I heard a small part of it tonight on a film called Dreamchild and, to be honest, it hadn't occurred to me that there must have been an original song before the popular(sic) rugby ballad. |

From: Dave Bryant Date: 26 Jan 02 - 11:33 AM There are very few Rugby Songs which do have much artistic/poetic merit (possibly "the sexual life of the camel" and the version of "Eskimo Nell" on DT is pretty good) - but the rhymes for some of the sexually explicit words are often amusing the first few times that you hear them. There's also the competitive element of knowing more verses than the next fellow. While we're on the subject, Can anyone out there remember the Rugby Song singing (before about 1970) at "The Prospect of Whitby", Wapping, London. They used to have a band (I think they were Polynesians) who played the tunes on electric mandolins and guitars. The pub was packed - cars were parked for miles and local urchins used to offer to "Mind yer car for 'Arfa Crown - mister". I learnt most of my repertoire there - I could still challenge all-comers on the number of verses that I know to "In Mobile" !!! |

The Hawian guitar player was ace-loved lap steel ever since-can't begin to think of how to play one though. Saturday nights were bloody excellent-then onto the purple pussycat or Cafe' des Artistes, and then round Soho etc.(See "anyone remember Les Cousins?" thread Seems like years ago. (well it was) There must be so many of us who were in the same places at the same time.Maybe the years have gone with so many events that it is impossible to remember if we actually did meet. Certainly Micca, Moonman and a couple of others of us have met sometime in the past, but with no or little rememberance of the event. |

Yes I remember some wondeful nights at "The Prospect" - I wish the chorus singing in many present day Folk Clubs was as enthusiastic. The quality of the singing could be pretty good - especially if there were a bunch of Welsh rugby supporters there. One of my favourite memories was a "Zulu Warrier" performed by scotsman in full highland dress. When he removed his kilt, he used his bonnet to retain his last bit of modesty. In the next verse, he threw his arms in the air and his bonnet continued to swing on his "Peggin' Awl" for a full further chorus. I must look at the "Les Cousins" thread - it got to be quite a fad to pronounce it as if it were french. I'd probably been more likely to go on to "The Troub.", though. |

Well, not just a rufgby song, but the national anthem of St Bartholomew's Hospital in London, at least it was, when I was a student there many years ago.
Here's the last verse - with a missing pub, because I just can't recall the name of the one in the first line of the chorus.
