Subject: New session in Beverley, East Yorks
From: Sir Roger de Beverley
Date: 21 Jan 02 - 05:38 AM

On Tuesday 29th January we are starting a new fortnightly session in the snug of the Sun Inn at Beverley. This is set on the alternate Tuesdays to that at the Hase in Hessle so as not to clash. Below is copied the text of our publicity posters that are displayed in the pub(minus the graphics and headlines). We already hold sessions in the main bar on a Sunday afternoon but these are really performances for the customers – the Tuesday one is meant to be different:

"An intimate co-operative where we can share songs and tunes, swap chords and tunings or just learn how to play with other people.

Ever wanted to stop someone in mid song and ask "what was that chord?" - "how did you play that run?" or just "what key are we in?" then this is the session for you.

This is a low-key get together that is not aimed at performing for the public but just helping each other to get better.

Everyone welcome from "absolute beginners" to "old pros" all you need is a love of music and a willingness to teach and learn."

Roger

Is it music only, or singing as well?

Maggie and I will try to make it for the first one. Although we're not 'absolute beginners', I'm not sure that we would like to be referred to as 'old pros' either! Should see you tomorrow at the Hase.

Christine and I will try to make it, lend a bit of support and all that. I will have a word with others. By the way, you lot on this thread, we have not seen you at the T&S in Hull (Sun night) for ages. John the Harp.

WisH I lived nearer to good old Beverley, I'd be with you. My Hungarian friend was proud to announce the she had been to Nellies Bar when she heard it mentioned in a conversation in France - so your fame is spreading!

Hi Rog, Good Luck with the sessions, sounds a nice idea. Too far away, unfortunately, while I am still on the shift work. Anyway, If anybody asked me What chord? How you do that? .+. I haven't a clue what I just played.

All the very best, I'm sure they'll take off. mandomad (& Jingle)

Hi Tony

You write: "If anybody asked me What chord? How you do that? .+. I haven't a clue what I just played." No change there, then! :-) Only joking of course - you know I have the greatest respect for your musicianship. BTW - have you heard Gifford's new CD?

There seems to be quite a good response to the idea of this session - hope they are not all too good for me to follow.

Roger

we are doing a Cruise ferry accross to Amsterdam on Sunday 17th feb (£74 for the two of us on a two night thingy). did you say there was music on a sunday afternoon in beverley? or hull? we could do that and then jump ship to leave at 9pm. Are you there every sunday? perhaps see some mudcatter types then.

John

So, you weren't just a figment of my imagination!

I think we had a good time - I certainly did. At one point I counted up 3 fiddles, 3 guitars, 2 mandolins, 2 whistles, 1 cello,1 acoustic bass, 1 melodeon, 1 banjo and 1 recorder.

We are back again in two weeks on Tuesday 12th and the Sunday sessions continue from 4-7pm each week either run by me, Keith or Tim depending which week it is(Im doing the last Sunday of each month)

Roger

Sunday sessions? do they clash with the first Sundays at Nellies....this week isn't it?

There's always Sunday sessions at the Sun - but they're a bit quieter on the first Sunday when most people are in Nellies. Hardened sessioneers have been known to do both. You can even end up in the Tap 'n' Spile in Hull!

Widder

As Les says some people go to both. When I was asked to run some of the Sun sessions I specified that I wouldn't do the first Sunday of the month because I was (and still am) a regular at Nellies - Pete, who runs Nellies, often comes to my sessions at the Sun.

Yes, even harps are welcome! :-)

Just to clarify, the Sundays in the Sun are in the main bar which makes them a bit noisy at times and we often play to the crowd who are not necessarily folkies - the one I run on the last Sunday is more of a session whereas Keith's are more dominated by Keith with contributions from others.

We set up the Tuesday evenings to be more laid back and less performance based which is why we use the snug which is very, er, snug.

Roger

This sounds really good. Some folk clubs in the early days used to do the same kind of thing, allowing people to gain expertise, confidence, learn new stuff, get deeper into folk music, make new friends, in short, all that the folk revival should be about. Congratulations on setting up this session. Much success. Burl
