Subject: Eibhlí Gheal Chiúin ní Chearbhaill From: lamarca Date: 30 Jan 02 - 04:04 PM I've heard this Irish air played by John Martyn with a lot of electric instrumentation, and have been told it's on Chieftains 3. Does anyone have a transcription of it, and info on its origins? Also, how would the Gaelic be translated into English? |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: Eibhlí Gheal Chiúin ní Chearbhaill From: MartinRyan Date: 30 Jan 02 - 04:54 PM "Bright, quiet, Eileen Carroll", give or take a few hair-splits, is the translation. I don't know the tune, offhand. Regards |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: Eibhlí Gheal Chiúin ní Chearbhaill From: Roger in Sheffield Date: 30 Jan 02 - 05:18 PM It is indeed track 3 on Chieftains three followed by Delahunty's hornpipe, played on a concertina I think |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: Eibhlí Gheal Chiúin ní Chearbhaill From: Phil Cooper Date: 30 Jan 02 - 06:07 PM Dick Gaughan also plays it as the break to "Flo'ors O' the Forest" on the Parallel Lines album he did with Andy Irvine. I think John Martyn was just using a fuzz tone played through Leslie speakers, with a bass droning in the background. Sorry, I don't know where the tune is notated either, it's a captivating one. I'll check my tune collections real quick and see if I can find one. |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: Eibhlí Gheal Chiúin ní Chearbhaill From: GUEST,chrisj Date: 30 Jan 02 - 09:06 PM Martin, would 'Fair and Gentle Eily Carroll' be closer to the underlying meaning? Yours seems a little too literal to me. |

Subject: RE: Tune Req: Eibhlí Gheal Chiúin ní Chearbhaill From: lamarca Date: 31 Jan 02 - 09:44 AM The reason I'm interested in this tune is that it seems to be a minor/modal variation to the tune to which Margaret MacArthur set "Them Stars". I'd like to send her a setting just for amusement... If any of you have heard both tunes, could you tell me if I'm imagining things? |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: Eibhlí Gheal Chiúin ní Chearbhaill From: GUEST Date: 01 Feb 02 - 07:09 AM is this the same as "Is fada liom uaim í" (one of the songs by that name)? |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: Eibhlí Gheal Chiúin ní Chearbhaill From: GUEST,Martin Ryan Date: 01 Feb 02 - 09:16 AM Guest The same thought struck me.... but I think its usually Máire Gheal Ciúin Ní Chuileanain..". Still there's got to be more than one .... Regards |
