Subject: French Canadian Folk Song From: Jim Krause Date: 16 Jan 02 - 05:55 PM I'm looking for the melody to both of these French Canadian folk songs V'LA L'BON VENT and EN ROULANT MA BOULE. I think there is something disconnected because the sound file for V'la L'Bon Vent doesn't play. Any one know of a good recording of both of these two songs? I need them for a presentation I'm making for the Lewis & Clark Bicentennial workshop in Louisville, KY in March. Jim |

Subject: RE: Help: French Canadian Folk Song From: Dicho (Frank Staplin) Date: 16 Jan 02 - 06:32 PM V'Là L'Bon Vent is in the RCA set, CS-100, Canadian Folk Songs, LP # 7, side A, sung by Jacques Labrecque. I couldn't find your second title, but could it be Le Bal Chez Boulé ? (LP # 9, side B). This has a refrain that seems to have been borrowed from a canoe-paddling song, but concerns a back-country man who can't dance and gets thrown out of the party. Also sung by Jacques LaBrecque. The LPs are also labeled Canada International Classica, and were impressed in Montreal. The box set also bears the CBC label. I don't know if this album is still available But look in the RCA and CBC (Canada Broadcasting Corp.) catalogues for a re-issue on cds. The Midi of V'Là L'Bon Vent seems to be OK now. |

Subject: RE: Help: French Canadian Folk Song From: Mary in Kentucky Date: 16 Jan 02 - 08:06 PM Whoa, Jim, did you say Louisville? More details please, is this open to the public? RE: Lewis and Clark -- I guess you saw Ken Burns' special on Lewis and Clark. He used the tune "Beechspring" as background music, and it was gorgeous. Also, I guess you know all about L & C's journey. I was Fibula Mattock's Secret Santa and sent her some info from the Falls of the Ohio State Park across the Ohio River from Louisville. It really is a fascinating story. I would recommend the Ken Burns Special to anyone. |

Subject: RE: Help: French Canadian Folk Song From: Mrrzy Date: 17 Jan 02 - 09:10 AM I have En Roulant on one album, Chantons en Francais by Alan Mills. It has a counterpart of French Folk Songs Sung In English, which has the exact same songs by the same artist (of sea chanty fame), only in English. So one record has En Roulant Ma Boule Roulant, en roulant ma boule, and the other has Roll the Ball O Roll it Along, Roll along the Ball-O. I have V'la le Bon Vent by Shep Ginandes. |
Subject: RE: Help: French Canadian Folk Song From: Jim Krause Date: 17 Jan 02 - 02:15 PM Mary in KY, To answer some of your questions: The L&C Symposium is being sponsored by the US Army Corps of Engineers and will be held the week end of March 15-17 at Locust Grove Historic House in Louisville. I don't know what attendance is going to be, but I read in the fine print that if there is room the public may attend the lectures. The only way I know how to get further information is by contacting Ken Wilk. Yeah, I saw the Ken Burns special on L&C. The history was good, the re-enactors on the keelboat were pretty good, but I was disapointed in the music. I think he could have done better at using period tunes played on period instruments. "Beech Spring" was a good choice, however, but "Shenandoah" is too late by about a decade. Why he didn't use the two voyageur chansons that started this thread, I'll never understand. English naturalist John Bradbury made the trip up the Missouri River in 1811 aboard a keelboat with fur trader Manuel Lisa. He recorded in his journal a fragment of the song En Roulant Ma Boule. I suspect that Pvt. Peter Cruzatte was quite familiar with this song, having served the St. Louis French fur traders as a trader before he enlisted in the L&C Corps of Discovery. Thanks to all those who answered. JK |
