Subject: RE: kelly joe phelps fans? From: Tony Burns Date: 08 Sep 99 - 09:57 PM Hmmmm... nobody else knows Kelly Joe? I've been impressed by Kelly Joe but I've a suspicion that he's a one trick pony. Anyone care to comment? Should I give him another chance? |

Subject: RE: kelly joe phelps fans? From: Mike Regenstreif Date: 08 Sep 99 - 10:26 PM Absolutely. Kelly Joe Phelps was a guest on my radio show in July and I was very impresses with his abilities as a singer and guitarist and of the depth of his knowledge of the blues, gospel and ballad traditions. He's done his homework. After having him on the show, I watched him work a large crowd at the Montreal Jazz Festival proving he's also a fine entertainer. Mike Regenstreif |

Subject: RE: kelly joe phelps fans? From: Bryant Date: 08 Sep 99 - 11:26 PM I picked up a copy of Roll Away the Stone a year or so ago and liked it quite a bit. Really nice slide playing and a great, earthy baritone voice. The religious facet of it is a little aggravating but I'd agree with Mike's comment -- he knows the tradition and plays it with respect. So, I'm not a huge fan but I do like his work. Bryant |

Subject: RE: kelly joe phelps fans? From: Frank Hamilton Date: 09 Sep 99 - 09:51 AM I had the pleasure of hearing him on Prairie Home Companion and I was immediately taken with his musicality. His ideas were tradition-based and flowed effortlessly in a singing fashion. IMHO one of the best around! Frank Hamilton |

Subject: RE: kelly joe phelps fans? From: black walnut Date: 09 Sep 99 - 10:53 AM wonderful to read your comments...i see i'm not alone! there are a few musicians who are top~of~the~ladder, and i'd have to put kelly joe right up there. his voice is like velvet, his slide playing effortless and elegant. his passion for the music is contagious. i love his liner notes on 'Roll Away the Stone': "Dad used to stomp his foot damn near through the floor punching out piano music he learned as a kid becoming the music I heard as a kid. I've watched mine sit slack-jawed watching him weave magic and realize over and again the amazing strength of music. A straight line string running up down through and around. I could've said (sometime back) you can't see it - can be felt and heard, you are moved by and move with it - but now you and I can see colors (red flies across an orange-purple sky, white squares with green shadows flip-flop in a blue box inside painted yellow outside set on a black floor) so we can see music with other eyes. These see what coffee tasted like, what a handshake feels like. Opening a can of beans with a jack-knife and eating them with the blade or listening to Doc Watson. Music serves a grand function in this crazy old world, and all of us, one way or another, are singers. Let your song fly. The rest of us need it. -kjp" |

Subject: RE: kelly joe phelps fans? From: black walnut Date: 29 Sep 99 - 01:23 PM well, kelly joe phelps played in toronto last night. four of us went, including tony burns (see above, sept.8). fortunately we got there early enough to grab a table together....the place was packed. i could say that the show was wonderful, fabulous, astounding, amazing, and all those other good things, but the words seem lame. it was atonishingly perfect...this guy is top of the ladder. my friend with the convertable (see above, sept.8), a great slide player himself, said last night that phelps does the blues so, so well, but he also does so much more than the blues. phelps dives into the music with his clothes on, and i was transported to a different dimension. he is authentic, driven, and genius. what a night. ~black walnut

Subject: RE: kelly joe phelps fans? From: Aida Date: 30 Sep 99 - 10:52 AM I have to echo black walnut's comments; I too was there in the audience for the Toronto gig but was transported to some other dimension. This is a man with impeccable musicality; he digs deep, crawls right inside the music and goes where it takes him. |

Subject: RE: kelly joe phelps fans? From: black walnut Date: 19 Oct 05 - 10:29 AM I heard Kelly Joe again last night, at Hugh's Room. Just Kelly JOe and his guitar. What Aida said above is still so very true. He did an amazing concert...I've never heard anybody who knows his guitar as well as he does. He and his guitar are one person. He talks with it. He sings with it. He is it. He had the audience in his hands. We were melted butter. Colin Linden and Birnie Finkelstein were in the audience...his most recent CD is on the True North label. A great Canadian label. ~b.w. |

Tim has a song on his traveller recording dedicated to a pair of shoes that kelly gave him...he mentions that he wore these to Chico-it is in the song. he teaches 3 homespun lessons http://www.homespuntapes.com/artists/artistpage.asp?artID=430 here is his web page http://www.kellyjoephelps.net/index.htm |

