Subject: visiting Wales/Borders May or June From: GUEST,leeneia Date: 29 Jan 02 - 04:26 PM I'm trying to plan a trip to Wales and perhaps the Welsh borders in May or June. I always like to attend musical events while touring, but not huge events involving thousands of people. Does anyone know of any nice festivals or concerts that I could work into my intinerary? |
Subject: RE: Help: visiting Wales/Borders May or June From: Skipper Jack Date: 29 Jan 02 - 05:48 PM How about coming to the Gower Folk Festival which I think is the 7th-9th June. This is a small but very nice festival which is held in The Gower Heritage Centre on the beautiful Gower Peninsular. It is bit further than the Welsh border I'm afraid, West Wales in fact. But you can easily get there if you have transport?

Subject: RE: Help: visiting Wales/Borders May or June From: Llanfair Date: 29 Jan 02 - 06:07 PM The only thing I can suggest, leeneia, is the session at "The Sportsman", Newtown, Powys every Tuesday evening. If you get here, to Llanfair Caereinion, I'm sure we could arrange an informal session, if you give us a bit of notice. Where are you planning to go? Cheers, Bron. |
Subject: RE: Help: visiting Wales/Borders May or June From: Herga Kitty Date: 29 Jan 02 - 07:27 PM Upton on Severn (the English side of the Severn)festival is the first weekend in May, which is also a bank holiday weekend. Events which normally happen on the late May holiday (around the last Monday in May) need to be carefully checked, because it's Queen Elizabeth II's Golden Jubilee year, and the festivities have occasioned an extra day's holiday on Tuesday 4 June with the Monday bank holiday slipping to Monday 3 June. |
Subject: RE: Help: visiting Wales/Borders May or June From: alanww Date: 30 Jan 02 - 07:14 AM There's a (mostly Irish) music session (plus a few English songs) at the Charleton Arms, Ludlow on the third Friday of the month. Come fill up your glasses and let us be merry ... |
Subject: RE: Help: visiting Wales/Borders May or June From: GUEST,leeneia Date: 30 Jan 02 - 02:17 PM Thanks to you all for the ideas thus far. This is beginning to sound like fun. We will be renting a car, so we can go where we want. My DH (dear husband) and I like birds and geology as well as music, so we find that renting a car is the best way to tour. So few trains get into the woods, along the cliffs or up to spectactular outcrops. I'm saving all your suggestions, so keep them coming. We also like religious events as well as traditional, having gone to more than one Gymanfa Ganu in our lives. Bron: what kind of tunes do you play at your sessions? We play Welsh traditional tunes picked up at workshops-- Nyth a Gog, Rachel Dafyd Ivan, Gwcw Fach, Ty Coch and Chwi Fechgyn Glan Fri, to name some favorites. Are those tunes well known? Last Friday we played 10 minutes' worth of these tunes at a harp & flute recital. Since they followed an hour (or more) of unremittingly delicate classical music, the crowd went wild. How gratifying it was! |
Subject: RE: Help: visiting Wales/Borders May or June From: Trevor Date: 05 Feb 02 - 04:32 AM Hello leeneia, Hope you can make it to this beautiful neck of the woods. I can tell you that as well as what the others have told you there are sessions on the first Wednesday of the month at The Miners Arms, Priestweston, second Wednesday at The Buffalo, Clun, third Wednesday at The Cock, Brockton, fourth Wednesday at The Breidden Arms, Middletown and fourth Friday at The Six Bells, Bishops Castle. You, and anybody else for that matter, may be interested to know that there is going to be a weekend event in Bishops Castle from 24th-26th May. The idea is for a 'fringe' without the festival. There are going to be a couple of ceilidhs, a couple of concerts but the main action is going to be singaround and musicians' sessions in the pubs and cafes in the town. You can get a bit more info by clicking here, or p-mailing me. Cheers. |
Subject: RE: Help: visiting Wales/Borders May or June From: sian, west wales Date: 05 Feb 02 - 08:49 AM I've asked a friend who lives in that areas. He writes, "Mid Wales events are covered in Broadsheep, a listings magazine covering jazz, world, folk and traditional music, as well as cinemas and galleries, and issued monthly from Nicola Humphreys, Ivy House, Broad Street, Presteigne, Powys LD8 2AF, tel: 01544 260051, e-mail: broadsheep@aol.com" Although it isn't 'folk', I think the Hay Festival of Literature is on in that period - pretty mega event these days with some major names. They had Bill Clinton last year ... but I think they were a bit mean when they refused to let the local dress shop sponsor his visit. Just 'cause it's called Monica's ... Also, Gwyl Ifan (Feast of St. John's) is usually the third weekend in June, around the 18th? All the dance troups in Wales used to come down for a dance-around in Cardiff ... but I think they may concentrate on the festival at the Museum of Welsh Folk Life these days. That's become huge ... almost too huge, as you can hardly move there on these 'special' days, so not your cup of tea, I guess. You'll miss the traditional season for the Gymanfa Ganu. They're usually held around Easter ... although they're not very common any more. sian
