Subject: THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: HAPPY BIRTHDAY! From: Peter T. Date: 01 Oct 99 - 09:14 AM What else? Happy Third Birthday, Mudcat. I have thanked the founders before, but doesn't hurt to do it again. Mex, Dick, Susan -- congratulations from your farflung empire. You have brought great things into my life, and great people. It was a blessed day I stumbled onto this site, almost 3 years ago now, asked Gene a question, and have been hanging around the place ever since. Happy Birthday! yours, Peter T. |

Subject: RE: THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: HAPPY BIRTHDAY! From: Peter T. Date: 01 Oct 99 - 10:04 AM Stupid typo got me thinking of typical moments where a guy giving a toast trips over the mike wire. It suddenly reminded me of a classic minor screw-up incident in my life. I was taking a girl I was smitten with on a first date to a dance, and we were both incredibly nervous about it (15 years old). It was a summer dance, and I had somehow got a cream suit, and I went out and bought her some almost cream coloured roses, which were all thorny and prickly, and got to her door, and she opened the door, and I handed her the roses, and I had blood down the arm of the suit! I had been clutching the bouquet so tight that thorns from the roses had scratched my hand, but I was too terrified to really notice! It worked out O.K.: she kissed my hand to make it better!!Wrecked the suit though. Funny to remember that -- a Mudcat moment!! yours, Peter T. Happy Birthday, encore!! (From a nervous suitor). |

Subject: RE: THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: HAPPY BIRTHDAY! From: Roger in Baltimore Date: 01 Oct 99 - 10:33 AM Happy Birthday to a place, an idea, a community that has significantly altered my life in a way that only fellow Mudcatters might understand. I grew up in a small town that is not so small anymore. I think here I have found a small town atmosphere in a site that encompasses the globe. I guess the Luddites were wrong, technology ain't all bad. Thanks to the founding personages. Even to Dennis Cook (a co-founder of the DT) who just shakes his head when I mention the Mudcat. Subject: RE: THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: HAPPY BIRTHDAY! From: Joe Offer Date: 01 Oct 99 - 11:52 AM Well, I did a search, something I do about a thousand times a day. Click here for a rather interesting message from Max, who has had some darn good things to say for a not-so-prolific poster (541 messages total, it says). Click Here for Thread Number Four, which is the earliest thread the search engine can find. Here is Thread Number One but, as you can see, the date of the message is later. Dick Greenhaus, of course, has been here from the beginning - Click here to see the first of his 1521 posts, Message Number 49. Click here for the first of 614 messages from Susan of DT, who first posted on 1 Nov 1996. Her message was Number 222. Can you believe it took a whole month for 222 messages to be posted back then? I wonder which of the "regulars" have been posting since 1997. I came in January, 1997, so I don't count. I checked the first fifty messages. the familiar names among those posters were RS and KickyC, whom we haven't seen recently; and Gene Graham, who posted even before Dick Greenhaus got here. The first several messages seemed to be mostly Max talking to himself. Gee, I think he still does that....(grin) Thanks to Max and Dick and Susan. We're proud to know you. -Joe Offer- Oh, one more - Click here for the first lyrics request, Message Number Five. You won't believe what song they asked for.... |

Subject: RE: THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: HAPPY BIRTHDAY! From: Joe Offer Date: 01 Oct 99 - 12:29 PM Hi, Peter (I added a couple more links above, that you might like to see) I used to stop at the Xerox Digital Tradition site, and posted at the rec.music.folk newsgroup. I struck up an acquaintance with Sam Hinton and Abby Sale at rec.music.folk, and there was a guy named dick greenhaus who posted there a lot. I think the Xerox site closed early in 1996 (Dick, can you give us dates), and people at rec.music.folk were mightily upset about it. I guess I must have found out about the 'Cat from a post at rec.music.folk. I struck up an acquaintance with Sam Hinton and Abby Sale at rec.music.folk, and there was a guy named dick greenhaus who posted there a lot. I think what got me hooked on researching songs was a question somebody asked about Woody Guthrie's "Deportee (Plane Wreck at Los Gatos Canyon)." It was a thrill to find the New York Times article that inspired Woody to write the song, and then to be able to pinpoint exactly where the wreck occurred. I'm surprised I didn't get here sooner - but Fall is when I travel a lot. When the 'Cat was opening its doors, I think I was wandering in Nova Scotia, imagining myself a "broken man on a Halifax pier." -Joe Offer- |

