Subject: Stanley Unwin - RIP From: Fiolar Date: 14 Jan 02 - 08:15 AM Sadly the death in Daventry, Northants, has been announced of the comedian and actor, Stanley Unwin. Born in 1911 in South Africa, he joined the BBC in 1940 as an engineer. He will be best remembered for the "language" he invented, namely "Unwinese" which was a mixture of gobbledegook and "Spoonerisms." Known as "Professor" he was a genuine comedian of the old school and watching him on televsion explaining something or being interviewed was enough to make anyone break into fits of laughter. He also appeared in a number of films including "Carry on Regardless" (1961) and "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang." (1968). With the greats. |

Subject: RE: OBIT: Stanley Unwin - RIP From: Skipjack K8 Date: 14 Jan 02 - 08:37 AM Deep joy not. I suspect he was an, if not the inspiration for Ronnie Barker. Skipjack |
Subject: RE: OBIT: Stanley Unwin - RIP From: Dave Bryant Date: 14 Jan 02 - 12:42 PM I once saw him on the box (might have been "That's Life") teamed up with Patrick Moore as two scientists showing a group of American Tourists around the Windsor sewerage works where they claimed that you could see the Royal Turds from the castle. Although the main point of the item was that you could get some tourists to pay for anything (some wanted samples of the effluent!), the two of them were hilarious. On the down side, I do remember that he starred in the first television advert for keg beer (I think that it was Flowers). |
Subject: RE: OBIT: Stanley Unwin - RIP From: GUEST,RolyH Date: 14 Jan 02 - 02:05 PM I best remember him for his 'links' on the Small Faces album 'Odgens Nut Gone Flake'(the one with the round sleeve) |

Subject: RE: OBIT: Stanley Unwin - RIP From: Bert Date: 15 Jan 02 - 12:11 AM .For the best picket in a brewflade pick Flowers. What's the difference between being unique and being a genious? Probably nothing. You can't say that he was one of the greatest because he was one of a kind. His genious was equal to Lewis Carrol, Kenneth Willaims and Ronnie Barker put together |
Subject: RE: OBIT: Stanley Unwin - RIP From: GUEST,Chris B (Born Again Scouser) Date: 15 Jan 02 - 09:23 AM I still have a recording somewhere of an interview he did with the bloke who did the voices for Bill and Ben (who answers all his questions in character). I wonder if the BBC could be persuaded to repeat it. Pure magic. |

Subject: RE: OBIT: Stanley Unwin - RIP From: Mr Red Date: 15 Jan 02 - 01:28 PM He used to tell the story that the Unwinese was born one day when he had to getr into and event with his equipment and in the hurry he either din't have or forgot his pass. The wagon rolled up to the gat and as soon as the jobsworth was approaching Stanley told him it was something along the lines of "c r teasy deliverables for hrrrmph at the half K throom voltimeter" and put his foot down. Perhaps the passenger was the producer, a carreer was born. Sortimosted. |
