Subject: Lyr/Tune Add: WILLY REILLY (Ewan MacColl)^^
From: John in Brisbane
Date: 09 Nov 99 - 01:55 AM

MacColl wrote many songs about different jobs. Here's one about the tea-boy on building sites. Today he would probably be referred to as an 'out-sourced sub-contractor'. Regards, John

WILLY REILLY
(as recorded by Ewan MacColl)

You walk along Fitzsimmon Street with an independent air,
Your schooldays are behind you now and the girls can all beware;
For now you're finished with arithmetic,
With history and the teacher's stick,
They can stuff 'em up their nostrils, Willy Reilly.

You're off to work at the break of day, a fine young labouring man;
Riding a brand new bike you've bought on the never- never plan
Dodging among the trucks and cars
With your lunch a-swinging from the handlebars,
You're a broth of a brewboy - Willy Reilly.

You're lost on the building site at first, it's all so strange and new;
But the timekeeper will put you right and tell you what to do;
He says you're a very important man
In charge of the fire and the boiling cans -
You're the nipper, you're the brewboy, Willy Reilly.

It's round the site and collect your cans from the workers on the job,
For the brickies and spreads and chippies and sparks and the blokes who carry the hod;
Get the tea brewed up for ten o'clock
And at half past twelve brew another little drop,
You're the nipper, you're the brew boy, Willy Reilly.

When you've done your stuff with the sugar and tea, you're near run off your feet,
Fetch this! Fetch that! Go here, go there! You've hardly time to eat;
But Saturday comes and then you can
Get a tanner or a bob from every man -
That's money in your pocket, Willy Reilly.

When you've done two years as a nipper you're the keeper of the fire,
You're the high priest of the boiling can and you can't get no higher.
You're eager now to meet your fate
It's time for you to graduate
To the pick and the shovel, Willy Reilly.

Never heard this one. Appears to be based on "Dicey Reilly". Same tune? Haven't attempted to play it yet.

Regards

forgive me for being dumb but does that mean that Dicey Reilly and Willy Reilly are different songs altogher??

Which one is the Australian tune "Frank Gardiner" based on?

Does anyone know from where and from whom was "Frank Gardiner" collected?

Does anyone know which CDs Willie Reilly appears?
