Below is the background information that is supposed to be quoted from the album you mentioned. FYI - this song also appears on Macalla and Past & Present by Clannad. -- Áine 'We came across this song in 'An Londudh agus Chairn' where Seamus Clandillon overheard women singing whilst mending nets at Bunbeg pier (Co. Donegal) about sixty years ago. It is a fragment of an occupation song praising the work of the blacksmith, farmer and fisherman. "When you move, then I move, and we'll all move together" is a translation of the chorus and this is supposed to be whispered by the birds of the apple tree to each other.'

You'll have to decide which fits the phrasing better. Remember if you have a line with two a's together, such as "B'fhearr liom-sa an gabha..." , you are likely to from a contraction and only pronounce one a sound. Seoirse begins the chorus: "Nuair a bhogfas tusa, bogfaidh mise, ..." Otherwise it's the same, but there should be an accent on "álainn" There are spelling, grammar and punctuation errors in the above transcription. I hope I don't also make some in the corrections(The original may well come from that Clannad site!) verse 3: Bfhearr = B'fhearr, h-aerach = haerach (differences in punctuation, not in sound) (Seoirse has "Bh'fearr liom-sa an feirmeoir 'tá seoladh amach go haerach". also he has 'oibir' but I think 'obair' is okay - you'll have to listen to see which pronunciation Clannad uses), dheas = deas,an chreafóg = na créafóig verse 4: the 'o' before oíche should have an accent, ó |

I did study some modern Irish so hopefully I can sort some of this out...I have not had a chance to match it against the recording and seeif this is indeed the song I am thinking of...(I mean "The Apple Tree" would seem a common enough title!) Crann referring to a certain part of a male's anatomy and Úll referring to the two things beside it.I also apologised if this caused offence to anyone, none was neant. There is a school of thought which thinks this to be an allegorical song, and the translation of the chorus should show why. I could go on, but I don't wish to offend anyone else. Craoibhín Aoibhinn, although literally meaning a small branch, is sometimes seen as the previously mentioned part of a male's anatomy. This, by the way, is not a school of thought invented by me. I wondered about that; thought it weird that a site with all those heavy metal bands would also have Clannad lyrics...go figure. My spelling and pronunciation are pretty good re: Irish but not my grammar; so I will check out these songs carefully before memorizing them I guess...I fins the best method of learning songs in Gaelic or Irish is to listen to a recording of the preferred version while looking at the words...if one has that luxury...otherwise, if one has _any_ recording to work from it is helpful... thanks again!!! peg
