Subject: Sidmouth in Feb 2002 From: JudeL Date: 23 Jan 02 - 05:07 AM Thought I'd better start a new thread before we start getting accused of hijacking the Kiddiminster thread. For those who are not already aware Anchor Middle Bar Singers are gathering in Sidmouth, the weekend 22-24 February, for those who might be going and need somewhere to stay Tony has negotiated a special discounted rate for us @ £20 pp per night at one of the local hotels. More details are available if anyone is interested. Gervase, since you're posting about fines for non-attendance, does this mean see you there. Oh and have you got that fetching little number you wore last year ready for Wimmin's hour? Jude BTW re party, take as read you're invited, just hands off my spiced rum. |

Subject: RE: BS: Sidmouth in Feb 2002 From: Dave Bryant Date: 23 Jan 02 - 07:38 AM As one of those people who was responsible for starting the AMB session all those years ago, I hope it goes well. I keep trying to get down to the reunion (or the festival itself). This year, however, there's Stony Stratford one weekend and a Canal Music event at Foxton - further up the M1 the following weekend. I won't have enough energy or time to get to the SW the following weekend. Anyway give my best wishes to all those who can remember me (at least Tony should be able to). |

Subject: RE: BS: Sidmouth in Feb 2002 From: Dave Bryant Date: 23 Jan 02 - 04:34 PM I thought I'd put my comments on the beginning of the AMB singaround here as well as in the Gloucester Black Spot Pig thread. It started in the late seventies, Sheila Finn of Folk London was with me at the time and can vouch for it. Charlie Yarwood, Myself, and I think, Ken Stevens were looking for somewhere to have a session with Fred Jordan, Mervyn Vincent, and old Tom Brown (you might be able to work out the year from that). It was just as Melodeons and Bodrhans had started to proliferate to an unhealthy degree. The only spot we could find was the middle bar - there was a musician's session going on in the front bar and the usual dance out on the lawn at the back. It just carried on from there. A guy from Minehead who used to sing "Little Lize" was also involved at the beginning. Incidently, in the beginning instruments were allowed, but only to accompany songs - I've used both guitar and concertina in The Anchor. The rule was that the song had to come first. |

Subject: RE: BS: Sidmouth in Feb 2002 From: Gervase Date: 24 Jan 02 - 04:21 AM Aye, Jude, I'll be there - can't guarantee I'll be wearing the same frock; for some reason it seemed to lose its shape after that evening. I can't imagine how or why... ;^) As for keeping my hands off your spiced rum; that's a tall order. It is rather more-ish! |

Subject: RE: BS: Sidmouth in Feb 2002 From: JudeL Date: 24 Jan 02 - 04:29 AM more-ish, yes - remind me, how many bottles did we get through at Towersey? It tends to vanish rather quickly. |

Subject: RE: BS: Sidmouth in Feb 2002 From: Cllr Date: 24 Jan 02 - 04:53 AM I will be there as usual, look forward to seeing you all. How many mudcatters are middle bar singers? Cllr Remember Middle Bar Singers is an anagram of "Dirge N' Slime Bards" |

Subject: RE: BS: Sidmouth in Feb 2002 From: Dave Bryant Date: 24 Jan 02 - 05:06 AM Just for the record, I checked with Sheila and she thinks that the year we started the AMB sessions was 1977. |

Subject: RE: BS: Sidmouth in Feb 2002 From: Gervase Date: 24 Jan 02 - 05:48 AM Oi, Mike - that anagram's rather too close for comfort with my material! My motto is that any fule can be cheerful, but it takes a rare talent to make everyone feel really depressed... |

Subject: RE: BS: Sidmouth in Feb 2002 From: Cllr Date: 24 Jan 02 - 11:12 AM Officially The middle bar singers started in 1980 when Alvin Barratt and his brother took over The Anchor. There may have been sessions and singarounds in there before this date but the landlord according, to Charley Yarwood were not pre-disposed to the folk week. This information is from Tony Day and Alan White. Hence we awarded a clock to Tony Day in summer 2000 ( presented by myself and Skoda Chris) to mark our twentieth anniversary. There are a number of stories on how the middle bar sing started and who was responsible but the above is the official one. Gervase if you don't like that one how about "Balding red Misers" and also Gervase when on earth are we going to sort out the website.Cllr |
