Subject: Free Basenji! Non Music!! From: Sorcha Date: 09 Jan 02 - 06:55 PM FREE Basenji bitch to the Perfect Home! JoJo has been causing Gang Wars among the dogs at her house. She needs a Forever Home. New owner has to pass rigid qualification exam. (No joke) She is a brindle; not common in Basenjis and a sweetheart clown who loves everybody with 2 legs, especially children.
Dog would be free to the right home. If very far from me, (eastern Wyoming, US) new owner would need to either come get her or pay shipping after the interviews. Current owner/breeder reserves the right to make all final decisions regarding placement of the dog.
If interested, contact me by e mail or Personal Message and I will give your application to the breeder. Serious inquiries only, please.
Absolute Conditions!! Fenced yard—4 ft. minimum
Would Be Nice Conditions: Children—about 6 and up This IS for real. |

Subject: RE: BS: Free Basenji! Non Music!! From: Bob Bolton Date: 09 Jan 02 - 07:20 PM G'day Sorcha, You did not include: Must not play fiddle! A friend had a male Basenji some years back that nearly ruined his fiddle playing. The moment he put bow to strings, no matter where that damned Basenji was, it would rush in, sit down at his feet, throw its head back and howl! I can only assume it had a hardwired "join in with the pack howl" reflex that identifies the sound of the fiddle with race memories of the African Veldt. I would also query the "Fenced yard—4 ft. minimum". On the basis of this one, I would suggest 6 ft. with overhanging wire entanglements. Basenjis may be a bit short of the average cat's climbing ability ... but this one was over a 5 ft. fence like greased lightning. Regard(les), Bob Bolton |

Subject: RE: BS: Free Basenji! Non Music!! From: Sorcha Date: 09 Jan 02 - 07:23 PM She does NOT bite, at least not humans. She is in big trouble for biting her pack-mates. Yes, Bob, taller would be better, but she has been in a 4' fence and never escaped. She is not prone to digging, either. She will "yodel" to (with?) a harmonica. |
Subject: RE: BS: Free Basenji! Non Music!! From: gnu Date: 09 Jan 02 - 07:24 PM Howl ? I thought they are the dog that does not bark ??? |
Subject: RE: BS: Free Basenji! Non Music!! From: Sorcha Date: 09 Jan 02 - 07:27 PM gnu, they don't bark--but they are NOT silent! They howl, sing, yodel, etc. It's just not what you expect out of a dog. |
Subject: RE: BS: Free Basenji! Non Music!! From: Cobble Date: 09 Jan 02 - 07:54 PM Sorcha.... Love the conditions requred to take this dog , hope she soon finds her forever home. I wish more people homing dogs would take as much care as this, there would be far fewer strays and bad owners don't you think? Our Skye Terriers send love to the Basenji.

Subject: RE: BS: Free Basenji! Non Music!! From: catspaw49 Date: 09 Jan 02 - 08:23 PM I wish all breeders would spend the time and effort required to assure a good and forever homes for their dogs. I think some may at times overdo it a bit and with a little education beforehand, people can enjoy a breed they might not know as much about. But in the main, if more would use this type of thing and some common sense and judgement, all dogs would be the better for it. Too many people want a unique or trendy breed and then find the dog to be a total pain in the ass to them. At that point I think we need to cull off the owhers and not the dogs. Spaw |
Subject: RE: BS: Free Basenji! Non Music!! From: Cobble Date: 09 Jan 02 - 08:37 PM Spaw.. how very true. Sorcha.. we hope to be at Crufts, one day to show and one day to display on the Skye Terrier stand at 'Discover Dogs'. This is an exhibition for all breeds reistered with the UK Kennel Club. The aim is to help educate the public in canine care. It is a very busy day but rewarding and my dog Somhairle loves the attention of 'his public' ( it could be to do with doggie treats) *BG* Mrs. C |
Subject: RE: BS: Free Basenji! Non Music!! From: Sorcha Date: 09 Jan 02 - 08:38 PM You're right, spaw. The woman who owns this dog is her breeder, and JoJo has never had a different home. This is not a "return" dog. My friend (the breeder) currently has 8 Basenjis. 3 males (2 neutered) and 5 females, one neutered. She was hoping to use JoJo for breeding stock, but JoJo keeps causing problems with the other bitches in the house.
JoJo is the "least" show-able of them all, so it's going to be JoJo that goes. Her puppies sell for $350.00, but her "placements" are free. This could be a real deal for someone who wants a Basenji. Her requirements are quite strict, and as far as I know, she has never had a "return" dog. The only Return my Corgi breeder has ever had was a sad one. The Corgi witnessed his human Dad kill his human Mom........and was a basket case afterwards. It was 3 days before the murder was discovered and the Corgi spent all 3 days under the toilet in the bathroom where his dead Mom was. She did finally place in a great home, though, and he is doing just fine! |
Subject: RE: BS: Free Basenji! Non Music!! From: Cobble Date: 10 Jan 02 - 01:43 PM It's no fun when two bitches don't get on, my two (mother & daughter ) hate the sight of each other. It is a bore keeping them apart but we manage because we love 'em. Any takers yet for JoJo ? |
Subject: RE: BS: Free Basenji! Non Music!! From: GUEST,Philippa Date: 10 Jan 02 - 02:50 PM If I lived in your country I might jump at the offer Lovely dog. And as a previous sight-hound owner I qualify (whippets) though I've never thought of basenjis as being a sighthound like a greyhound, saluki, borzoi, deerhound, wolfhound, Ibizan hound. But I do play fiddle. Once at a dog show, I think it was the time I visited Crufts, I actually heard a basenji BARK! Just a single yap, but a real bark not a basenji howl. I had one whippet who was very good with all humans but also ran aggressively at other bitches. She was well trained, but I had to keep an eye on her and order her to my side if I spied a bitch. She also only came in heat once a year, isn't that typical of basenjis? |
Subject: RE: BS: Free Basenji! Non Music!! From: Sorcha Date: 10 Jan 02 - 03:17 PM None yet, other than Philippa, and I don't think we are going to do that, even if we were able, grin! |
Subject: RE: BS: Free Basenji! Non Music!! From: SharonA Date: 10 Jan 02 - 04:54 PM Darn. I know someone who is a Basenji lover but she already has two, one of whom is female. Sorry. I'm not familiar with the term "Sight Hound"; what does that mean? |
Subject: RE: BS: Free Basenji! Non Music!! From: Sorcha Date: 10 Jan 02 - 04:55 PM Hounds that hunt/course by sight instead of smell. Afghan, Borzoi, Wolfhound, Deerhound, Basenji, etc. |
Subject: RE: BS: Free Basenji! Non Music!! From: annamill Date: 11 Jan 02 - 09:56 AM Sorcha, I have heard that this dog cries real tears when upset. Is this true? I hope you find a good home for this baby. Annamill |
Subject: RE: BS: Free Basenji! Non Music!! From: Sorcha Date: 11 Jan 02 - 10:36 AM I doubt it, but I don't know for sure. I'll find out. Basenji's are also one of the least shedding, most hypo-allerginic breeds.......... |
Subject: RE: BS: Free Basenji! Non Music!! From: Sorcha Date: 11 Jan 02 - 11:22 AM Answer to annamill's question--yes, it is true! I am surprised! |
