I'll be working a couple of days in Helsinki in late March and will be free for a few days before returning to the US. I wonder if anyone can suggest publications, websites, or places to check for local traditional tunes and songs?

Thanks,

Rick ricklee@pobox.com http://ricklee.org

I'm not going to be much help, but your question is just irresistable, so here's my input. About 4 years ago my wife and I had the great pleasure of attending our Finnish (exchange student) daughter's graduation in Helsinki. While we were there for a week, I roamed all around the city, but found no "folk clubs" or street musicians or anything resembling my favorite "earthy" music. We did, however, go to dinner at a big restaurant with a large bar and a full stage for music...right in downtown, walking distance from the harbor where all the ships come and go. We were blown away by a Finnish group that did Rockabilly music better than any Americans working today! Can't remember the restaurant name, and the group was something typical like "Ronnie and the Rockets", but they were stunningly great....complete with vintage instruments from the '50s! If you (like I) can't find any Finnish folk music, you may be surprised to find some great American music played by Finns! And by the way, don't look for Finnish cuisine- unless you like 19 types of kippered fish and 13 cheeses- it's an oxymoron. Also, they stay up all night, 'cause there's no "night" at that time of year, so plan on being a night owl.

Dunno about live music in Finland but one of my favourite albums at the moment is 'On the Shoulders of the Great Bear'. It's by and Englishman, Andrew Cronshaw, but features some stunning Finnish folk music and musicians.

I couldn't find a web page for him but an album review I read says

This astonishing new performance comes to the UK from its debut in Kaustinen, a vilage at the heart of Finland's current burgeoning tradition-rooted music and dance evolution. The performers draw the audience into the world of the old, strong ways of Finno-Ugrian runo-song, kantele playing and the Siberian bear-feast. Music, dance and visual effects suround and surprise the promenade audience. Electric zither supremo and world music collaborator Andrew Cronshaw has attracted an outstading line-up of creative artists for this tour - supporting the recent release of the album - including lead-singer Jenny Wilhelms, vocalist Heikki Laitinen and the extraordinary performance artist Reijo Kela.

Perhaps Kaustinen, Finno-Ugrian runo-song, kantele playing or any of the mentioned names may be a good starting point. I would have a look but I have just spent about 4 hours tidying up and I'm knackered - so I'm off to bed!

Good luck and enjoy the visit. Keep us posted.

Cheers

Dave the Gnome

It is'nt Folk as we know it, but Finland strangely has a thriving Skiffle scene. Indeed, they hold a festival in July in Hankasalmi (which is a good way north of Helsinki) in July. You could e-mail the organiser Heidi Kauppinen at heidi.kauppinen@hankasalmi.fi and she might be able to help you out on Folky stuff and Folky venues. The finnish skiffle bands Dog in a Bucket, Kheveli Soikoon and The Werner Brothers all have websites which are searchable on Google.Com again by contacting them they might point you at some folk. Good Luck.
