I have it on a June Tabor album (Angel Tiger) at home; it's not a Richard Thompson song, but I can't remember the author's name at the moment. If no-one else gets to it before then, I'll type it in tomorrow...

"All Our Trades Are Gone" (sic) is sung by June Tabor on "Angel Tiger," 1992, and on the 3-CD collection "Femme Fatale: History of Women in Popular Music," Alpha Wave #13, 1999. Authorship is credited to Mick Fitzgerald.

It was also recorded by the duo Tory Voodoo (Arvid Smith and Lee Hunter) on "Roll Down Thy Window," 1997, and on the fRoots #6 compilation CD.

30-second sound samples are available at CDNOW.

I was unable to find the lyrics on the Internet.

It is also found on the excellent CD by Danny Carnahan & Robin Petrie - No Regrets. A great version too!

I found this excerpt. Can anybody transcribe the song? I can't understand the June Tabor recording very well.

"Your working day is passing slowly
and you're thinking on the evening time
and we're running wild through your city
all your working days have passed us by."

- Mick Fitzgerald, "All Our Trades are Gone"

I'll be seeing Mick next week and will ask him (if he's not on tour with his acting group). Don

Copied from Mick Fitzerald's MySpace page, and tweaked a bit to agree with what June Tabor sings:

ALL OUR TRADES ARE GONE
(Written by Mick Fitzgerald)

1. We will sit here in the morning
Of the summer and the month of May.
The year is old and it is raining.
Will you think before you turn away?

CHORUS: For you left us sitting here
While the years were passing.
Now all our trades have gone.
We are moved on, always moved on.

2. Your working day is passing slowly
And you're thinking of the evening time.
We are running wild through your city.
All your working days have passed us by.

3. Oh the night is passing slowly
And the weary city slips away.
We are sitting here in the shadows.
You've forgotten for another day.

4. Oh, the city in the morning!
Oh, the summer and the month of May!
The year is old and it is raining.
Will you think before you turn away?
