Subject: RE: Princess Victoria From: Herge Date: 04 Dec 99 - 06:31 PM The incident occurred when the above named ship sank on route from Stranrer to Larne. A friend of mine and fellow muscian lost his father, and I was wondering did anyone mark the occassion in music as is sometimes the tradition in such incidents! Herge |

Subject: RE: Princess Victoria From: GUEST,Brian Torley Date: 25 Aug 08 - 12:44 PM I attended the Celtic Connections festival in Glasgow this January and heard a song performed that led me to look up articles about the sinking (of which I was unaware)untill then. It was a very poignent song performed on the Danny Kyle open stage by the composer but I never picked up his name and as the stage is only open to unsigned artists I am still in the dark. I will be attending again in 2009 and try and get some more info then |

Subject: RE: Princess Victoria From: GUEST Date: 28 Oct 12 - 09:24 PM This brings back old memories, two neighbours were on board, one drowned, the other was saved. The heroism of the ship's radio operator was particularly outstanding, it was reported that he stayed at his post, sending out distress signals until the ship went down. |

Subject: RE: songs about RMS Princess Victoria sinking From: GUEST,Roger Dunant Guest Date: 03 Aug 13 - 07:48 AM 40 years ago I sailed on a Bibby Line ship, the MV Berkshire, a car/bulk carrier, as electrician. One of the junior engineers was a lad called Gilbert Locke. His dad was the Chief Engineer on the Princess Victoria. The awful thing about it was that Gil never knew his dad as the ship was lost 6 weeks before he was born. Even more sad was the fact that his dad was just doing the one trip as a stand in for a friend. I never saw Gil again after that trip but that was normal in the MN, best of mates when you're on board and ashore but then you never see each other again. I've never heard any songs about the Vicky but there is a pipe tune called 'Lament for the Princess Victoria'. If you search the web for MV Princess Victoria there's lots of info about the disaster. Subject: RE: songs about RMS Princess Victoria sinking From: GUEST Date: 03 Aug 13 - 11:48 PM "David Broadfoot was born in 1900 and started work as a GPO messenger before going to a Marconi College where he trained to be a wireless operator. He had served on several other ships before joining the 'Princess Victoria' on 2nd October 1950. On 20th October 1953, Mrs Muriel Broadfoot, of Royal Avenue, Stranraer, accompanied by her 13-year-old son William, attended an investiture at Buckingham Palace to receive the George Cross from HM the Queen, which had been awarded posthumously to her husband." |