Subject: RE: THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: HAPPY BIRTHDAY! From: bseed(charleskratz) Date: 01 Oct 99 - 12:59 PM Joe, some day when I have absolutely nothing to do I'll follow all those links and read every message on them--I'm sure it will be a blast. That first lyrics request was amazing: the poster was directed to the Trad, no one posted the lyrics or tried to work out the HTML to make the round come out as a round, no one quibbled about how the first to post the lyrics got them all wrong, no one commented on the ethnic or historical or socio-political background of the song or suggested that it was the devil's invitation to a pointless life or a subtle suggestion from the singer to the listener to just go away or an example of capitalist propagandizing, a subliminal suggestion that labor, particularly endlessly repetitive labor, is fulfilling, even joy producing--nobody protested whoever wrote the song and anyone who sings it is a presumptious bastard who's got no right to tell the listener what to do so keep yer fockin' orders to yourself, no poster was so smitten by another that he/she spent the next three years slobbering in technicolor over him/her (unless they did it on another thread)...of course, I may be wrong about all this: Fr. Joebro may have just bowdlerized this original lyrics request so we'd all appreciate the purity of his vision--nah, he'd have also purged the thread of all requests for the lyrics of other songs. Just kidding, Joe. I'm only still a little bit miffed about your editing out my posting of lyrics in favor of your own when we were working on them simultaneously (heh, heh). Max's impregnating the elves seems to have passed to the offspring only the best of genes: The child is sweet of disposition and has an amazing ability to resist infection (although I will admit there are those, few in number but nonetheless part of the population, who feel it's suffering from cyberstaphylococcus, a flesh-eating variety, a disease manifesting itself in hallucinations of porcelain possums, leather-clad fender-toting shorebirds, massive labor organizers with potatoes up their butts, various permutations of cats and kats and owls and whatever rough beasts are slouching toward Bethlehem to be borne away by the music, the laughter, the vile black stuff, and things too fierce to mention). The godparents, Dick and Susan, have continued to foster the child's education (although somehow they have managed to ignore all of my attempts to add lyrics to songs from my aberrent repertoire). Gawd, how I love this place! --seed |

Subject: RE: THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: HAPPY BIRTHDAY! From: Joe Offer Date: 01 Oct 99 - 03:16 PM Hi, BSeed - I thought the only time I've edited out lyrics is when they were copied directly from the Digital Tradition. In those cases, I've occasionally shortened messages by deleting all but the first stanza of a song, and leaving a link instead of the deleted stanzas. If I deleted a set of lyrics you got somewhere else, I was mistaken. Sorry. I try to be very careful about editing, so that I don't delete anything unless it's an exact duplicate. I suppose I do goof up sometimes, but I try my best not to delete any content. -Joe- |

Subject: RE: THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: HAPPY BIRTHDAY! From: Allan C. Date: 01 Oct 99 - 04:00 PM Happy Birthday! Thanks to the Mudcat for filling so many hours with so much information, fun, love, and a whole mess of other stuff which defies description. But a reminder here to those who are locked into thanking Max, Susan, Dick, et al. The Mudcat is US. And I thank all of you who come here. It means much more to me than I can express to be able to spend time here with you. (Damn! I'm getting all teary-eyed...) An aside here to Joe. Thank you, Joe, for all the little things you do. The clickies, the HTML corrections, the splicing - and so much more that I am sure goes undetected by most of us. |

