Subject: RE: Noreen has a new house! From: Ralphie Date: 04 Jan 02 - 10:49 AM Fortunato You've obviously never been to Bury, or you wouldn't ask! Only Joking Good luck with the new place Noreen Ralphie |
Subject: RE: Noreen has a new house! From: SINSULL Date: 04 Jan 02 - 11:24 AM Typical - all congratulations and no requests for details! Men! OK. How many bedrooms? Baths? Floors? Old or new kitchen? Finished basement (music room potential)? Color schemes? Hardwood floors or carpeting? All the details, Noreen. And when do you move in? Congratulations! SINS |
Subject: RE: Noreen has a new house! From: alanww Date: 04 Jan 02 - 11:37 AM I hope your move has gone really smoooooothly, Noreen! I know you will make your new home a happy one. Can't help with the photo, Fortunato, but here's an aerial view, which looks OK to me. (Hope you don't mind, Noreen!) Yes, when is the housewarming party? The comfort of singing voices will see us through ... |
Subject: RE: Noreen has a new house! From: Morticia Date: 04 Jan 02 - 11:40 AM I think it's actually today that she moves in, so she may not be in touch for a while ( let's see how long it takes her to set up her computer.....anyone want to make a bet?) best wishes, and yes, when is the party? |
Subject: RE: Noreen has a new house! From: Ned Ludd Date: 04 Jan 02 - 11:41 AM Hope the move goes or has gone well Noreen- didn't realise you lived in Bury. Not too far from us... wrong side of the hill though. (joking.) |
Subject: RE: Noreen has a new house! From: alanww Date: 04 Jan 02 - 11:48 AM Morticia, my bet is at 3pm according to the Mudcat clock! My grandfather's clock was too large for the shelf ... |
Subject: RE: Noreen has a new house! From: John J Date: 04 Jan 02 - 12:01 PM Her computer is certainly sorted; she confirmed the move by email! I look forward to further details of the house, and more importantly, details of the housewarming sing! John |
Subject: RE: Noreen has a new house! From: GUEST,JTT Date: 04 Jan 02 - 12:07 PM Oh, don't Bury yourself in the countryside! Seriously, good wishes for house and home. |
Subject: RE: Noreen has a new house! From: Fortunato Date: 04 Jan 02 - 12:48 PM Thanks, AlanW, I think I can just seen Noreen at the window, ooooooooooooh. Sorry. Sinsull I asked for pictures, that's rather like details. I assume Bury is short for something? Usually place names are ------bury, SOMETHINGbury, not just Bury. How did it ever get such a name? Regards, Fortunato |
Subject: RE: Noreen has a new house! From: Naemanson Date: 04 Jan 02 - 03:27 PM I have seen pictures of Bury. Noreen was my secret Santa and she included postcards from Bury in my package. And Bury is the whole name. Good luck, Noreen. Wish I could be there to help. Brett |
Subject: RE: Noreen has a new house! From: gnu Date: 04 Jan 02 - 03:48 PM My sympathies. The only advice I can offer at a time like this is take it slow and easy and remember, it takes a few days to move, it takes a few months to make a house a home. Me, I am in my fourth month... I expect to have everthing straight by spring. Lazy or realistic ? Perhaps a bit of both. |
Subject: RE: Noreen has a new house! From: 8_Pints Date: 04 Jan 02 - 03:56 PM Good luck in your new home Noreen. In the words of the Irish blessing, May the stones stand firm to shelter you May your fire burn warm within your hearth May your friends bring comfort to your home May your music ring within it's walls Until we meet again...... Subject: RE: Noreen has a new house! From: Noreen Date: 04 Jan 02 - 06:22 PM I'm here!!!! A little later than predicted, Alan- just a few minor things to do first, such as shovelling snow so I could get the car up to my cottage to move out.. and taking apart and rebuilding my computer table when I thought I'd be able to move it in one piece... luckily I had help or I'd still be in bits, in more ways than one. I've got a kettle, tea bags, milk, water and electricity supply, and a chippy directly across the road- what else could i wish for? *grin* Sleep, at the moment... but I'd love to have a housewarming singing party. Best wait 'til the snow goes, and we have something to sit on (those happenings are not connected, as far as I know.) If this is drivel please excuse me as i am cream crackered. Thank you all for your good wishes, I am very touched. Will report back with more details when I am able. Noreen |
Subject: RE: Noreen has a new house! From: Sorcha Date: 04 Jan 02 - 06:27 PM Is all of UK Mudcat moving house? Noreen, Peg, seems like John in Hull just moved.......what is going on over there???? |

Subject: RE: Noreen has a new house! From: Susanne (skw) Date: 04 Jan 02 - 06:44 PM Congratulations, Noreen! May good luck follow you from the old place to the new! (And I trust that once you've made yourself - and your computer - comfortable we'll get informed of the new address. Preferably before mid-April because I'm getting three weeks in Britain after then! Yippee!) |
Subject: RE: Noreen has a new house! From: Bill D Date: 04 Jan 02 - 07:09 PM I see many patches of green in the map, Noreen...that's always a good sign.... warmest congratulations on your move, and do give us a few images when your 'crackered' self and the weather permit. (crackered is not an American term, my dear, but it translates perfectly in the context...*smile*) may happiness follow you in the door.... |

