My grandparents were born in Millstreet, CO. CORK. It would be nice to connect by song or tune. Thanks, Boston Bill

Bill, I've been digging for 'Millstreet' and the only song I've found is not a song about Millstreet but a sports song mentioning Millstreet in the last verse. Drop me a line here if you want to have all of it (no further mention of Millstreet). But I'll be off for at least a week, so you'd have to be patient.

Wolfgang

a verse from 'When Clon came Home' (T. ÓCannain, Songs of Cork):

"Togher" Casey was codding his man near the hour -
Hand and foot he kept dodging, then driving with power.
Macroom and Millstreet and Cork Town but the flower
were Weesh and Tadhg Crowley our captain.
So here's to our footballers, fearless and free,
Clonakilty, Rosscarbery, and famed Dunmanway.
The Sam Maguire Cup has come home to the Lee
Agus fágfaimíd siúd mar atá sé.
(about the decisive game on 23rd of Sept. 1945, when Cork was beating Cavan in the All-Ireland Football Championship)

Hi,

Can't help with the song...... but the last line of Wolfgang's one, (Agus fágfaimíd siúd mar atá sé), looks like the tune is the same as "The Limerick rake" which has the same last line.

Probably in the database..

slainte

Subject: Lyr Add: WHEN CLONE CAME HOME (Paddy Meegan)^^

Here's the whole song, Bill. Not a song about Millstreet, but at least Millstreet is mentioned. I played the tune to me on the flute but couldn't recognise it, so perhaps it has been composed to the occasion though that is not probable. I'll send a xerox of the tune to Dick at the end of the year, so perhaps in one or two years you'll see it in the DT. If you can't wait, I'd snailmailing a xerox to you as well.

Wolfgang

WHEN CLONE CAME HOME
(written by: Paddy Meegan)

'Twas up at Crooke Park on last Sunday I hear
that the Corkmen faced Cavan whose fame was so dear:
Those Northmen were good and our scores they ran near,
but we held them and led them and beat them.
'Twas Beckett's grand goal, sure, that finished the fray
and Tubridy's pace was the talk of the day.
But our backs were like granite where Weeshy held sway,
Agus fágfaimíd siúd mar atá sé.

Brave Crone and Dave Magnier from sweet old Fermoy,
Din Connor, Pat Cronin our pride and our joy,
Ross-Fachna, O'Donovan ranging and coy,
and where would you leave Eamon Young, boys!
He dummied and drove like his father of old,
and showed them some tricks from Dunmanway, I'm told;
Humphrey Neill and Jack Lynch and Jim Cronin so bold
set our heroes like beagles in tongue, boys.

Togher" Casey was codding his man near the hour -
Hand and foot he kept dodging, then driving with power.