Subject: RE: THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: HAPPY BIRTHDAY! From: catspaw49 Date: 01 Oct 99 - 04:07 PM Happy Birthday to the Mudcat Cafe...Finest Place in the World. Like RiB, I grew up in a small town and like I will always remember from Sandy, "I always wanted to live somewhere like this." Now we all do. Many Thanks to "Blind Waxin' Max"--I see he was waxin' away back then too! Cleigh is overjoyed at the birth of his sibling Barbara...he was wondering about the birth and his glad he "popped out" on such an appropriate day. And being one of Seed's disease carriers, I left a bunch of effluvia over at the Tavern for the party. But I also know the joy, love, caring, and compassion...not to mention the healing powers... of the Mudcat!!! Great Music, Great Humor, Great Friends........Gotta' be a bit amazed at what you've done here, aren't you Max? *************HAPPY BIRTHDAY MUDCAT*************

Subject: RE: THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: HAPPY BIRTHDAY! From: Max Date: 01 Oct 99 - 05:02 PM Amazed? Are you kidding, I had it all planned. I knew this would happen. Hmmmph. Well, I'd like to take the opportunity to thank who is really responsible for all of this. YOU ALL. I just geeked a couple of lines of code together because dick and I would always get so much email with Lyric Requests and Lyric Adds, kind words, just great stuff. (and a lot of stupid questions). It's really all of you that made this place what it is, and I too am constantly touched by the kindness, knowledge, and downright great people here. dick greenhaus has always been a tremendous influence on me. Being a Penn State Football fan, I compare him to our coach Joe Paterno. INTEGRITY. I not only trust his judgement, but admire it. His thoughts on music, folk, community have guided me in my efforts with the Mudcat. It was he that ispired me to make the Mudcat what it is today. Thank you dick for trusting me with your baby, the Digitrad. It was a really good thing that dick and I met. He had the Digitrad and a long and thorough knowledge of the folk community and music, and I was a bright eyed kid full of piss and vinegar that loved music too. I was also hooked on this technology stuff, and couldn't wait to see what I could do with it. It could not have been a better matchup. If I made a gezillion dollars with my skills and ideas, I would not be as proud as I am now to have had a hand in this. The Mudcat, all of you, make me proud of myself. In a world that seems to like to bring one down, this keeps me up and gives me purpose and meaning. I love you guys, and can't wait for the next 25 years. Happy Birthday. |

Subject: RE: THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: HAPPY BIRTHDAY! From: lamarca Date: 01 Oct 99 - 05:20 PM As a Born-Again 'Catter, I want to thank Max, Dick and the cyber-elves (or is that E-elves...?)for creating the "organized" (?) religion that this weak mind has embraced, but also want to thank all of you that come here to find lyrics, post lyrics, explore different types of music, argue, drink (virtually or virtuously), giggle, blow oppossum asses, and do all the silly, profound and wonderful things that can be done with a keyboard and a link to the rest of the world. I have never lost my sense of wonder about being able to talk to people in Australia, Ireland, Germany, Iceland, England, Canada and even Michigan about the music I love. Mudcat IS its people! Happy Birthday, Mudcat - I'm glad you're here. |

Subject: RE: THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: HAPPY BIRTHDAY! From: --seed Date: 01 Oct 99 - 05:47 PM I'm posting from school where I was breaking up while reading Etiquette Question #2 when a colleague asked what was laughing about. I tried to explain the Mudcat and my addiction, reading selections from the first Etiquette Question thread, and she responded, "You spend two hours every night hooked up to a discussion forum?" as if it weren't a perfectly normal thing to do (IS it a perfectly normal thing to do?). Subject: Official Mudcat History From: Joe Offer Date: 01 Oct 99 - 06:03 PM Say, Max and Dick and Susan, how 'bout a little history lesson? There's a pretty good history of the Digital Tradition here, but what about the online history? When was the DT at the Xerox site? Was it ever on the Web at any other location? Did the Xerox site have a forum or any other features? Did the DT come online at the Mudcat Cafe before the Forum opened? How long did the 'Cat exist before the Forum? -Joe Offer- |

