I've been playing slide for awhile now, but mainly in DADF#AD for blues. Lately I've been getting into Allison Krauss's new disc New Favorite, and I'm noticing some beautiful slide on the album. Similar to stuff I've heard on Lyle Lovett's "Step Inside This House". Guess I'm just a neophyte to bluegrass, but I wanna learn. anyone know more about this kind of tuning for slide? Any sites I can visit for more info on the style, etc.? Or, for that matter, any discussion of slide and slide playing. Like I said I play mostly in DADF#AD, but I also just go standard tuning as well, usually for the Allman Bros. stuff. SB

Try open G: (DGDGBD) great for country blues and easy to pick up as the 2nd, 3d, and 4th strings stay the same as standard tuning. Useful for Airs and O'Carolan stuff if you play as much of the the melody as you can by moving up and down the 'B'string, using the others as drones.

Thanks for the welcome david. Ive been watching the site for a bit now, and I've found it very helpful. You know, the G tuning does sound somewhat familiar. Seems someone somewhere suggested it one night, but you know how it is; didn't write er down. Thanks Ian, I'll give er a whirl.SB

Spanish or G tuing is great for Robert Johnson's music.. I hope you have fun with it.. I played in G tuning for years before playing around in D or Vestable .. They have such different voices.. G in so bright and D is so somber... What kind of bar do you use.. I like Brass the most on acustics. Glass if I'm using the Telicaster.. ( That is very seldum though at this point))
All the best Guy Wolff

Just a passing contribution. I use a metal slide on my 4th finger and use the DADGAD tuning. As long as you can use your other fingers to fret there are some really great sounds to be found. Not easy to get hold of a slide guitar over here in Scotland. Envy you guys there.

Bests - Gerald.

SlickerBill, Just for fun, while you're learning something new, try sampling this nifty site which offers info on Slack key (Hawaiian) style. There is even a free sample lesson. (note:I have never subscribed to anything that requires me to pay money for lessons via websites & I'm not suggesting you do!) While I don't know this guy, his music is lovely, and a buddy of mine knows him. The tuning he uses is (from 1st to 6th or high to low): D B F# D G D Since most of us don't know much about Slack Key, it's enlightening to get a glimpse into something new to us. Kaleea

Great suggestions here. Seems I've got my work cut out for me.

I've been giving the G tuning a go. It's interesting how lost you feel when you've become accustomed to one or two tunings over quite a period of time. Funny you should say the G tuning suits Robert Johnson's stuff. I've learned many of them in the D tuning (Really just an open E tuning one step down). To me the G sounds the more sombre.

I think a big part is the ear; what you're more accustomed to hearing. What got me going on this was all these bluegrass players I've been hearing lately, and these beautiful lines they play over these tunes. But my mind can't quite think in those terms yet. Still more blues rather than bluegrass.

As far as brass vs glass, vs chrome, it kind of depends on the axe and the tune. glass is great for my Strat when I'm looking for a softer tone, but if I really want to get nasty the ol' chrome slide cuts very nicely. On acoustic I tend to go brass for softer stuff and chrome for more edge.

And Gerald, don't let a "lack" of slide guitars stop you. Find some old beater of a guitar (ie one that holds its tuning, but maybe the action's too high, etc.) and just tune it to an open tuning like D (or G!) and leave it there and pick er up once in a while and give it a go. I started with some RJ tunes, as well as some things like Sentimental Journey or amazing Grace (ala Rod Stewart's "Every Picture ... album). SB
