All right Fielding, fess up. Where did you get the Dylan version of Robert Johnson's Kind Hearted Woman Blues that you played on your show tonight? A great cover of one of my favourite Johnson songs. What else is on the album? I couldn't find it on Bob's website.

I really enjoyed your guest tonight. Very strong singer and a nice guitar player, lots of feel.

Thanks Steve, She's Suzie Vinnick. She's great, and I enjoyed pickin' with her.

The CD is Bob live at the Gaslight in New York in 1961, and it's absolutely mindblowing. He's drunk and at times out of tune, but his pickin' singin' and choice of songs is wonderful. The best version of Barbry Ellen I've ever heard. Anyone who doesn't think he was the finest white blues singer/player of his day, needs to hear this album. Don't know the source of it though..it was given to me by Peter T.

Rick

Peter, can you help with this one? I've done a search for this CD but can't find it.

Rick, he sure was something else at that time. How much more buried treasure is out there? I had heard so much about the Bootleg Series but quite frankly I thought that if Bob chose not to release something it was probably because it was no good. CD 1 blew me away, stuff like House Carpenter, No More Auction Block, Moonshiner and Quit Your Low Down Ways are absolutely wonderful examples of what his audiences must have been treated to in those small clubs in the early sixties. Now to hear that version of Kind Hearted Woman. I have to get this CD.

I had a friend of mine over the other night, he is a blues fan, but is lukewarm to Dylan. I played him a few of my favourite blues guys that he hadn't heard before and then I snuck on In My Time Of Dyin' from the first Dylan album. His jaw almost hit the floor when he realized it was Dylan. I played a few other tracks and he's off to buy the album. Bob had such an edge in both his singing and playing in those days, he just snarled the Blues and beat the notes out of the guitar, much the same way that Son House did, acoustic punk. Yet he did things his own way, he wasnt' trying to sound like the originals.

'Spaw,

Thank you. I'll check with Dick. I tried searching the places that I usually get rare stuff from here in Canada and they came up blank.

BTW Steve.....You are on my "Shit List of the Day"

Somewhere between the title of the song and the mention of PT which made me think briefly of the Waylon Heron, I now have the Waylon Jennings song, "Good Hearted Woman" squirreling around in my head. These things generally last about 24 hours and I'll be plagued with this one til tomorrow. Thanks. Asshole.

'Spaw, I'm honoured.

Speaking of Ole Waylon, I read in yesterdays paper that he had his foot amputated as a result of an infection that is related to his diabetes. I hope he's okay, I always liked Waylon.

Perhaps if I gave you something else to think about it might get Good Hearted Woman out of your mind. How about this one? "Everybody was Kung Fu Fightin..."

That should take care of the Waylon problem. Now go away or I shall be forced to say "Ni".

Steve,

The reason you couldn't find "The Gaslight Tapes" from a legit source is that it is a bootleg. A retailer that wants to maintain a relationship with legitimate record companies does not sell bootlegs.

If you check out the rec.music.dylan group, you'll see a lot of buying and selling of such boots.

Rick,

I'm surprised that you're allowed to play bootlegs on your station. I had a radio show in college, back in the days of L.P.s and playing bootlegs was strictly forbidden then. No matter their musical worth.

Jerry

I have a three album (LP) set with the same title and cover on the box, as the above CD. This was not a boot as such, but was an Italian import. The copyright law in Italy was (?is) such that live recordings (?recorded outside of Italy) could be released legit. Many stores (HMV, Virgin, etc) sold these albums, complete with Italian licence stamp on label, during the 70's and 80's. I have half a dozen more Dylan albums from the same source, and one live Donovan release. There were plenty more by all kinds of artists.
love, john.

Not a chance Steve! A big chunk of what gets played on a lot of independant radio (the vast majority of it, very up to date Pop) is from concert and club recordings. My copy of Dylan's Gaslight stuff certainly LOOKS legit, but without a fair amount of research, it would have been hard to know for sure.

Many of the younger DJs have a totally 'anarchist approach' to the music, and they tape concerts they've seen that week to play on the air. They see it as a 'quid pro quo' in that they're promoting an artist's music. They'd certainly prefer that the "suits" not get a dime. Many (not all) artists happily go along with this, knowing that mainstream radio will NEVER play their music period.

