I thought the members here might be interested in this special. It will air on CMT tonight and again on Sunday afternoon. The show is called the Sound of Bluegrass and features great perrformances. With the recent interest in accoustic music this might just be another sign of the times. I worked on the special in a minor role and would be interested in peoples opinions of the show.

If anyone is video taping any of this stuff I'd love to have a copy.
I've already got the "Down From The Mountain"video, but my cable company doesn't carry CMT. (cheap bastards)

I've got plenty to trade.

Ron.

That's interesting there Guest Bob........CMT is running an entire week of Bluegrass specials and so far they've been pretty good, Even the regular shows have focused some on Bluegrass.......Saw Ralph Stanley last night on one of their "Top Country Video" shows as well as a Ricky Skaggs video featuring Bill Monroe.

I've been following the programs as well although I finally gave up on the music videos last night. They were mostly just commercial country music videos with an accoustic instrument thrown in to seem authentic. The incessant ads and stupid chatter took up way more time than any actual music. They kept me on the hook saying Bill was going to be on but when he showed up he was just Scaggs' silent sidekick in a video from Sgaggs' country superstar days. I love the actual bluegrass that Ricky has done over the years but I wouldn't walk across the street to hear what they push out as commercial country these days.

The Bill Monroe retrospective Wednesday night was nice. It gave Bill a lot more of the credit he justly deserves than that 12 year old DJ did last night.

I'm looking forward to tonight's program with great expectations. If it turns out to be a montage of videos, I'll probably look for better programming... maybe a nice hour-long infomercial on making millions in real estate with no money down.

      - Mark (who didn't grow up on MTV... or any other TV for that matter.)

I watched the program and mostly enjoyed it. I didn't time it but I'm guessing that more than 50% of the time was devoted to commercials. Rather like rock & roll radio that way.

Much of the music wasn't actually bluegrass but just some people applying accoustic instruments to whatever genre they were in.

I loved the pieces on instrument making. The banjo making piece was interesting—wonderful fretless banjos—but they kept using the word bluegrass when talking about it. Perhaps they figured the majority of their audience wouldn't know the difference between bluegrass and other forms of accoustic country music. Or perhaps there is a strategy, now that Bill is dead and Ralph doesn't pick his banjo in public, to redefine the term bluegrass so it fits neatly into their commercial model much the way the term country and folk now fit.

Not being a devotee of country music I've never watched this channel...just luckily stumbled on it as the program was beginning. As always, the music is way too short and the commercials way too long, but it was worth every minute of them to me to see Gillian Welch. Living in the back of beyond, I've somehow missed this fine singer and banjo player...am looking forward to a time when I can afford one of her CD's...anybody have a suggestion as to which one is best? I also liked the cuts of instrument makers...does anybody have a MonteLeone mando or guitar?

Without going into a load of topics, I'll just say that Mark pretty well nailed it. I was pretty much less than impressed by most of the entire week.

Monteleone Mandolins are available Here. I will keep you in suspense as to the actual price, but it is enough to stun most folks. Monteleones are one of the few mandolins (along with Gilchrists, and a few of the better known Boutique makers) that actually go UP in value as soon as you purchase them. He is actually better known for his guitars than his mandos, and many of them are works of art. Take a look at These babies.