Subject: RE: THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: HAPPY BIRTHDAY! From: Big Mick Date: 01 Oct 99 - 08:05 PM I have no way to express what this wonderful creation has done for me. It has given me friends, real honest to goodness friends. You know who you are. I am not going to name you for fear of forgetting someone. And to one in particular, well.....you know. It has helped me to make the acquaintance of more decent people than I would ever have thought possible. The Mudcat has broadened my understanding of the land of my people and its triumphs and troubles, more in two years and with more depth than the previous 10 years of study and discussion. I have come to know honorable people with different positions than mine. They may not have changed my mind as to what must happen, but they have certainly caused me to rethink the approach that must be taken. And the music of my people, that most sacred part of the soul of all the Irish, has taken on a new depth. I understand more of its origins, its meaning, than I would have ever thought possible. Musicians like Dan Milner, Sandy and Carolyn Paton, Barry Finn, Frank Hamilton and all the rest of you, have allowed me to make leaps in my own journey. And you have shown me a path I must follow. One of the things I am most grateful for is the ability to tell you of my own journey. To be able to share lessons learned, and mysteries that I still ponder. This is priceless to me. I have been able to share things here that I have never been able to speak elsewhere. I have been able to tell you of David, whose death I mourn yet. I have been able to share with you the time when I was lost, almost for good. I have been able to tell you of the children who taught Santa such valuable lessons, Muchas Gracias, ninos y ninas. And of the lovely young woman trying to raise her kids, I see her face today. So to Dick and Susan, for your gift of the Digital Tradition, I say thanks. Your vision in creating and maintaining this was brilliant and generations to come will benefit. I have saved Max for last. Brother, I hope these folks realize the price you have paid, and continue to pay for this creation of yours. And while I know that certain losses can never be made up, I hope you can feel the love and admiration that the citizens of this place feel for you. You are a pretty amazing human being to have allowed this to have evolved in the way it has. I am, and forever will be, in your debt. And not only that, but I am proud and fortunate to call you friend. Big Mick |

Subject: RE: THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: HAPPY BIRTHDAY! From: Jeri Date: 01 Oct 99 - 08:09 PM Happy Birthday to Mudcat!!! Many thanks to Dick and Susan for their deep and faithful love of the music that created the Digital Tradition. And to Max, this place you've made is the world the way it should be. It has to do with the folks who hang out here, but none of us would have found a home without you. I have a great deal of admiration for your technical skills and I enjoy your sense of humor. But to create such a thing as Mudcat and simply give it to the world... And this post has been orchestrated. As I type, I'm listening to Rick Fielding's new CD for the first time. The song, totally unplanned, is "When We Gather Here Once More." |

Subject: RE: THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: HAPPY BIRTHDAY! From: katlaughing Date: 01 Oct 99 - 11:51 PM Ditto, what Mick & Jeri said! Max, uh, isn't about time you got around to naming those "elves"??**BG** Seriously, as many of you know, I foudn teh Mudcat while looking for lyrics in late Dec. 1998, for my dad, who is 82 and still entertaining, making music. Less than twenty days later, my mother died unexpectedly. I have said, since the, many times, I do not know what I would have done without the Mudders I ahve met here and grown to love. While my family was there for me, too, they all were full of grief and having a hard time coping, too. It is difficult for me to describe the great depth of compassion and caring I was given and continue to enjoy here. In the time after mom's passing, I kept looking for more lyrics for dad and joined in the fun, too. When I met all of you, I never realised just what an incredible and lasting impact it would have on my life. This was never made more clear to me, and to others, than on April Fool's Day, when Max had most of us convinced the Mudcat was closing its doors. A lot of us were glued to our computers and telephones that day. When we were able to finally heave a collective sigh of relief, Max had to worry a bit about sleeping out in camp in Montana and elsewhere lest one of us play a little "joke" on him.**BG** All of this would not have happened without you and your vision, Max, and that of Dick and Susan. Thanks will never be enough, but please know I think it is Cosmic **BG** and I give thanks for it and all of the Mudcatters every day of my life. Blessed Be, katlaughingjoyously |
