Subject: What's the furthest travelled euro? From: GUEST,JTT Date: 18 Jan 02 - 06:52 AM Our local shop in Dublin had a French one-euro coin (€1, if that symbol works - which I hope it does, with 300 million people using the currency) on January 2. I got my own first one - a €2 French coin - yesterday. Apart from that I've only heard of lots of French and German and Spanish euro being given as change around Dublin, no interesting Finnish or, umm, other ones. Anyone got news of the more travelled euro? |

From: GUEST Date: 18 Jan 02 - 12:04 PM I went into my local (UK) bank to ask how many euros to the pound and they had to go and look it up, later they said that if I wanted some they would order me some as foreign currency.Sometimes I wonder whether Britain joined the Common Market or if Europe joined the British Empire. |

From: Mrrzy Date: 18 Jan 02 - 01:18 PM MOOMAN - you can win money in bars with Belgian euros - they designed the head side so that the coin doesn't flip fair! True news! But not everybody knows it, he he he... which is why you can still win money in bars with them. Does Windows 2000 have the symbol for the euro? Blackcatter, if you use Word or any modern-ish word processor, the pound symbol is available if you click Insert Symbol and select Plain Text. Till this post I actually didn't know what the symbol for the euro WAS. Any ideas on how they came up with the design, or is that thread creep? |

Actually, the new money in Europe has a good Australian nomenclature. As well as the euro mentioned above, the exercise was christened EMU (European Monetary Union), so we nearly have the set of bearers (kangaroo and emu) for the Australian coat of arms! There are usually special collector's sets available but most just go into circulation. Most recent (Irish) example is the maligned (a wrong quote made it onto the coin) James Joyce commemmorative 10 euro coin which, unlike most, seems firmly aimed at the collectors market (there are no standard ten euro coins). |
