Subject: What's the furthest travelled euro?
From: GUEST,JTT

Our local shop in Dublin had a French one-euro coin (€1, if that symbol works - which I hope it does, with 300 million people using the currency) on January 2.

I got my own first one - a €2 French coin - yesterday. Apart from that I've only heard of lots of French and German and Spanish euro being given as change around Dublin, no interesting Finnish or, umm, other ones.

Anyone got news of the more travelled euro?

Yay :)

It's the thing I like best about the euro - apart from the fact that I'm spending much less, because I just regard them as pounds so prices shock me so much I don't buy!

I went into my local (UK) bank to ask how many euros to the pound and they had to go and look it up, later they said that if I wanted some they would order me some as foreign currency.Sometimes I wonder whether Britain joined the Common Market or if Europe joined the British Empire.

We saw some German ones in Budapest on New Year's Day, they are not in the Euro.

My guess is that the Euro will become a defacto currentcy in Eastern Europe within the year.

By the way, I haven't a clue as to how to do a Euro symbol on my keyboard - but then again I can't do a pound symbol either.

MOOMAN - you can win money in bars with Belgian euros - they designed the head side so that the coin doesn't flip fair! True news! But not everybody knows it, he he he... which is why you can still win money in bars with them.

Does Windows 2000 have the symbol for the euro? Blackcatter, if you use Word or any modern-ish word processor, the pound symbol is available if you click Insert Symbol and select Plain Text.

Till this post I actually didn't know what the symbol for the euro WAS. Any ideas on how they came up with the design, or is that thread creep?

Got a portugese 1 Euro in Hamburg, Germany yesterday. So far it's the only foreign one I saw around here, although some french are said to be in the area.

French Euros are turning up in the border towns between French Guyana and Brazil. So I think those are the farthest travelled.

G'day,

Damn ... down here in Australia, I was hoping we had a report on radio-tracking the wallaroo (Macropus robustus erubescens) ... a shorter, stockier (and stroppier) first cousin of the kangaroo.

Actually, the new money in Europe has a good Australian nomenclature. As well as the euro mentioned above, the exercise was christened EMU (European Monetary Union), so we nearly have the set of bearers (kangaroo and emu) for the Australian coat of arms!

Regards,

Bob Bolton, deep in the Antipodes.

Maybe I'm being dumb, but what is the point in having various National Denominations of the SAME Currency???

Subject: Euro Coins??
From: Joe Offer

This page makes it appear to me that the UK has issued UK Euro coins for collectors. Is this true?
I also understand that although the Vatican is not part of the Euro Zone, it mints a Vatican Euro coin for collectors. True?

No, a private mint has issued what must technically be a medallion.

special edition coin are issued all the time for all sorts of occasions. There are usually special collector's sets available but most just go into circulation.

Most recent (Irish) example is the maligned (a wrong quote made it onto the coin) James Joyce commemmorative 10 euro coin which, unlike most, seems firmly aimed at the collectors market (there are no standard ten euro coins).

I got one of these in Canada, last time I was there. I think they're a fantastic commemorative coin, but I might be influenced by the guitar association ;)