Subject: RE: Noreen has a new house! From: lady penelope Date: 05 Jan 02 - 09:08 AM Cream crackered = Knackered ( to be extremely tired or worn out - applies to inanimate objects as well ) I'm confused Noreen. You've moved from Bury to Bury, in Lancashire. Are you sure you've moved? Even if you discover you haven't, can we still have a house warming party ? Bury is quite a common name all over england, I could be completely wrong about this, but I think it comes from buriel mounds - a bury - of which there are loads, every where. TTFN M'Lady P. Subject: RE: Noreen has a new house! From: artbrooks Date: 07 Jan 02 - 12:00 PM Congratulations!!. We moved four months ago, and I'm still unpacking and hanging things up. Hope you do better...it's much more comfortable when there are familiar things to look at. You said "a chippy directly across the road"? In the States, a chippy is out-of-date slang for a girl who is overly free with her favors. What does it mean on the other side of the pond? |
Subject: RE: Noreen has a new house! From: alanww Date: 07 Jan 02 - 12:17 PM A chippy is a fish and chip (french fries) shop (sometimes with donna kebabs or chinese food etc), most usually as a takeaway. Sons of the sea ... |
Subject: RE: Noreen has a new house! From: catspaw49 Date: 07 Jan 02 - 12:21 PM Sorry the chips are off.....and so seems to be my first post!?!?!?!? I dunno' where it went, but I posted several days ago....Musta' whupped up and hit clear or something..........ANYWAY....CONGRATS NOREEN!!! Got your new addy and all by e-mail....Good on ya'!! Spaw |
Subject: RE: Noreen has a new house! From: Stilly River Sage Date: 07 Jan 02 - 01:23 PM This is interesting reading--and I have one question, a clarification of a clarification. The "chippy" I figured out, but what is skewered in a "donna kebab?" You're not talking a Sweeny Todd kind of establishment, are you? :) I'll be moving in the next month or so (doesn't mean much here, since I'm new to the list and most of you don't know me) but I have a small ritual when I move to a new place. As Noreen remarked, having the kettle and tea at the ready is vital, and a comfortable table and chair to use while drinking my tea. The first thing I do in a new place (even as stuff is being moved in) is to bake a loaf of bread and make a big pot of soup. These are the most visceral of smells I can think of, and immedately make the place feel like home. (It also helps calm people who are coming and going -- those I hope to talk into helping me move big clunky antique furniture, including my half-ton upright grand piano that has been in the family since 1884). Maggie |
Subject: RE: Noreen has a new house! From: John J Date: 07 Jan 02 - 02:04 PM Donna Kebab?.....Lovely girl! :-) |
Subject: RE: Noreen has a new house! From: Herga Kitty Date: 07 Jan 02 - 02:44 PM Doner kebabs aren't nearly as interesting. English chippies have been adapting to immigrant cuisines for many years.... when I was a student, chips with curry sauce were very popular. If I remember rightly, the Chinese takeaway at Bromyard is (was?) called the Shun Fat, which always seemed an amazing contradiction for a Chinese takeaway... Kitty |

Subject: RE: Noreen has a new house! From: Snuffy Date: 07 Jan 02 - 07:35 PM A chippy is also a carpenter - might be handy to have one of them across the road, too! WassaiL! V |
Subject: RE: Noreen has a new house! From: Noreen Date: 07 Jan 02 - 08:01 PM Indeed it would, Snuffy... I just leaned on a cupboard door in the kitchen and it came off it's hinges :0( (I didn't lean that hard!) It's a real English chippy across the road, no Doner Kebabs/E. Coli breeding grounds in sight! (A Doner kebab is a large cylyndrical conglomeration of unidenified spiced meat, about 2 feet long and 5" in diameter, skewered and kept warm indefinitely, slices being taken and inserted between bread with limp salad to young men rolling out of pubs at closing time....) I'm pleased with myself having got the cooker to work, but I still can't find anything! Thanks all for your support, I'm not finding it easy today. Noreen |
Subject: RE: Noreen has a new house! From: Trevor Date: 08 Jan 02 - 08:44 AM Hello Noreen. Happy New Year, Happy New House! I've moved four times in the last seven years (and they still haven't caught me)and I hate, hate, hate it. But being in and half-settled is great isn't it. You know, when you get in to bed and realise that you're there and you've done it and you can shut your eyes with that little smirk on your face..... |
Subject: RE: Noreen has a new house! From: Les from Hull Date: 08 Jan 02 - 12:43 PM Congrats from Maggie and me. Your new house will go well with your new car. You must live near our kid (Radcliffe) |
