Either Hawaiian or Maoiri, I know both sing it, in their own languages, because I was at a Maoiri 'do' in Rotorua, NZ years ago, when they sang it, and it just sounded right. I read an article about an author who wanted to use phrases from it, with other works in a novel (Barbara something - it'll come back, but I can't post from home at the moment). This one has a tune which came from a Norwegian folk song, heard by Maoris from Norwegian sailors, given Maori words, then translated into English. The copyright for all of these is held by an office in London for an Australian company. She couldn't quote it. Penny |

The record was called Songs of the United Nations, and included Tecelote de Guadania, Waltzing Matilda, My Father Gave me an Acre of Land, Jane Jane Come to the Glen, and other obscure things. We would all end up with tears in our eyes. I was only 8 or 9 years old. He has passed on now, this memory of him playing guitar and his mother singing will never die. |
