Subject: Yorkshire source singers From: GUEST,Fay Hield Date: 05 Jan 02 - 11:31 AM I am trying to find some Yorkshire songs, being from there 'an all, and realised that I haven't come accross any old singers yet. Who is there, or was there, singing songs from Yorkshire, and where are they all now? I've found a few songs, and am still looking, but to listen to a real person would be good. - pre revival prefered! Thanks...fayxx |
Subject: RE: Yorkshire source singers From: Matthew Edwards Date: 05 Jan 02 - 11:52 AM Fay Hield (is that a Spoonerism?). There is Will Noble in South West Yorkshire who is still singing today; Veteran released a cassette "In That Beautiful Dale" VT124 of his songs, and may reissue it on CD one day. There was also Frank Hinchcliffe of Sheffield (1923-1995), whose song The Pear Tree can be heard on the EFDSS CD "A Century of Song". There are also recordings of South Yorkshire Carols - but you will have to wait until next December to hear any live performances. The Fishermen's Choirs are still active in Staithes, and also in Filey and Marske. I expect Malcolm Douglas will be able to provide more comprehensive information - this is after all his home patch! |
Subject: RE: Yorkshire source singers From: Malcolm Douglas Date: 05 Jan 02 - 12:41 PM Frank Hinchliffe of Crosspool in Sheffield (1923-1995) made a record for Topic, In Sheffield Park: Traditional Songs from South Yorkshire (12TS308, 1977); his son Roger also sings. Frank and his friends were the subject of an article by Dr. Ian Russell, Stability and Change in a Sheffield Singing Tradition, in the Folk Music Journal for 1987.
Will Noble (Marsden near Huddersfield) featured on a Leader LP, A Fine Hunting Day: Songs of the Holme Valley Beagles (LEE4056, 1975), unfortunately deleted and now hidden in Dave Bulmer's vaults like so much more important material. Will is still alive and well, and has made other recordings.
Arthur Howard of Hazlehead, Penistone, South Yorkshire (1902-1982) also featured on the Holm Valley recording, and made one of his own, Merry Mountain Child (Hill and Dale Records HD006, 1981); this too is deleted, but you can still find copies in record libraries and the like.
There are plenty more, but these come first to mind. All three have tracks on A Century of Song (EFDSS CD02, 1998), and they and others are included in various volumes of Topic's epic Voice of the People series.
Time being what it is, many are now dead and can only be heard on recordings which themselves are sometimes hard to find. Other singers from Yorkshire can be heard on a number of archive recordings made by Peter Kennedy and others, available from Folktrax.
The carol singing tradition continues, of course, but that's a communal experience which won't give you much of an idea of regional traditional styles. Recordings are available from Ian Russell's Village Carols. There's a large body of printed material, so no shortage of songs traditionally associated with Yorkshire -at which point I should mention Paul Davenport's South Riding Song Book, which is still available from the South Riding Folk Network. There's plenty more if you look, but of course printed sources give little idea of style or presentation. |
Subject: RE: Yorkshire source singers From: Lynn W Date: 05 Jan 02 - 04:50 PM Hi Fay I have the Fine Hunting Day LP if you're interested in hearing it. If you're interested in printed sources,(as pre-revival singers may be thin on the ground!) Frank Kidson's Traditional Tunes (1891) has quite a lot of songs collected in Yorkshire. I can lend you a copy if you can't find one. Lynn Wood (Haworth) |
Subject: RE: Yorkshire source singers From: Willa Date: 05 Jan 02 - 05:29 PM Hi, Fay; I hope ypu'll be at Whitby again this year. I'm sure you've heard (met?) the Watersons. Their 'Early Days' CD(Topic TSCD472)is from a 1960's recording and includes 'Three Score and Ten',(lyrics by a Whitby man), 'The Jolly Waggoners', 'I am a Rover', 'The Holmfirth Anthem', 'The Poacher's Fate', 'Willy Went to Westerdale', 'I'Anson's Racehorse','Ye noble Spectators' and 'The Whitby Lad'. Sources are acknowledged in the sleeve notes. |
Subject: RE: Yorkshire source singers From: Willa Date: 05 Jan 02 - 05:57 PM Forgot to say that I also have a copy of Kidson's Traditional Tunes - it was bought for me recently, so you should be able to geet hold of a copy. ISBN Number is 1 86143 081 7. It gives tunes/lyrics and source refences, and includes 'I am a Rover, mentioned above, 'The Drowned sailor' and 'The White Cockade' |
Subject: RE: Yorkshire source singers From: nutty Date: 05 Jan 02 - 08:04 PM Don't forget Graham Metcalfe ...... his "Songs from Yorkshire and other civilisations" is an absolute gem. |

Subject: RE: Yorkshire source singers From: Tyke Date: 05 Jan 02 - 08:30 PM Hello Faye, The best person I could tell you about to put you on the right track. You have already met in Whitby! His name is Mick Haywood (ask Gordon Tyrall!). Or if you want a source singer extrodaner why not look up the teliphone number of Geff Wood (He runs the Grove Folk Club in Leeds see well you guest TYKES NEWS!) Geff Wood Collected Lish Young Byer Broom! ("She was right I was tight every body had her way. She was a lish young buyer broom that sent her on her way"). Funny world in it going to Newcastle to colect Coals from Yorkshire! Oh you missed a great night at the Back a Pipes on Friday. Happy New Year Faye from George Clarke |
Subject: RE: Yorkshire source singers From: Arbuthnot Date: 05 Jan 02 - 09:10 PM There is a squeezebox player in Buckden called Jackie Connolly who has a large repertoire of songs - he's worth finding. I will undertake to put you in touch with Graham Metcalfe if you like. I'd stay away from that George Clarke if I were you - I think he's a bit leary (what they'd call a chiker in Nottamun). |
Subject: RE: Yorkshire source singers From: Nerd Date: 06 Jan 02 - 02:21 PM Frank Hinchliffe also had a few tracks on the first of the EFDSS's "Root & Branch" thingies. It's a Magazine/CD/Trading Card collection that comes out quarterly (I think). Most of the above-mentioned singers can also be heard on The Voice of the People copllection. Also, I have a different Cassette by the Holme Valley Beagles, called simply Hunting Songs. Not sure if it's available anymore... Good Luck! |
Subject: RE: Yorkshire source singers From: GUEST,Fay Date: 07 Jan 02 - 06:22 AM Thanks very much everyone for your references. I will endevour to look into them. Kind offers of lending books and personal contacts are great, but I think I'll try to get started with what you've given me here first. If I want to go further down any road....I'll be in touch! If anyone hears of performances of any of the above mentioned, or knows where they hang out, feel free to email me and I'll try to get to see them. (the living ones - obviously!) fayhield@hotmail.com Nice to see so many familiar faces in here, even if you do have strange names - Arbuthnot - whats that all about then? |
Subject: RE: Yorkshire source singers From: Geoff the Duck Date: 07 Jan 02 - 07:14 AM Another person who has collected a lot of material is Jim Eldon who was based in Bridlington. He used to do a programme on local radio and spent time recording songs in the East Riding of Yorkshire and Humberside. Here are a couple of blue clicky links to sites mentioning him Link one, Jims, Link two. Jims wife, Lynette also dances with Green Ginger Clog. Quack! |
