Subject: songs from 'Master & Commander'

Don't know if any of you can help, but if you can I’d be grateful...

I've just finished re-reading Master & Commander by Patrick O'Brian, and in it (in chapter 12) the main character, Jack Aubrey, sings 2 verses from songs...

What I’m wondering is if they are in fact parts of real songs, or if they were made up by the author.

The first is about the Battle of the Nile, and the lyrics given are:

We anchored alongside of them like lions bold free.
When their masts and shrouds come tumbling down, what a glorious sight to see!
Then came the bold Leander, that noble fifty-four,
And on the bows of the Franklin she caused her guns to roar;
Gave her a dreadful drubbing, boys, and did severely maul;
Which cause them loud for quarter cry and down French colours haul.

The second is just noted as 'another favourite naval song' and the lyrics given are:

There happened of late a terrible fray,
Begun upon our St James's day,
With a thump, thump, thump, thump, thump,
Thump, thump a thump, thump.

Any help would be appreciated
Cheers
JonathanC

The second set of words is from a broadside in the Bodleian Library at Oxford university which can be viewed using the link below

CLICK HERE For more information go to www.bodley.ox.ac.uk/ballads .....choose to browse and put "fray" into the box .....by scrolling down the options you can find the full explanation of this ballad

I also search the Bodleian for the Banks of the Nile but was not able to find your version..... lets hope that someone else can.
cheers

There's this site: Music in the Aubrey-Maturin Series by Patrick O'Brian, but the "Battle of the Nile" link doesn't come up.

Amazingly it links back to the copy of Battle of the Nile in the Dt here but I'm not getting anywhere with that as shorty seems to be down.
Someone else might have more luck

That appears to be a different song; the book from which it was taken actually called it Nelson's Victory, though that's usually one of the songs about Trafalgar.  There were a number of songs about the Battle of the Nile (Banks of the Nile is something else entirely) but none of those I can find contains the lines quoted.

This link to the DT file should work on any server:  The Battle of the Nile

I'll place a substantial sidebet that O'Brian found that set of words for "The Battle of the Nile" in some obscure source. He loved to include historical tidbits into what he was writing. You might also pose your query on the Patrick O'Brian website, although traditional ballads are not their strong suit.
