I've mentioned this (reasonably) young Luthier before, but I've just played two more of his amazing creations (that makes five in total) and I'm simply discombobulated at what he's accomplished. Describing their physical appearance would be difficult, but suffice to say, if you need a traditional "look" you ain't gonna be interested in his newest models, but from a sheer 'sound, volume, and presence' point of view these are the finest instruments I've played. Period. The workmanship is superb, and visually.....well you'll have to see for yourself
clicky

I'd liken them a bit to the best of the "Macaferri" style guitars, with a huge "voice" but a much more versatile sound. I tried some Merle Travis style, up and down the neck, on the steel string (there's also a classical with a REALLY unusual design) and I've never played faster or cleaner.
They're pricey, but no more so than a quality Taylor, Martin or Collings, and as we know, Luthiers better NOT be in it for the money!

I don't have any personal stake in this. I know Allan, but only bump into him once or twice a year.....but....since I love visiting music stores (on the road or in town) and seeing what's new (and old) I've played a great many of the available brands and models. These simply knock me out.

Cheers

Rick

Well Bob, it would take my J-50 plus my antique Martin, but I'm kind of attached to them.

You never know though........

Rick, it certainly is interesting in appearance. The small sound hole seems odd. Is this a 'Fingerstyle Guitar' primarily? I've never played a Macaferri, but I've heard recordings. What would El Doc sound like on this Beardsell?

By the way you are apparently trying to reinfect me with GAF (Guitar Acquisition Fever), and I've only just gotten over the Larivee!

Oh well, I'd as soon catch it from you as anyone. Oh, have you seen my lyric request for "Who will pray for me?"

cheers, Chance

Chance, it strikes as the beardsell would be a fine fingerpicking guitar. As a hard flatpicking one, I think it might be unsurpassed. It's versatility struck me the first time I played one. The most unusual feature is the small soundhole on the top. It just shoots the sound up into your face! No need for monitor speakers with this baby.

The weirdest part of the guitar is that you can just look inside it through the portholes. Shouldn't work, but oh boy, does it!

Heather.....oh Heather.........Let me tell you that Rick is about to start on his acquisition plans to buy one of these things. No use putting up too much of a fuss, but see if you can't work out something to get a promise for the future.....say a guaranteed 5 years no-buy thing and a lot of new gardening equipment. It is beyond all belief that Rick will not have one of these within the year so just resign yourself to that, but go for some goodies of your own.

Rick, quit beating around the bush and just say you're gonna' have to have one. Glad it sounds good, looks like a Breedlove sorta'.......Enjoy! I say that in advance so I won't have to post to the thread you start when you bring it home.

Spaw

Well Jeri, she has to start negotiations somewhere and I think 5 years makes a better starting point then say divorce court. I'll leave it up to Heather.

Well, Rick, just maybe that's what a guitar is supposed to look like. I'd love to try one, even though I know that's dangerous ground to tread on.

Played a bunch of Beardsells at the Guitar Summit (were you there?) in Goderich last September where Alan was showing them. Very nice indeed. Great looks, great feel, and best of all, great sound. I like the way he steps outside of convention to build a guitar that still attracts on all levels, at least for me. Also shown was a mandolin, I think it actually belonged to Brian Teheny (Irish trad musician of some note), though it may have been just like Brian's.

Thanks Rick, for bringing this up here. Beardsell deserves the attention.

So many guitars, so little time!

Peace, Mooh.

The guitars sound great. I've emailed him for store info.

Jeri, I'm getting thicker around the middle but I haven't reached Fat Chance yet. I am no longer 'Slim Chance, however!

Small hole at the top? I didn't see that. Innnterrestinggg.

Thanks for posting this Rick...looks interesting and I'm always fascinated by these odd little innovations which shouldn't but do work.

I'm not getting into the GAS argument as I tried to sneak a nice little 20s Lyon and Healy short-neck tenor banjo past Lady McMoo last year without her knowledge. I forgot that she has "radar" specifically for these things, finely honed and tuned over many years with an ex-GAS junkie. I was luckily permitted to acquire said instrument (which incidentally she likes very much now) but the severe tongue-lashing in the interim I got for not being "up front" (I didn't think she'd approve but sinned anyway!) gave me a headache for a week! I suspect that being of Scottish stock, Heather might share some of Lady McMoo's (of Northern Irish stock) qualities in this respect! But I might be wrong?

As 'Spaw intimates, looking forward to seeing a piccie of you and the Beardsell in due course!

Best regards,

mooman

Allan evidently doesn't answer his email too frequently. But I'm due to make a trip to the Guitar Shop on Connecticut Ave in DC, they'll have one if anybody does.

Dear people of Mudcat-- Thanks so much for your interest in my work. At present the guitars are only available from the Twelfth Fret and Song Bird music stores in Toronto, or directly from myself. You can e-mail me at al@beardsellguitars.com . Sorry if its hard to get through, Fortunato, but i haven't seen your posting yet so maybe the address you have is incorrect. Breezy, hopefully i will be in the UK soon but not as yet. For further viewing visit the Twelfth Fret site in "Whats New" at www.12fret.com or my site at www.beardsellguitars.com . I'd be glad to answer any questions, or whatever. Take care--Al
