Subject: The Mayor of Bayswater? From: Morticia Date: 26 Jan 02 - 12:00 AM Actually, I know the words to the Mayor of Bayswater...but what is the tune that it is sung to called and what are the original words? I heard a small part of it tonight on a film called Dreamchild and, to be honest, it hadn't occurred to me that there must have been an original song before the popular(sic) rugby ballad. |

Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords Req: The Mayor of Bayswater? From: Morticia Date: 26 Jan 02 - 12:10 AM Thanks Gargoyle, but I was hoping to find a title for the original words....or perhaps The Ash Grove didn't have any and they made some up for the film? |
Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords Req: The Mayor of Bayswater? From: GUEST,.gargoyle Date: 26 Jan 02 - 12:12 AM LOOK UP the F---ing reference It, and the tune in the DT......

Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords Req: The Mayor of Bayswater? From: Morticia Date: 26 Jan 02 - 12:21 AM Thank you for your all too charming response,Garg, I DID look up both the MoB and Ash Grove....and drew a blank. Clearly not being up to your lofty heights of intelligence,( and did I mention charm?) that is where I stuck and asked for assistance. |

Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords Req: The Mayor of Bayswater? From: Dave Bryant Date: 26 Jan 02 - 09:33 AM I do know an extensive set of verses for the M.O.B., but is the "Hairs on her Dickie_Dido" version the one that you want. I don't know if my lyrics breach the "Netiquette" for this site. I'll PM them to you if you like. |
Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords Req: The Mayor of Bayswater? From: Bill D Date: 26 Jan 02 - 11:03 AM I liked this song (the dickie-dido version)a lot when I used to hear it bellowed at 2 AM, but after sitting down and READING the lyrics, it dawned on me that only about 2 verses and the chorus were clever at all! *grin*...(perhaps someone knows some verses that are 'cute' as well as gross and vulgar..(I have no objection to vulgar...just to 'stupid' and poorly constructed) but, as they say, "de gustibus non disputandum" |
Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords Req: The Mayor of Bayswater? From: Genie Date: 26 Jan 02 - 11:25 AM Dave, you don't need to post the lyrics, because they've already been posted in the "Rugby Football Songs" t hread. Genie |
Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords Req: The Mayor of Bayswater? From: Morticia Date: 26 Jan 02 - 11:29 AM No, I know the vulgar version, Dave ( blame it on hanging around with rugby players in my youth), it was the original Victorian (?) words as blickied by Jeri, thatI wanted.....thanks though :) |
Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords Req: The Mayor of Bayswater? From: Dave Bryant Date: 26 Jan 02 - 11:33 AM There are very few Rugby Songs which do have much artistic/poetic merit (possibly "the sexual life of the camel" and the version of "Eskimo Nell" on DT is pretty good) - but the rhymes for some of the sexually explicit words are often amusing the first few times that you hear them. There's also the competitive element of knowing more verses than the next fellow. While we're on the subject, Can anyone out there remember the Rugby Song singing (before about 1970) at "The Prospect of Whitby", Wapping, London. They used to have a band (I think they were Polynesians) who played the tunes on electric mandolins and guitars. The pub was packed - cars were parked for miles and local urchins used to offer to "Mind yer car for 'Arfa Crown - mister". I learnt most of my repertoire there - I could still challenge all-comers on the number of verses that I know to "In Mobile" !!! |
Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords Req: The Mayor of Bayswater? From: Eric the Viking Date: 27 Jan 02 - 10:32 AM Oh yes, used to love going to the Prospect. The Hawian guitar player was ace-loved lap steel ever since-can't begin to think of how to play one though. Saturday nights were bloody excellent-then onto the purple pussycat or Cafe' des Artistes, and then round Soho etc.(See "anyone remember Les Cousins?" thread Seems like years ago. (well it was) There must be so many of us who were in the same places at the same time.Maybe the years have gone with so many events that it is impossible to remember if we actually did meet. Certainly Micca, Moonman and a couple of others of us have met sometime in the past, but with no or little rememberance of the event. |
Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords Req: The Mayor of Bayswater? From: Keith A of Hertford Date: 27 Jan 02 - 11:14 AM I often wonder if the mayors of Bayswater have been aware of this song, and especially whether their daughters have been. I've seen it I've seen it, Keith. |
Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords Req: The Mayor of Bayswater? From: Bill D Date: 27 Jan 02 - 01:17 PM for a real...ummmm...'treat', here is an MP3 of the song, as the site says..", sung by real rugby players, after a really good amount of drink. They sound awful, are out of tune, and don't always follow the lyrics, but hell, sometimes that's the way it comes out. " A href=http://www.fawleyrfc.co.uk/Songs/TheMayorOfBayswater.mp3>Mayor of Bayswater (I cherish fondly the memories of hearing it sung well, and slower! by members of "The Boarding Party" and others who generally put music ahead of simple, loud bawdiness.) |

Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords Req: The Mayor of Bayswater? From: Dave Bryant Date: 28 Jan 02 - 05:04 AM Perhaps we should have a Rugby Song workshop at Stony Stratford..... Yes I remember some wondeful nights at "The Prospect" - I wish the chorus singing in many present day Folk Clubs was as enthusiastic. The quality of the singing could be pretty good - especially if there were a bunch of Welsh rugby supporters there. One of my favourite memories was a "Zulu Warrier" performed by scotsman in full highland dress. When he removed his kilt, he used his bonnet to retain his last bit of modesty. In the next verse, he threw his arms in the air and his bonnet continued to swing on his "Peggin' Awl" for a full further chorus. I must look at the "Les Cousins" thread - it got to be quite a fad to pronounce it as if it were french. I'd probably been more likely to go on to "The Troub.", though. |
Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords Req: The Mayor of Bayswater? From: Gareth Date: 28 Jan 02 - 06:49 PM Errr ! a Rugby Song workshop at Stoney Stratford might not be a good idea, we may wish to return. And are the sailing club versions of "Rugby Songs" part of the same tradition or not ? Discuss !!!!! Mark you now - as a Welshman from the South tears run down me trouwser legs every time I hear or sing THIS Gareth |
Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords Req: The Mayor of Bayswater? From: pavane Date: 29 Jan 02 - 02:41 AM My cousin used to sing at the 'Prospect' in the 1960's, but I only went there once. |

Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords Req: The Mayor of Bayswater? From: Dave Bryant Date: 30 Jan 02 - 05:56 AM Getting back to the original thread - has anyone actually found or heard of a non-rugby-song version of TMOB ? Did Bayswater ever have it's own mayor ? |
Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords Req: The Mayor of Bayswater? From: Morticia Date: 30 Jan 02 - 07:32 AM Dave, if you go up to Jeri's or Matsuto's reply, you will see there IS an original version of the MoB. |
Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords Req: The Mayor of Bayswater? From: Dave Bryant Date: 30 Jan 02 - 09:10 AM Sorry Morticia, I thought you were actually looking for a non-rugby version of MoB (like the "The Bailiff's Daughter of Islington) not "The Ash Grove". I learnt "The Ash Grove" as a child at school. It wasn't until I was a lot older that I learnt the MoB to the same tune (I don't know what the fact that you learnt them the other way round tells us about your upbringing !).

Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords Req: The Mayor of Bayswater? From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 30 Jan 02 - 07:46 PM There is a rugby song with a difference - because it's not the least bit rude - to this tune. Well, not just a rufgby song, but the national anthem of St Bartholomew's Hospital in London, at least it was, when I was a student there many years ago.
Here's the last verse - with a missing pub, because I just can't recall the name of the one in the first line of the chorus.
Twas fifteen years later And here is the Hand and Shears, just off Smithfield Square. |
