Subject: Biography, Top 15 TV Comedians From: Steve Latimer Date: 23 Jan 02 - 03:39 PM A friend of mine at work was telling me that Biography had a top 15 TV Comedians of all time show on last night. He couldn't remember them all. Did anyone see it and would you have the answers? Thanks in advance. Steve |
Subject: RE: BS: Biography, Top 15 TV Comedians From: Murph10566 Date: 23 Jan 02 - 03:53 PM I can only remember, ( and certainly not in this order): Robin Williams, Bob Hope, Richard Pryor, Johnny Carson, Bill Cosby, Jack Benny, Groucho Marx, Milton Berle, Carol Burnett, Sid Caesar, Jackie Gleason and Lucille Ball was Number One. Missing three ... Anyone ? |
Subject: RE: BS: Biography, Top 15 TV Comedians From: SharonA Date: 23 Jan 02 - 03:57 PM I didn't and don't, but maybe someone here does: Biography.com message board – who is the all-time greatest TV comedian? I also took a peek at the A&E website AandE.com but all they have is a teaser on the program schedule that says, "We won't reveal the list until the program airs..." even though it already has aired. |
Subject: RE: BS: Biography, Top 15 TV Comedians From: Steve Latimer Date: 23 Jan 02 - 03:59 PM Apparently Steve Martin was there too. He can't remember two of the three that you are missing. Thank you. I went to Biography's website, but it didn't seem to have the list. |
Subject: RE: BS: Biography, Top 15 TV Comedians From: catspaw49 Date: 23 Jan 02 - 04:06 PM I missed this thing and really wanted to see it. It would be hard to pick as my favorite standup guy along with Lenny is Richard Pryor, but his TV work was pretty small and gawd knows it wasn't his best medium! Sid Caesar was hilarious and had perhaps the best writing staff ever. Was Ernie Kovacs on the list? Groucho was always a favorite of mine too (obviously). Was Steverino even on the list? What a show that was!!! Carson was on forever and Letterman is popular and all that, but no one did it better than Steve Allen. If Lucy was number one, I think the thing was rigged! Lucy wouldn't make my list at all. Spaw |
Subject: RE: BS: Biography, Top 15 TV Comedians From: Steve Latimer Date: 23 Jan 02 - 04:13 PM Apparently Red Skelton didn't make the list. Come on folks, who are those last two? |
Subject: RE: BS: Biography, Top 15 TV Comedians From: Murph10566 Date: 23 Jan 02 - 04:19 PM You all came up with the other three: Steve Martin Steve Allen And Ernie Kovacs Shame on My poor, wasted brain... I'm proud to know you ! M. |
Subject: RE: BS: Biography, Top 15 TV Comedians From: Murray MacLeod Date: 23 Jan 02 - 05:07 PM A similar list for British TV comedians would probably readread
Tommy Cooper Probably the Monty Python team to make up the fifteen. Murray

Subject: RE: BS: Biography, Top 15 TV Comedians From: gnu Date: 23 Jan 02 - 06:40 PM I reported on another thread that Lucy "won" and that I agreed. But it was amongst those chosen. No way anyone could beat Red Skelton. Two seagulls.... |
Subject: RE: BS: Biography, Top 15 TV Comedians From: catspaw49 Date: 23 Jan 02 - 06:43 PM (Gertrude and Heathcliff) I was a Freddie the Freeloader guy myself gnu. Spaw |
Subject: RE: BS: Biography, Top 15 TV Comedians From: GUEST Date: 23 Jan 02 - 06:46 PM I'd second Spaw's list actually. How could they not include Groucho and Sid Caesar--and I would add--Jonathan Winters? What a lame list! And where is John Belushi and Gilda Radner? |
Subject: RE: BS: Biography, Top 15 TV Comedians From: Morticia Date: 23 Jan 02 - 06:49 PM Murray, are you thinking of Steve Coogan? I would also add, Stephen Fry Spike Milligan Hugh Laurie Peter Sellars Ben Elton |
Subject: RE: BS: Biography, Top 15 TV Comedians From: gnu Date: 23 Jan 02 - 06:49 PM It's just like any other award show... no way you can actaully do it. There's just too many. Hell, Spaw didn't even make the list. |
