Subject: Trac launched in Wales From: sian, west wales Date: 30 Jan 02 - 05:50 AM Whether or not you live in Wales, you might be interested in the launch of trac's (a development body for Welsh traditional musics) first annual development programme, . There's an article in today's Western Mail ("national newspaper of Wales"). I'll try a blue clicky ... Click here But in case that doesn't work, this is for cut-and-paste brigade: http://icwales.icnetwork.co.uk/0900entertainment/0050artsnews/page.cfm?objectid=11576975&method=full&siteid=50082 The article looks a lot more impressive in print ... big photo of Toreth (Gareth Westacott on fiddle and Guto Dafis on box) and Elin Wyn Jones (harp). Got good coverage on TV as well (with more to come). Trac extended a welcome via the BBC to Kim Howells (the Gov't Minister who made some ill-advised remarks about folk singers late last year) to attend some of its future activities. Anyway, thought someone might be interested. Trac already publishes a newsletter which goes out internationally. If anyone could use a copy, PM me. sian, west wales |

Subject: RE: Trac launched in Wales From: Skipper Jack Date: 30 Jan 02 - 04:15 PM Thanks Sian for the info. I saw a bit on BBC Wales News today (30th Jan.) and I read a bit about it in Taplas in November last year. I see that Geoff Cripps has taken over the reins. If it means an improvement in the promotion of Welsh folk music in the principality then it has my support.

Subject: RE: Trac launched in Wales From: sian, west wales Date: 31 Jan 02 - 04:43 AM The first project is Training the Trainers - designed to equip folk artists with the information necessary to work in schools and other institutional settings. We're working on programmes for publishing, community music making, etc. as well. It also looks like trac is keeping folk music 'on the agenda' with the Arts Council, WDA, et al. Wales Arts International and British Council are involved in the newsletter which seems to be doing good work internationally. trac won't be all things to all (wo)men but it's better than a poke in the eye with a sharp stick. Anyway, get yourself on the mailing list! E-mail the Administrator, Arfon.Gwilym@btopenworld.com. BTW, you didn't attend one of the early trac consultation meetings in Swansea, did you? sian |
