Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Now is the Hour From: Liz the Squeak Date: 09 Nov 99 - 05:06 AM Was it not originally a Polynesian song? Either Hawaiian or Maoiri, I know both sing it, in their own languages, because I was at a Maoiri 'do' in Rotorua, NZ years ago, when they sang it, and it just sounded right. I think it was originally Hawaiian though. I may be wrong, I usually am... LTS |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Now is the Hour From: Penny S. Date: 09 Nov 99 - 02:40 PM Watch out. I posted a while back about this one. I read an article about an author who wanted to use phrases from it, with other works in a novel (Barbara something - it'll come back, but I can't post from home at the moment). This one has a tune which came from a Norwegian folk song, heard by Maoris from Norwegian sailors, given Maori words, then translated into English. The copyright for all of these is held by an office in London for an Australian company. She couldn't quote it. Penny |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Now is the Hour From: andyjim Date: 09 Nov 99 - 04:05 PM I've only heard it on an old 78 we had many years ago when I was young. The record was called Songs of the United Nations, and included Tecelote de Guadania, Waltzing Matilda, My Father Gave me an Acre of Land, Jane Jane Come to the Glen, and other obscure things. Wish I had that record. Apologies for the destraction. |

There's a wonderful fragment of b&w film of the Maori singer Ana Hato singing this to gentle banjo accompaniment in the 1930s, in the collection of the NZ Film Archive. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Now is the Hour From: GUEST Date: 22 Mar 10 - 06:37 AM I remember this song like it was yesterday. My Maori friend's mother used to sing it to say goodbye to friends. We would all end up with tears in our eyes. I was only 8 or 9 years old. He has passed on now, this memory of him playing guitar and his mother singing will never die. |