Subject: RE: kelly joe phelps fans? From: black walnut Date: 23 Oct 05 - 01:19 PM His CD's don't do him justice, inmo. I love them all - I'm not saying I don't - they put me into a very happy satisfied and calm state of mind. But when you see KJP live, you appreciate him as the extrodinarly talented musician that he is. Which is why he's in cahoots with the likes of Tim O'Brien. ~b.w. |

Subject: RE: kelly joe phelps fans? From: Hamish Date: 23 Oct 05 - 05:08 PM Don't rub it in! Yes, I'm a huge fan. Imagine my excitement and delight at seeing he's playing The Jazz Cafe in London in November... ...imagine my, er, disappointment to find that there's a parents' night at my daughter's school. Three line whip: I gotta go to the school thing... ~8^/ |

Subject: RE: kelly joe phelps fans? From: black walnut Date: 24 Oct 05 - 11:12 AM Oh woe! Can you possibly do both??? Kelly Joe likes to play late at night. At our concert there was a fairly long opening act, and KJP didn't start until after well your daughter's bedtime (I'm assuming). ~b.w. |

Subject: RE: kelly joe phelps fans? From: GUEST,Scoville on lunch break Date: 24 Oct 05 - 04:03 PM I hardly know his stuff any more. I heard him live when I was at school in April, 1998, and loved him, but I haven't heard what he's doing now. I've about played Roll Away the Stone to death, if that were possible with a CD. It never occurred to me to play the Doxology on slide guitar but it works. I really need to keep better track of my favorite musicians. |

Subject: RE: kelly joe phelps fans? From: black walnut Date: 24 Oct 05 - 10:17 PM Roll Away the Stone - I love that recording! When the roll is called up yonder....and yes, the Doxology is brilliant. ~b.w. |

Subject: RE: kelly joe phelps fans? From: GUEST,Hamish Date: 15 Nov 05 - 05:25 AM Woo-hoo! I've got my tickets for next week. ~8^) We managed to get an early slot on the parents' evening at school, and will be able to be in London, oh, soon enough. (Although it'll cost a fortune in baby-sitting costs. Worth every penny, as I will tell you all about late next week...) -- Hamish |

Subject: RE: kelly joe phelps fans? From: black walnut Date: 18 Nov 05 - 07:13 PM Yes, do report back, Hamish, please. What is that venue like? Look at KJP's tour schedule - it's crazy. He jumps continents and time zones like a fiend. Well, enjoy! ~b.w. |

Subject: RE: kelly joe phelps fans? From: rangeroger Date: 03 Dec 05 - 03:30 PM First heard Kelly-Joe in the early 90's while working at Silver Mountain Ski Resort. Steven Stills was the headliner for one of our Summer Concerts. The lead in band, Too Slim and the Tail Draggers, canceled but Recommended KJP. I was wandering about by the mountain house when I heard beautiful slide guitar coming from a sound check in the amphitheater. When I went to see who it was, there was Kelly-joe with an old Gibson flat-top on his lap playing astounding music. Got to talk to him after the concert and got a promo kit from him ( with an extra tape for myself).Sent it to Charlie Cran at Strawberry Music. We finally booked him for the Festival where he pt on an amazing show. Had a chance for a long talk with him there, and found him to be very personable. He is also a very spiritual person and it really reflects in his music. rr |

Subject: RE: kelly joe phelps fans? From: Hamish Date: 04 Dec 05 - 05:58 AM Sorry, BW: here 'tis: Kelly Joe was fantastic. Just played solo with no tricks or effects: just his amazing guitar technique, voice and soul. He is so wound up when he plays: he can't stay still and contorts his body and writhes around the whole time. However, the gig was less than brilliant, because it's a diabolical venue (IMHO). Standing room only: and not a floor you'd want to sit on, so after 3+ hours my old creaking bones were starting to object. Plus, it's a low stage, so with Kelly, who plays sitting down on a low chair, unless a vertically-challenged chap like me (or chapess like my wife) is in the front, you wouldn't be able to see more than the top of his head. And as for the toilets: worse than any I've experienced in many a decade. I thought it was meant to be a prestigious venue, but I won't ever be going back there. But, the gig was worth while nevertheless. Most of KJP's stuff was, I think, from his new album, but he did a couple from Sling Shot Profesionals, too. The sound was actually pretty good, too, and he has such a presence. Awesome! -- Hamish |

Subject: RE: kelly joe phelps fans? From: black walnut Date: 04 Dec 05 - 05:01 PM Thanks both! Glad that you could say still say 'awesome' at the end of a bone~bruising concert, Hamish! Roger, I'm glad to hear he's personable...it's something you hope for but you don't know for sure from the audience. He's a lot like Cockburn then, a loner in a group, but wonderful to talk with one on one? ~b.w. |
