Subject: Manx Music From: CE Morgan Date: 03 Dec 99 - 08:08 PM I'm looking for information on traditional music from the Isle of Man, in particular words and music. I have one harp book, "Manx Music for the Irish Harp", which mentions a publishing house on the Isle of Man, but they don't seem to be on the net. Does anyone know of any books or other resources? Thanks! Cindy Ellen

Subject: RE: Manx Music From: roopoo Date: 04 Dec 99 - 03:14 AM Hi A small amount of info, but I hope it helps. First. There is a huge tome of a (paperback) book called 'Folksongs of Britain and Ireland', edited by Peter Kennedy.ISBN 0.7119.0283.6 I am sitting with it on my lap as I write. I was an impulse buy of my husband's. According to the list on the back there are 6 songs, all in Manx. The songs are grouped by category within the book, and dots are provided! The other little crumb I can offer is a cd I got this time last year. It was made for the Past Times chain of shops in the UK and is on PT7243. (There is another reference number in case you need it as it was originally issued by Saydisc:CD-SDL 417). It's called Celtic Christmas and there's a lot of good stuff on it, including 3 from the Isle of Man. One is a carol, one is a wren hunting song, and one is a 'Carval on Base women'! A handy booklet containing lyrics (and translations) goes with it. There is also the good old dance tune, Mona's Delight, which can be found in many books of traditional dance tunes. Hope this has been of some help. mouldy |

Subject: RE: Manx Music From: bigJ Date: 05 Dec 99 - 07:58 AM I suspect that Bobby Bob has been too busy rehearsing for his part in the Manx Museum's 'Celtic Christmas' concert next Friday to reply to this thread, but until he does here goes: It depends whether you are looking for songs in English or Manx. If English then there are two 'Manx National Song Book' (Volumes 1 & 2 unsurprisingly) available. The first is a reprint of one published in Victorian times and contains 'newly written' words by such notable - and non Manx - personalities as A.P. Graves and James Hogg. But the tunes are fairly true to the tradition. The Volume 2 takes the Manx tradition through music-hall songs such as 'Kelly From the Isle of Man' to Hughie Jones's 'Wreck of the Ellan Vannin'. There are several inexpensive tune books - 'Kiaull yn Theay' Volumes 1&2 by Colin Jerry contain many tunes from the Manx tradition. For songs in Manx - although few tunes - there's 'Manx Ballads and Music' by A.W.Moore, originally published over a century ago, but recently republished by Llanerch Publishers, Felinfach, Wales in 1998. All of the above are available from the Manx Museum Shop, Douglas, Isle of Man. Trust this helps. |
