Subject: Aussie Blues From: GUEST,Iceboy Date: 13 Feb 02 - 04:15 PM I'm coming out of Antarcicta in the next day or two. The weekend of th 22nd I'll be in Sydney. The following weekend I'll be in Melbourne. The weekend after that I'll be in Hobart, then I start heading north again through Melbourne and back to Sydney the weekend of March 15-17. I play guitar and want to check out any traditional (meaning pre-war up to about 1966) blues bands, artists, or clubs in those cities, or points between. I know they're out there! I'll be driving either through the mountains or down the coast. Anybody into Lonnie Johnson, Charlie Patton, Blind Lemon, Skip James, Otis Rush, Wolf, early B.B, Sonnyboy, Guitar Slim, etc. got any ideas? Any and all info/suggestions would be much appreciated. I've been cloistered away with my tapes and CD's too long. Got to get out and rub shoulders with some live blues fans! Cheers, Iceboy |

Subject: RE: Aussie Blues From: catspaw49 Date: 13 Feb 02 - 04:23 PM Living in Ohio, I ain't real tuned in to the Blues scene in Oz, but we have some folks who may be. BUT, I would suggest that you drop by over at Tweed's Blues where we have several active Aussie blues guys who ARE well tuned in! Post your message on the 'Tweedboard' and tell 'em Spaw sent you! Beachy or Pej ought to be able to come up with what you need. Spaw |

Subject: RE: Aussie Blues From: Charley Noble Date: 13 Feb 02 - 04:53 PM Iceboy - Last December my wife and I had a wonderful time participating in music sessions in Oz. You should be able to revive my old thread "5-String Banjo in Oz" by pasting that phrase in the Mudcat thread discussion search engine; I think you'd find some of the discussion useful. There should be some helpful Oz Mudcatters who are also willing to help. I'll temporarily refresh the thread. Cheerily Charley Noble |

Subject: RE: Aussie Blues From: GUEST Date: 13 Feb 02 - 06:13 PM Thanks, Charlie. I'll check that out. Any others? |

Subject: RE: Aussie Blues From: John in Brisbane Date: 13 Feb 02 - 07:55 PM THE Australian blues event for the year is the Byron Bay Blues Festival to be held over Easter. Finding the website should be easy. I know that it's a long time to wait but the Woodford Festival held just North of Brisbane for the week after Boxing Day also has a lot of blues (admittedly with a bias to more contemporary blues). Regards, John |

Play around at his site too, it's a kick! The Tweedboard will be changing to a different format/server so the messages will be lost. Anyway, keep stopping by both places. Tweed's is a really solid bunch of Blues people and you'll like it. Beachy's Links Page Spaw |

Subject: RE: Aussie Blues From: GUEST,Iceboy Date: 14 Feb 02 - 05:40 PM Thanks Alison. I'll definitely investigate this one further. I'm curious about the Backsliders. I see they're listed on the festival. May write to you soon. Busy packing now. ~Iceboy |

Subject: RE: Aussie Blues From: Callie Date: 15 Feb 02 - 08:30 AM Howdy There's a Sydney Blues Club you should definitely hook up with. They have weekly jam sessions and gigs on a couple of night per week at a pub in Annandale (inner Sydney suburb). Even though I drive past it a few times a week, I can't think of the name! There are also Blues performers on at the Basement in Circular Quay from time to time (I'm sure they have a website). I'm not in the Blues Loop, so can't help with any personal connections! Drop me a message if you want me to chase up more info for you. happy travelling Callie |

Subject: RE: Aussie Blues From: GUEST,Iceboy Date: 15 Feb 02 - 07:29 PM Thanks, Callie! I'll be in Sydney next weekend. Survived the flight off the ice and am now enjoyig the sights, scents, and sounds (not all of them in any of these categories) of the real world again. Heard a pretty lame self-proclaimed "Blues" band in Christchurh last night (tenor player was actually pretty good, nice big honking) tone but am not giving up! Thanks for the encouragement and the updates. ~Iceboy |

Subject: RE: Aussie Blues From: Helen Date: 16 Feb 02 - 03:03 AM Hi Iceboy, You are going to miss out on a pub blues half day tomorrow in Newcastle, but there aren't any really big name bands, except that one of the ex-Backsliders - Rex Honeyboy Hill. I seem to recall that this time last year - some time in late February - there was a blues festival at Frederickton just north of Kempsey, about 5 hours drive north of Sydney on the coast. There's not a lot of blues stuff happening in Nukes at the moment, but if you are going to be passing through here contact me by PM (personal message) and we can show you around a bit. Helen |

Subject: RE: Aussie Blues From: Charley Noble Date: 16 Feb 02 - 12:55 PM Nukes = Newcastle? You folks are almost as tasteless as some of us here in Maine. Of course, we also hosted a mostly working nuclear power plant for over 25 years about 10 miles from our Town of Newcastle; now they're trying to decommission that nuclear dinosaur. |
|
Subject: RE: Aussie Blues From: Callie Date: 17 Feb 02 - 11:23 PM The pub is the Empire Hotel and the website for the blues scene is: www.sydneyblues.com happy trails! Callie |

Subject: RE: Aussie Blues From: iceboy Date: 18 Feb 02 - 02:51 AM Thanks, Callie! WIll definitely track that one down this weekend.Speaking of nukes, doing HF radio messaging for the Coast Guard in Antarctica (mostly weather observations form our end) we'd joke about how the forecasters would sometimes screw up the formatting, and that if they weren't careful, they'd start a nuclear conflagration (impossible, actually, since all we handled there was unclassified messaging, but still an indicator of our rather twisted humor). Cheers, Iceboy

Subject: RE: Aussie Blues From: murray@mpce.mq.edu.au Date: 18 Feb 02 - 07:27 AM Charley, This is as good a place as any to appologize for not meeting you at Blackheath. I was not in good shape and in fact didn't attend the Folk meeting until two months later. Iceboy. I am an early blues fan myself. I divide my time between blues, hillbilly and classical guitar, making me a jack of all trades and master of none. At present I am trying to learn up some Carter Family songs and some Mississippi John Hurt songs.
If you think there is a chance of your going through the Blue Mtns, let me know at . I hope I will do better by you than I did by Charley.

Subject: RE: Aussie Blues From: Charley Noble Date: 18 Feb 02 - 11:07 AM Murray - not to worry! We did have an outstanding turnout at the Ivanho Hotel. And I'm sure we'll trek back there in a few short years. Blackheath was a great place to use as a base for exploring those rugged uplands. We stayed at www.jembyrinjahlodge.com.au, a lovely rustic set of cabins a short walk away from the valley rim. Had a lot of fun feeding the rainbow lorikeets after breakfast. |

Subject: RE: Aussie Blues From: GUEST,Iceboy Date: 18 Feb 02 - 05:48 PM Charlie: I will definitely be checking out the blue mountains. Got your e-mail and will drop you a line. I'm a big fan of both Maybelle Carter and John Hurt, Candy Man being one of my first finger-picking adventures too many years ago to admit! Now I lean more towards Blind Boy Fuller, Kokomo Arnold, Lemon Jefferson, Skip James, and Charlie Patton. Watch your e-mail. Hopefully we can compare notes (no pun intended) on some of these guys. Cheers, Iceboy |

Subject: To Murray From: GUEST,correction Date: 18 Feb 02 - 05:52 PM My last post should have been directed to Murray, not Charlie. Not that I wouldn't post to Charlie, ya know. Should have passed on that last double espresso! :^) Sleep deprivation is playing no small part, as well! Murray, I'll e-mail you soon. Hope we can connect. ~Iceboy
