Subject: Tune Add: WEEVILS IN THE FLOUR (Dorothy Hewett) From: John in Brisbane Date: 04 Oct 99 - 03:10 AM In my opinion one of the best Australian social commentary poems/songs ever written. I was surprised to find it missing from the database. Can someone oblige with the lyrics please? As I recall the author Dorothy Hewett had to fight some court actions against largest company BHP over her allegations of pollution. Regards, John.

WEEVILS IN THE FLOUR
On an island in a river
For dole bread is bitter bread
And just across the river
In those humpies by the river
On an island in a river For dole bread is bitter bread

Subject: RE: Tune Add/Lyr Req: Weevils In The Flour From: GUEST,Joe Flood Date: 05 Sep 02 - 01:18 AM Tune by Michael Leydon, one of the best known "folk songs" of its era. The poem described the story of her childhood told to Mum by her friend the writer Vera Deakin, who still lives in Sydney and attended her funeral last week. BHP closed its doors a couple of years ago and is now a museum to early industrialization in Australia. And no, they didnt sue, that was her ex-husband for another poem. |
