I hope this isn't a question that's already been answered, but does anyone have link to a database with 16th century folk songs? I am especially interested in songs from Ireland, England, Scotland - early 1500's.

Try Cantoria - or the pre-1600 ballad project. sorry, don't have the URLs handy - but a quick web search should find them for you.

try Chappell [William?]--title something like "a garland of ancient music"--I think Dover Reprinted it in the '60's. HAve you tried a historic recreation group?

Are you in fact looking for folk music? Much of the available music is art music from that period. Can you please be more specific as to the kind of song you are interested in? The music handed down by the troubadors and art singer/songwriters of that period may or may not have folk roots.

frank - as I have begun exploring the links posted by Mario, I have already learned that I am not looking for 'folk' music, really. I am interested in ballads. I am interested in learning what the lyrics of the day were about ... and I have begun to find this is a big subject! Still I am enjoying the search!

Liam...for perhaps the best link on the net, go to this site for Bruce Olson's ballad and early folk song index...(he may be lurking around here anyway...post specific requests if you have them..)
