Subject: RE: Help: hero search... From: Allan C. Date: 07 Oct 99 - 08:03 AM Songs about heroes could fill a rather large box. Are you interested in Real Life Heroes, such as Davey Crockett or the Fictional kind like, say, Paul Bunyon? Or would you care to include those which nobody can decide upon, like maybe, John Henry? |

Subject: RE: Help: hero search... From: Magpie Date: 07 Oct 99 - 03:38 PM Hello Kirsten Mo Ghile Mear "Our Hero" is a song written in honour of Prince Charles Stewart, or Bonnie Prince Charlie, as he is also known by. It can be found on the Chieftains' album "The Long Black Veil". There it is sung (not very well, I'm afraid, but...) by Sting. It is in gaelic, and I don't have the words, nor do I know of any translation, but it is a very nice song. Another hero song is "Joe McDonnell", about seven prisoners who died for Ireland in a hunger strike. You'll find it on The Wolfe Tones' album "A sense of freedom". Well, that's two. Magpie |

Subject: RE: Help: hero search... From: paddymac Date: 07 Oct 99 - 04:01 PM Kirsten - Hero songs abound in the Irish rebel tradition. My guess would be that they are also abundant in traditions of other oppressed peoples. Don't think of "Oppressed" only in terms of ethnicity or nationality. The labor movement, for example, has many heros in many countries. Just think of victims of oppression, where ever or when ever they may be, and it should lead you to more hero songs than you ever imagined. Good luck searching. |

Subject: RE: Help: hero search... From: bill\sables Date: 07 Oct 99 - 05:10 PM Hi Kirsten, In October 1995 Brenda Orrell a lady in Whitby UK wrote a song called "Heroes". It was about the rescue of the crew of the Brig "Visitor" which ran aground off Robin Hoods Bay on Jan 18 1881. The Whitby lifeboat could not be launched because of the storm so 200 local men and 18 horses decided to carry the lifeboat six miles overland to the Bay. This task was hampered by heavy snow and most of the men were employed diging out snow from the path. After six hours they launched the boat and saved the stricken sailors. They were true heroes.
