This is a sweet little tune for duet. I know about a third of it. Does anyone have the complete lyrics, and who it was originally done by? (Sounds like someone like Johnnie and Jack.)

James in Bristol, RI (not in the Savoie, which is in France)

The LATE, GREAT GENTLEMAN JIM REEVES-

HAVE I STAYED AWAY TOO LONG
Recorded by: Jim Reeves
Writer: Loesser

Have I Stayed Away Too Long?
Have I Stayed Away Too Long?
If I came home tonight-
Would you still be my darling?
Or Have I Stayed Away Too Long?

The lovelight that shone so strong
Pretty lovelight that shone so strong
If I came home tonight-
Would that same light be burning?
Or Have I Stayed Away Too Long?

I'm just outside of town
I'll soon be at your door
Maybe I'd be wrong to hurry there
I'd best keep out of town-
And worry you no more
Or maybe someone else has made you care.

Have all my dreams gone wrong
All my beautiful dreams gone wrong
If I came home tonight-
Would you still be my darling?
Or Have I Stayed Away Too Long?

Long before Jim Reeves, Tex Ritter had a big hit with this song in the mid to late 1940s.

Tex Ritter makes sense -- it clearly has the sound of a WWII return song, à la "I'm Comin' Back, But I Don't Know When". Ritter also explains why the friend of mine who taught what he remembered of it to me associated it with "Gene Ashtray" (former owner of the California Angels).

I think Gene Autry may have recorded it too.
