Subject: Lyr Add: CATFISH BLUES (Skip James) From: Jim Dixon Date: 28 Nov 11 - 08:02 PM My transcription from the recording I heard on Spotify: CATFISH BLUES As sung by Skip James on "Blues from the Delta" (2006).* I would rather be a little catfish, So I could swim way down in the sea. I would have somebody, somebody, Settin' out hooks for me, settin' out hooks for me, hook for— You know I went to my baby's house. She told me to set down on the step. Said, you can come right on in because my Husband's just now left, he just now left, he just now— An' I asked my baby to let me set outside her gate. Turn on your heat up, baby, Till it turn cherry red, cherry red, cherry— Now see now, I'd rather be a little catfish So I could swim way down in the sea. I would have men an' some o' these women Settin' out a line for me, settin' out a line for me, a line for— You know I went to the church-house, And because of(?) me to pray. I got down on my knees, but I didn't have a word to say, Not a word to say, a word to s— See, now, I'd rather be a little catfish So I could swim way down in the sea. I would have somebody, somebody, Settin' out a line for me, settin' out a line for me, a line for— I don't want to be no tadpole, And I don't want to be no bullfrog, And if I can't be, be a catfish, I won't swim at all; I won't swim at all, swim at— Now, see, now, I want to be a little catfish So I could swim way down in the sea. I would have these good-lookin' women Settin' out a hook for me, settin' out a hook for me, hook for— [* I believe it's the same recording as on "Devil Got My Woman" (2006). He definitely made more than one recording of this song, and the lyrics vary somewhat.] |

Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords Req: Catfish Blues (Skip James) From: Bobert Date: 28 Nov 11 - 08:26 PM "Catfish Blues" is one of the most covered blues songs out there and every blues player has his or her own version... Unless you are trying to "cover" Skip James version note for note then just enjoy the song and play it where it feels comfortable... I've done it for years and never done it the same way twice... It's that kinda song... Wide open... B~ |
