Subject: Help! Lost chord: All of Me From: Mudlark Date: 28 Dec 01 - 06:08 PM I am trying to put together a bunch of oldies for the convalescent home people...difficult with my limited "folk" chord repetoire...but I can make it all the way thru "All of Me" with the chords on the Web except for...."...without you" in the part that goes "I'm no good without you/can't go on without you." I've tried it in F (the key it was written in), C and G...everything works except that one place. The sheet I got gives a Gm there, which doesn't work in F, or transposed in any other key, at least not the way I remember the melody...and I don't think I'm wrong... Any help would be appreciated. Thanks. |
Subject: RE: Help! Lost chord: All of Me From: Justa Picker Date: 28 Dec 01 - 06:31 PM Key of C - Basic chord changes (Cmaj7) All of me, Why not take (E7) all of me, (A7) Can't you see, I'm no good, Without (Dm) you, (E7) Take my lips, I want to (Am) lose them, (D7)Take my arms, I'll never (Dm) use (G7) them (Cmaj7) Your goodbye, Left me with (E7) eyes that cry, (A7) How can I, go on dear without (Dm) you (F) You took the (F minor or F#dim) part, that (Cmaj7) once (Em7) was my (A7) heart So (Dm7) why not take (G7) all of (C). |
Subject: RE: Help! Lost chord: All of Me From: Mudlark Date: 28 Dec 01 - 07:48 PM Thanks, Justa, for the chords and quick response. Your version works a treat (don't know why I couldn't "find" that Dm...that IS a chord I know!) and the rest of the chords, somewhat different than what I was working with, sound better too....so great to find these chords to songs I've been singing for years... |
Subject: RE: Help! Lost chord: All of Me From: Justa Picker Date: 28 Dec 01 - 07:53 PM Glad to be of assistance Mudlark. (Sometimes it's the easiest of the most obvious chord(s) that don't sound right, or, we can't find them. I've been there myself many times.) I tried to keep the chords pretty basic, although this tune really lends itself to jazzed up passing/transition chords as well. You can also subsitute a Bb9 for the Em7 (on "that once was my heart") and create sort of a walk-down from the C to A7. Anyways, glad it worked out for you. |
Subject: RE: Help! Lost chord: All of Me From: Genie Date: 28 Dec 01 - 09:46 PM JP, Your chords look as though they would jazz it up a bit, and I'm sure they're closer to the original sheet music than mine, but I've been doing it for years with only G, B7, E, E7, Am, Em, A7, D, D7, and Bm, (and maybe an Em7 and Am7) and to my ear it sounds great! I'll have to try it with a major 7 and diminished chord or two and see how it sounds. Maybe I'll like that even better. Genie |
Subject: RE: Help! Lost chord: All of Me From: Mudlark Date: 28 Dec 01 - 10:17 PM Thanks, Justa...getting from C to E7 and from E7 to A7 is fun too.... |
Subject: RE: Help! Lost chord: All of Me From: Sorcha Date: 28 Dec 01 - 11:13 PM Is it not true that sometimes when you have heard the wrong chord too many times trying to find the right one that the right one still sounds wrong? (Does that make sense??) It's sort of "getting a bad sound in your ear" and nothing sounds right after a lot of wrong ones. |
Subject: RE: Help! Lost chord: All of Me From: Justa Picker Date: 29 Dec 01 - 02:05 AM Genie, If changing a chord from a C to a Cmaj7 is jazzing it up, then it's mild jazzing. **G** If I really wanted to jazz it up I'd play it with these changes: (Cmaj7) All of me, Why not take (E7) all of me (E7#5), (A7) Can't you see, I'm no good (A7#5), Without (Dm7b5) you (Dm7), (E7/Bb) Take my (E7/G#) lips, I want to (Am7b5) lose them (Am7), (D7)Take my arms (D7b5), I'll never (Dm7) use (G7#5b9) them (Cmaj7) Your goodbye, Left me with (E7) eyes that cry (Bb9), (A7) How can I, go on dear without (Dm7) you (F maj7) You took the (F#dim) part, that (Em7b5) once (Bb9) was my (A7b5) heart So (Dm7b5) why not take (C#maj7) all of me(C). |

Subject: RE: Help! Lost chord: All of Me From: Genie Date: 29 Dec 01 - 03:30 AM Sounds good! BTW, JP, I was thinking more of the diminished chord than the major 7th as "jazzing it up." You're using a diminished where I use a minor 7th. FWIW, here is what I have been playing: (G) All of me, (G) Your goodbye *I do a thingy with the B7, where my index finger alternates between the E and the A string from beat to beat, so I don't change chords (other than that). The red chords are where I would substitute ones that you've suggested. (It sounds better to me that way.) I don't use Gmaj 7 because it's a gawdawful contorted hand position for me. (If I want to use the major 7th, I'll play it in C.) But personally, I think the song sounds better with the major chord on the first line, rather than the major 7th. Just my taste--I play an upbeat version of the song, anyway (first time moderate tempo, second time through much faster). I offer my version only as one option. Play whatever sounds good to you, Mudlark! BTW, Sorcha, Genie |
Subject: RE: Help! Lost chord: All of Me From: Justa Picker Date: 29 Dec 01 - 01:23 PM Genie, Your chords work great. I will almost always use a diminished chord in place of a minor, if to my ears it improves or enhances the sound of the melody line. Minor chords are sometimes a little too "plain vanilla" sounding for my ears. The jazzy chords I put above, probably sound better on the piano - and I was working from the piano as a reference point at the time. They'd have to be voiced in just the right way on the guitar to work and more likely sound better with a bass player accompanying. I wouldn't necessarily play the song with those chords everytime, but rather would alternate them through each pass of the song and over any solos being played in say a group/ensemble situation. |
Subject: RE: Help! Lost chord: All of Me From: M.Ted Date: 30 Dec 01 - 01:56 AM Genie's chords work well in a Doc Watson/Merle sort of way, and JP's are nice if a sax player drops by-- |
Subject: RE: Help! Lost chord: All of Me From: Mudlark Date: 30 Dec 01 - 04:18 AM Dear Genie... Thanks so much for your rendition... I really like your B7 thingy and that chord "walks" well, too, from G and to E. Having stuggled w/a Bm for more years than I care to admit, I can't quite fit it in, unless I slow the song to granny gear, but it sure sounds good. Trying to come up with some 30's-40's tunes for these folks has been a real learning experience, and it is surprising how well a lot of these mellow oldies pop songs go with "folk" material. |
Subject: RE: Help! Lost chord: All of Me From: M.Ted Date: 31 Dec 01 - 12:45 AM You can play these songs in many different ways, with anything from fingerstyle jazz chord melody to baby open chords, the key is simply to get the rhythm right-- Mudlark, if you have been struggling for years to get that Bm, and still can't play it up to speed, you need to sit down with someone who can teach, and get it right for once and for all--it isn't that hard, and you will be able to do a lot more once you've mastered it-- |
Subject: RE: Help! Lost chord: All of Me From: Mudlark Date: 31 Dec 01 - 02:48 AM Thanks for the suggestion, M. Ted...I gave up trying to barre it years ago, but still can't seem to make my fingers work for it so I must be doing something wrong...it's an invaluable chord in the range of stuff I play and i flub it just about every time... |
Subject: RE: Help! Lost chord: All of Me From: M.Ted Date: 31 Dec 01 - 03:51 PM So find someone to teach you how to do it--make it a New Years Resolution! |
