Subject: Aussie Blues From: GUEST,Iceboy Date: 13 Feb 02 - 04:15 PM I'm coming out of Antarcicta in the next day or two. The weekend of th 22nd I'll be in Sydney. The following weekend I'll be in Melbourne. The weekend after that I'll be in Hobart, then I start heading north again through Melbourne and back to Sydney the weekend of March 15-17. I play guitar and want to check out any traditional (meaning pre-war up to about 1966) blues bands, artists, or clubs in those cities, or points between. I know they're out there! I'll be driving either through the mountains or down the coast. Anybody into Lonnie Johnson, Charlie Patton, Blind Lemon, Skip James, Otis Rush, Wolf, early B.B, Sonnyboy, Guitar Slim, etc. got any ideas? Any and all info/suggestions would be much appreciated. I've been cloistered away with my tapes and CD's too long. Got to get out and rub shoulders with some live blues fans! Cheers, Iceboy |

BUT, I would suggest that you drop by over at Tweed's Blues where we have several active Aussie blues guys who ARE well tuned in! Post your message on the 'Tweedboard' and tell 'em Spaw sent you! You should be able to revive my old thread "5-String Banjo in Oz" by pasting that phrase in the Mudcat thread discussion search engine; I think you'd find some of the discussion useful. Finding the website should be easy. I know that it's a long time to wait but the Woodford Festival held just North of Brisbane for the week after Boxing Day also has a lot of blues (admittedly with a bias to more contemporary blues). They have weekly jam sessions and gigs on a couple of night per week at a pub in Annandale (inner Sydney suburb). Even though I drive past it a few times a week, I can't think of the name! There are also Blues performers on at the Basement in Circular Quay from time to time (I'm sure they have a website). I'm not in the Blues Loop, so can't help with any personal connections! Heard a pretty lame self-proclaimed "Blues" band in Christchurh last night (tenor player was actually pretty good, nice big honking) tone but am not giving up! I seem to recall that this time last year - some time in late February - there was a blues festival at Frederickton just north of Kempsey, about 5 hours drive north of Sydney on the coast. There's not a lot of blues stuff happening in Nukes at the moment, but if you are going to be passing through here contact me by PM (personal message) and we can show you around a bit. Helen |

WIll definitely track that one down this weekend.Speaking of nukes, doing HF radio messaging for the Coast Guard in Antarctica (mostly weather observations form our end) we'd joke about how the forecasters would sometimes screw up the formatting, and that if they weren't careful, they'd start a nuclear conflagration (impossible, actually, since all we handled there was unclassified messaging, but still an indicator of our rather twisted humor). I was not in good shape and in fact didn't attend the Folk meeting until two months later. Iceboy. I am an early blues fan myself. I divide my time between blues, hillbilly and classical guitar, making me a jack of all trades and master of none. At present I am trying to learn up some Carter Family songs and some Mississippi John Hurt songs.
If you think there is a chance of your going through the Blue Mtns, let me know at . I hope I will do better by you than I did by Charley.

And I'm sure we'll trek back there in a few short years. Blackheath was a great place to use as a base for exploring those rugged uplands. We stayed at www.jembyrinjahlodge.com.au, a lovely rustic set of cabins a short walk away from the valley rim. Had a lot of fun feeding the rainbow lorikeets after breakfast. |
