... what about the can opener that worked on you Spaw.... Think we can teach it to play the fiddle? Larry |

Subject: RE: BS: Spaw's robot in the news From: CapriUni Date: 17 Feb 02 - 12:27 PM Back in the 50's and 60's visions of what the 21st century would be like included flying cars and robots like Hal. They didn't include the Internet and robots like Lenny... and those things are way more impressive, if you ask me. We're living beyond our dreams, here, folks. But, mostly, we've been we've been too busy doing the actual living that we forgot to notice. The Jetsons got nothing on us!! God, I love this era! |