In any battle between lawyers and independant artists, the artists will ALWAYS win, since they want exposure more than royalties (which they feel they wouldn't get anyway)

Since Jerry (who I strongly suspect has done a lot of radio SINCE the seventies, ha ha,) says it IS a bootleg, I probably wouldn't play the album AGAIN, simply 'cause I don't know what Dylan's stand on this is, but 'bootleg' ain't a dirty word to most of the DJs (half my age) that I've met over the last few years.

Dita,

A loophole in the Italian copyright law, now since closed because they had to adhere to the standards of the EU, does not mean that it isn't a bootleg. Any recording released, sold or traded without proper lisences (and compensation) is a bootleg.

Rick,

As I'm sure you're aware, Dylan & Sony have released three authorized collections of material widely circulated for years as bootlegs. I've read that antother set will be released this year. Maybe that stuff on your CD will be part of it.

Oh, Spaw...

"Ground control to Major Tom...commencing countdown, engines on..."

And if that don't do it, how about...

"Bill-ly...don't be a hee-ro...don't be a fool with your li-i-ife...."

Yeah.

Rick, I'm relieved. I'd hate to see the copywrite police storm the CIUT studio.

Jerry, do you know where you read that they are planning on releasing more official Bootlegs? If they are doing it soon I'll proabably wait and see what is on the official CD.

Jerry,

It was somewhere in the coverage surrounding "Love and Theft" this past fall. There were so many articles and reviews that I can't remember which one it was. I do recall it saying that the release was being planned for "next year."

Next year then is this year now.

Hi, Steve, I thought I mentioned this before, but there are two stores in Toronto that sell Dylan bootlegs, one on the corner of Bathurst and Dupont (can't remember the name), and "She Said Boom" which is about a block west of the Free Times Cafe College/Spadina in Toronto. I go in "She Said Boom" quite often, so if you want a copy, just PM me and I will get you one. They sort of reproduce them at need. They have lots of other ones -- the Gooden radio show from 61-62 is the one I am coveting at the moment.

yours, Peter T.

No Jerry...YOU'RE Jerry!

I heard last night that tapes from Montreal's wonderful Finjan coffee house may be released. That's where I first saw live folk music. Sonny and Brownie, Erik Darling, The Travellers....but NOT Dylan. Wonder what kind of quality they are.

I have two of those "GO International" albums on vinyl, from Italy, recorded at the Gaslight, NYC, Sept 61 and at the Finyan Club, Montreal, July 2nd '62,Man on the street, He was a friend of mine, Talking mountain bear..., Song to Woody, Car car, Pretty Polly, Two trains runnin, Ramblin on my mind: Rocks and gravel, Quit your low down ways, He was a friend of mine[again!], Let me die in my footsteps, Death of Emmett Till, Stealin, Hiram Hubbard, Blowin in the wind. Great singing. I never attempted to collect any of the bootlegs but these sorta fell into my lap. Are they in any way rare?

Saw Bob on November 3 2001 in Nashville, good performance but disappointed that he never addressed one word to the audience and with the heavy rock noise levels on songs like Blowin in the wind, which for me is essentially an acoustic song. Great though, for a Brit/Irishman to have seen him live in US for the first time and in the home of N Skyline at that! Cheers guys.

Hate to break up the royalties/ bootleg/ Dylan "WAS" discussion but a relatively recent Dylan CD "Time Out of Mind" is still pretty bluesy and contrary to those who think ol' Bob can't sing any more, is well performed. Just this Bob-ert's opinion...

Bobert,

I agree that Dylan "is", I'm a big fan of both Time Out Of Mind and his newest, Love & Theft.

But for some reason he has played second fiddle to other guitarists since "Bringing It All Back Home". He's had many good ones, including the guys in his current band. But I'd sure love to see just Bob and his guitar on stage. He was a wonderful Blues & Folk player.

I like Bob any old way at all...but when it's just him and his guitar, and he's up for it, that is the ultimate Bob. He was an incredible player and performer in the early sixties, and I think it was because he was so young and so hungry (as young men usually are). Later he got pretty jaded with the whole thing. Fame is a killer.
