Subject: Neal&Leandra 'Take Me Down to the Water' From: Mark Cohen Date: 02 Jan 02 - 01:37 AM I heard a bit of this song, "Take Me Down to the Water", on FolkScene tonight, and it was very powerful. It sounded like it was about a woman whose child died--at her hands--of what's been called "shaken baby syndrome". I don't know anything about Neal & Leandra. I followed the link to their site from the FolkScene page, but it doesn't have the words to this song. And FolkScene is a "live" streaming site (archived shows, but played in real time online), so I can't go back and listen to it again. A song of mine has a somewhat similar theme, and I'd love to find these words. Any enlightenment would be appreciated. (Well, about this song, at least!) Aloha, Mark |
Subject: ADD: Take Me Down to the Water From: Joe Offer Date: 02 Jan 02 - 02:12 AM Aloha, Mark. You shoulda come to Camp Harmony this year. It was terrific. Say, this is quite a powerful song. -Joe Offer- TAKE ME DOWN TO THE WATER (Neal Hagberg) When I was twelve I was baptized They pinched my nose, I scrunched my eyes Preacher Willis laid me back When I came up the air I gasped Didn't feel any different chorus: Take me down to the water Lead me into the water Lay me down in the water Let me drown in the water And I will be set free When I was fifteen I had a child People said that I was wild But I know who the daddy was I kept my mouth shut because It wouldn't make any difference chorus When I was seventeen my baby died I shook her hard one night when she cried It should have been me or her preacher dad When she closed her eyes and breathed her last Everything was different chorus When I was seventeen my baby died I shook her hard one night when she cried It should have been me or her preacher dad When she closed her eyes and breathed her last Everything was different chorus On the Neal & Leandra CD, Stranger to my Kin |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Neal&Leandra 'Take Me Down to the Wa From: Joe Offer Date: 02 Jan 02 - 03:46 AM I just took the time to listen closely to "Take Me Down to the Water." It's so powerful it really shook me. Mark wrote a powerful song on this theme himself, These Hands. -Joe Offer- |
