From: Susanne (skw)

This song was mentioned in the 'political campaigns' thread, and I wonder if anyone can help me with the French bits.

Pierre Trudeau is very astute
Not only that, he really is cute
He's got ideas and get-up-and-go
That's why I like Pierre Trudeau

Pierre Trudeau, un homme savant
Et quelque fois un homme charmant
Il va saumont il ait de l'eau (?)
Et tres gentil, Pierre Trudeau

Pierre Trudeau he comes from Quebec
But doesn't think like René Lavesque
He wants to see our Canada grow
Both strong and free, Pierre Trudeau

Pierre Trudeau, il parle pian
Avec grandeur, sans peurte rien
Les liberons (?), ils sont idiots
Il dit cela, Pierre Trudeau

Pierre Trudeau has positive views
Casts totems down and breaks the taboos
Forget the past, the old status quo
Try something new, Pierre Trudeau

Pierre Trudeau (?) un air riche
C'est pour l'argent il dit 'je m'en fiche'
De meur estrong on a grand jeton (?)
Tout simplement Pierre Trudeau

Pierre Trudeau he doesn't conform
In thought or dress to what is the norm
He is unique, we want you to know
There's no one like Pierre Trudeau

Pierre Trudeau, c'est l'homme pour moi
Il veut garder (?) toi
Et quand il parle j'ecoute ses mots
Car il est sage, Pierre Trudeau

(René Lavesque - then leader of the Quebecois separatist movement)

God Susan I wish I could help you. I can get a bit of the drift of most of it but surely a Cat with a little "savoir faire" can help more than I can. (Like Joe Offer perhaps)
I'll keep it from disappearing though, til you get your answer. Other Mudcatters that I bet can help: Peter T. Katlaughing, Tony Burns, Scarpi, Alice?

Well, thanks for trying, Rick! And pardon my French! I've no doubt it must look rather strange to anyone who actually speaks the language. (Although as far as I know Canadian French shows marked differences from standard French. Maybe that's part of the problem.) - Susanne

Sure, Rick, you're the one who was raised in Mown-trey-ahl!

Susanne, I just thought this was a lyric add, so didn't know you were looking for info, 'til now. When Rog is awake, like, uh, tomorrow, I will ask him to take a look. His dad was from Ilse Verte in the St. Laurent River and his mom was first generation American of French Canadian descent, plus Rog went to parochial school where they spoke French in the a.m. and English in the p.m. Hopefully he will remember enough to help out.

Bob Landry should be able to help, too. He once gave me a wonderful "French" lesson via messages. I had to guess at a translation of a message about his very musical family. Had to use a dictionary, but I didn't do too badly.

Later,

katlaughing

Echos of Trudeaumania ... shades of 1968 ... Some of the words do look a bit strange, but not because they may be a variant of the standard language ... more a question of phonetics. OK, Suzanne (skw), you asked for it: Bob

---------

Verse 2:

Pierre Trudeau, un homme savant
(Pierre Trudeau, a wise man)

Et quelque fois un homme charmant
(And some of the time a charming man)

Il va saumont il ait de l'eau (?)
(He goes ??? he has [or there is] some water)
- "saumont" is not a word I've ever heard. But "saumon" is the word for salmon. It may be a reference to PET's (E is for Elliot, his middle name) diving and swimming prowess.] so let's try:
"Il va sautant, il est dans l'eau"
(He goes diving, he's in the water)
or
"Comme un saumon, il est dans l'eau"
(He's like a salmon in the water)

Et tres gentil, Pierre Trudeau
(And very nice, Pierre Trudeau)

Verse 4

Pierre Trudeau, il parle pian (this should be "bien")
(Pierre Trudeau, he speaks well)

Avec grandeur, sans peurte (the could be "perdre") rien (With grandeur, losing nothing)

Les liberons (should be libereaux), ils sont idiots
(The Liberals, they are idiots)
- This is a strange comment to make about the leader of the Liberal Party of Canada ... unless the author was being facetious thoughout this entire ditty ... and that's quite probable.

Il dit cela, Pierre Trudeau
(He says that, Pierre Trudeau)

Verse 6:

Pierre Trudeau (? - should be "a") un air riche
(Pierre Trudeau has a rich air)

C'est pour l'argent il dit 'je m'en fiche'
("It's for the money" he says "I don't care")

De meur estrong on a grand jeton (?)
(..............................a big token)
- This line is almost completely illegible so let's try:
"Il me restera qu'un grand jeton"
(All I'll have is but one token)

Tout simplement Pierre Trudeau
(Very simply, Pierre Trudeau)

Verse 8

Pierre Trudeau, c'est l'homme pour moi
(Pierre Trudeau, he's the man for me)

Il veut garder (?) toi
(he wants to keep ...... you)
- I have no idea what the missing word should be

Et quand il parle j'ecoute ses mots
(And when he speaks, I listen to his words)

Car il est sage, Pierre Trudeau
(For he is wise, Pierre Trudeau)

Bob (going buggy from all those line breaks)

Bob, this is wonderful! Thank you very much for taking the trouble to do it. Now I'll go and listen and see if I can make some sense of the (tiny) rest. - Susanne
