Subject: Attention ICQers & Other IMers From: Clinton Hammond Date: 03 Jan 02 - 07:19 PM Do you run ICQ and AIM, and maybe 2 or 3 other Instant messagers, just because you know too many people on too many different systems? check this out It'll replace Yahoo, IRC, MSN, AIM, And ICQ on your system into one easy to use interface...
;-) |
Subject: RE: Attention ICQers & Other IMers From: katlaughing Date: 03 Jan 02 - 07:39 PM Hey, that looks interesting, Clinton. I refused to get into all of them, so only have ICQ AND I keep it on invisible mode, most of the time, so that I don't get a lot of interruptions when working at home, but I can see that this would be a great way to bring them all together. Thanks! BTW, you mentioned an email that was better than hotmail and I cannot remember where you mentioned it. Would you mind posting a link/or URL once more? Thanks! kat |
Subject: RE: Attention ICQers & Other IMers From: Clinton Hammond Date: 03 Jan 02 - 09:32 PM I mentioned Visto... but unfortunately, about 3 weeks after that thread, Visto canned it's free email service... the bastards! I'm currently experimenting with Yahoo, ICQmail, and one other who's name escapes me for the moment... I'll do ANYTHING to keep from having to ever go back to HotSPAM! |
Subject: RE: Attention ICQers & Other IMers From: hesperis Date: 04 Jan 02 - 03:26 AM yahoo is fine as long as you don't list yourself in the member directory, and don't sign up for anything from them. |
Subject: RE: Attention ICQers & Other IMers From: Clinton Hammond Date: 04 Jan 02 - 03:34 AM Trillian is gonna replace 'em all eventually... ;-) |
Subject: RE: Attention ICQers & Other IMers From: Mark Cohen Date: 04 Jan 02 - 04:05 AM I've never had a problem with spam on hotmail...though I have had one or two spam messages recently, so I guess I'd better knock on wood, or else it means the jig is up and I should expect an onslaught. I don't use hotmail as my primary email anyway. Aloha, Mark |
Subject: RE: Attention ICQers & Other IMers From: artbrooks Date: 04 Jan 02 - 08:32 AM I use Yahoo because my daughters like it. I haven't had any spam problems since I quit Bigfoot. |
Subject: RE: Attention ICQers & Other IMers From: kendall Date: 04 Jan 02 - 09:21 AM I get a lot of porno on icq. I have no desire to watch teen age drug addicts "do it with animals" |
Subject: RE: Attention ICQers & Other IMers From: Clinton Hammond Date: 04 Jan 02 - 12:00 PM You people are missing the point.... |
Subject: RE: Attention ICQers & Other IMers From: Clinton Hammond Date: 04 Jan 02 - 05:33 PM O.k... I KNOW there are other tech geeks here besides me and katlaughing!!! LOL!!!!! ;-) |
Subject: RE: Attention ICQers & Other IMers From: artbrooks Date: 04 Jan 02 - 05:50 PM Clinton, the issue isn't techogeekishness. Nobody I care to talk to on line uses anything except Yahoo, so why clutter up my PC? I looked at it, the interface is ugly, and I have no use for it. |
Subject: RE: Attention ICQers & Other IMers From: Clinton Hammond Date: 04 Jan 02 - 05:54 PM Yer assessment of an ugly interface is suspect, if all you did was look a the screen shots, mate... Besides, the refresh wasn't aimed at you who have already posted... I know there are people here who WOULD like it! It's a thing called "good taste" LOL!!! ;-) |
Subject: RE: Attention ICQers & Other IMers From: SeanM Date: 04 Jan 02 - 06:34 PM My problem with the 'new' IMs is the one that's endemic to any new service of this nature. My friends are all on YIM, AIM or ICQ - and I don't particularly feel like being a cheerleader for a FOURTH service now. Hotmail tried for a while to do an "all in one" messenger that would be able to recieve both HIM and AIM messages. AOL successfully legally blocked them. I would imagine that any attempt to create a third party program that would allow you to operate and recieve messages from several other services would probably run into the same difficulty eventually. Good luck with it though - if you like it, and can get enough people on it to enable you to remove the other IMs, more power to you. M |
Subject: RE: Attention ICQers & Other IMers From: hesperis Date: 05 Jan 02 - 05:57 PM Trillian does accept messages from the other services, and Trillian is free, not some big company's offering. So they have less of a legal problem. That said, I tried it in a previous build, and really didn't like it. However, I've heard some good things about the latest version, which is apparently completely different, and figure it's worth trying again. If you have friends who prefer different IMs, then it's worth a try, because IF you like it, you can uninstall the three-four others that you are currently using. Right now my fave is ICQ, but I also have friends on yahoo, aim, and msn. |
Subject: RE: Attention ICQers & Other IMers From: SeanM Date: 05 Jan 02 - 06:34 PM Hotmail's IM program that spawned the legal challenge was free as well. The case hinged on the fact that Hotmail was attempting to provide service to AIM users without AIM users actually using the AIM product. Trillian may not get hit. It may not be based where the big guns can hit it from the legal departments. It may even (though not likely) have gained permission to use everyone else's services to rout into theirs. However, I do stand by the fact that the precedent set when Hotmail tried to cross platform send/recieve could VERY well prove Trillian's undoing. M |
Subject: RE: Attention ICQers & Other IMers From: Clinton Hammond Date: 05 Jan 02 - 06:45 PM Not even close, according to the people at Trillian... I don't really understand how they did it, but they are insulated from this kind of bullsh!t!! ;-) |
Subject: RE: Attention ICQers & Other IMers From: kendall Date: 05 Jan 02 - 08:00 PM I tried to download it and got "You are not authorized to access this site." |
Subject: RE: Attention ICQers & Other IMers From: Bill D Date: 05 Jan 02 - 09:11 PM Sure...I've been using Trillian for 4-5 months now...it is a little 'different' to get used to, but 92.416% of its features are superior to ICQ...and....you can have 3-4 identities at once with Trillian, in case you want to be Betty Broccoli in your vegetable fetish group. You can even have Trillian & ICQ open at the same time, with different privacy settings in each...not for everyone, but it is a good product. (The gang in the alt.comp.freeware newsgroup seems to be about 10-1 in favor of it.) |
Subject: RE: Attention ICQers & Other IMers From: alison Date: 05 Jan 02 - 10:06 PM Kendall... what are you doing in ICQ to get all the porn??? are you going into the chat room groups? I spend most of my time invisible... so I can talk to the people I want to talk to without the "I've got 12 inches and can go all night" brigade...... slainte alison |
Subject: RE: Attention ICQers & Other IMers From: Devilmaster Date: 06 Jan 02 - 05:42 AM ummm, Bill D, maybe we should sit down and have a talk buddy....... Sounds like someone has issues! :) |