Subject: RE: BS: Biography, Top 15 TV Comedians From: GUEST Date: 23 Jan 02 - 06:49 PM Oops! Just reread that list, Caesar & Marx are there. But they left out most the really edgy comedians, didn't they? Does Eddie Murphy not count for Saturday Night Live either? Or Billy Crystal or Whoppi or Martin Mull--does no one remember Fernwood Tonight? |
Subject: RE: BS: Biography, Top 15 TV Comedians From: Murray MacLeod Date: 23 Jan 02 - 08:02 PM Yes Morty, Steve Coogan it was. And I like the rest of your list too. Except that I don't recollect Peter Sellars being much of a TV comedian. Was he? Ronnie Barker should be in there too. Murray |
Subject: RE: BS: Biography, Top 15 TV Comedians From: Steve Latimer Date: 23 Jan 02 - 09:49 PM From across the pond, how about Dave Allen? |
Subject: RE: BS: Biography, Top 15 TV Comedians From: kendall Date: 23 Jan 02 - 10:10 PM I'm with Spaw, never thought Lucy was funny. Maybe I have odd taste, but, I think Tim Conway belongs at the top of the list. Spaw, remember Bolliver Shagnasty? |
Subject: RE: BS: Biography, Top 15 TV Comedians From: Murray MacLeod Date: 23 Jan 02 - 10:42 PM I assume from the absence of George Burns name that he never appeared on TV in the States ? He was hilarious in that film with Walter Matthau..... Murray |
Subject: RE: BS: Biography, Top 15 TV Comedians From: thosp Date: 23 Jan 02 - 10:50 PM i'd have to include gracie allen and imogene coca on my top 15 peace (Y) thosp |
Subject: RE: BS: Biography, Top 15 TV Comedians From: Rick Fielding Date: 24 Jan 02 - 02:48 AM BOB(friggin') HOPE!!!? He MAKES the list, and Tim Conway doesn't? FIX! Oh, give me British comics anyday! Rick |
Subject: RE: BS: Biography, Top 15 TV Comedians From: Steve Latimer Date: 24 Jan 02 - 09:19 AM Rick, I'm with you on Bob Hope. But SCTV's Dave Thomas doing Bob Hope, that was classic. One SNL alumni, no SCTV alumni, no Red Skelton, no George Burns. HMMM. |
Subject: RE: BS: Biography, Top 15 TV Comedians From: Rick Fielding Date: 24 Jan 02 - 11:00 AM Have to agree with you Steve. Dave Thomas's take on Hope was amazing. Apparently Hope saw it, loved it, and didn't have a clue what it was all about. I think the show should have said "The fifteen best TV Comedy ICONS". Of course Andy Kauffman wouldn't make any list like that, but he was the American comic who REALLY made me laugh. To me, his biggest claim to fame was that even a year after his death, some of his FRIENDS still thought he'd faked it! Now THAT's funny. Rick |
Subject: RE: BS: Biography, Top 15 TV Comedians From: LoopySanchez Date: 24 Jan 02 - 03:12 PM Where's George Carlin? And I'd have to include Tim Conway/Harvey Korman as a single entry, at least. They should have left room for Redd Foxx, too. Just my 2 cents' worth (1 cent after taxes)...

Subject: RE: BS: Biography, Top 15 TV Comedians From: GUEST Date: 24 Jan 02 - 05:41 PM Have to agree with Rick Fielding about US comics their humour is not on a par with comedians this side of the dub. A lot of the US "in" jokes go over our heads. The two Ronnies, Morecombe and Wise, John Cleese, Marty Feldman, Arthur Haynes,Dave Allen,Les Dawson, Kenneth Williams and Maggie Thatcher, all a laugh a minute. Ard Mhacha. |
Subject: RE: BS: Biography, Top 15 TV Comedians From: catspaw49 Date: 24 Jan 02 - 05:45 PM The problem Guest is that same in reverse......a lot of Brit stuff goes right past us too!!! I think the Biography thing became way too narrow in focusing on the US only and they also seemed to waiver between funny in general and funny on TV. Too narrow one way and too broad the other.....Hard to pick unless you stay within some bounds somewhere but they might have set them better. Spaw |
Subject: RE: BS: Biography, Top 15 TV Comedians From: GUEST,Azaelia Brockhouse Date: 24 Jan 02 - 05:48 PM Spaw, you are the smartest! I never could figure out why people thought Lucy was funny. How about Dom DeLuise? I really loved Red Skelton in all his incarnations. |
