Subject: Bob Wills - Info Please
From: John in Brisbane
Date: 23 Dec 99 - 06:38 PM

I only know of Bob Wills original music recordings by reputation. I have a few questions please.

Are there any sound samples of his music on the Web?

I have a few photocopied pages of score transcriptions of his playing, but have no idea what the source of the original book may be. It includes Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star and another song which refers to Tulsa. Anyone able to help with a title please?

Is this country or folk - or more importantly does more of his music deserve to be in the DT? Somewhere else?

Any help appreciated. Regards, John

Bob Wills is a sort of country music called Texas Swing. This is dance music from the 30's, 40's and 50's, I think. Usually played with two or more fiddles, guiter, bass and lots of interesting vocals. I think Merle Haggard got started with Bob Wills. Bob himself was prone towards little yells and whoops but lead a great band. This is a big-deal band. Tapes and CD's are easy to find. Great stuff!

Among his hits were "Take Me Back to Tulsa" and "San Antonio Rose". I'm sure he had many more, but I can't recall them offhand. Merle Haggard was indeed with him for a while. Bob Wills is generally considered the father of Western Swing, which combined country/western and big band elements. He, Jimmie Rodgers, and Hank Williams are the "holy trinity" of the roots of commercial country music (in my opinion). I don't know how available his recordings are in Australia, but if you can find an album with the above two songs on it, it's probably a pretty good one to start with. Waylon Jennings wrote a sort of tribute to him and his music called "Bob Wills is Still the King". Sorry I don't know enough about the web to give you any guidance there. Hope you find what you're looking for. Oh, and I agree with Jim--great stuff!

There is NOTHING like ole Bob Wills' definitive "Ah Haw" and "San Antone". I love his music and agree with all of the above. I would say it was also honky-tonk music, as that is where he and his Texas Playboys played sometimes.

Here are some links with more info and sound clips, plus there are a lot of places on the web which have his music for sale.

This looked like the best one, during a quick check of Yahoo.

This one is about a Bob Wills Festival 99.

And, this one was the first to come up with sound clips.

Have fun!

"... and I grew up on music, that we called Western Swing. I doesn't matter who's in Austin - Bob Wills is still the king" -Waylon Jennings

Bob Wills and his Texas Playboys were the Kings of Western Swing in the 1930s, 1940s and early 50s. The lead vocalist for the group for most of the hit recordings was Tommy Duncan, a native of Whitney, Texas (located only a few miles from Abbot, Texas Willie Nelson's home town). The signature song of the group was "San Antonios Rose," composed by Bob Wills, but they had a succession of hits during the period including: "Take Me Back To Tulsa," "Steel Guitar Rag," written by Leon McAuliffe who also played steel guitar in the band, "Time Changes Everything", written by Tommy Duncan, Cindy Walker's, "Miss Molly", "Stay A Little Longer," written by Bob Wills and Tommy Duncan, and many more. The band also appeared in several "B" Western movies in the 1930s and 40s.

As Kat pointed out, several CDs are available in the U. S.

A number of modern day successful Country artists in the U. S. were influenced by the music of Bob Wills and his Texas Playboys. One group in particular is, "Asleep At The Wheel."
