Subject: Lyr Add: A Oganaigh Oig - A Ógánaigh Óig From: Philippa Date: 26 Aug 99 - 04:38 PM Jim, I'm posting these lyrics in response to your request. Do you think this is the same song you heard? I had hoped I might get out of doing the typing, if I could find a link elsewhere on the web. Well, I did a quick Altavista search and all I came up with was a song or tune by this title is on Bill Whelan's soundtrack for "Some Mother's Son". I saw that film about prisoners on hunger strike, but I have no memory of the soundtrack. Whelan is better known in connection with Riverdance. Perhaps PJ Curtis would have information.
A Ógánaigh Óig - Song of south Ulster origin, author unknown but some say it was Cathal Bhuí Mhic Giolla Gunna (16??-1756), composer of An Bonnan Buíí. I'd like to think a woman wrote the lyrics. The words are published in Amhráin Chúige Uladh, compiled by Colm Ó Baoill. Pádraigín Ní Uallacháin composed her own air for the song and recorded it on "An Dara Craiceann"
Young man, if you'd walk the road with me
I am a young girl out in the darkness
Did you say to me, young man,
If I but knew how to make sweet music |

Subject: RE: Lyr Add: A Ógánaigh Óig From: Annraoi Date: 27 Aug 99 - 04:36 PM a Phillipa, Tá áthas orm 'fheiceáil gi bhfuil tú arais ar do shean-léim arís. Ach anois go bhfuil ríomhaire de do chuid féin agat, ní fios cá rachaidh muid. An bhfuil tú cinnte gurb é Colm Ó Baoill a d'fhoillsigh an chnuasacht? |

Subject: RE: Lyr Add: A Ógánaigh Óig From: Philippa Date: 04 Sep 99 - 07:32 PM Colm Ó Baoill was responsible for the new edition of the original 1927/1937 collection by Muirideach ó Meith, Father Lorcan Ó Muirigh. There are other songs beginning with the words, A Ógánaigh Óig. Could Jim get back to us and confirm whether the lyrics given above are likely to be the ones he heard? |

Subject: RE: Lyr Add: A Ógánaigh Óig From: Philippa Date: 05 Sep 99 - 06:17 AM These lyrics are Pádraigín Ní Uallacháin's version, which is an adaptation and abridgement of the text given in the book "Amhrán Chúige Uladh" compiled by Father Lorcan O Muireadhaigh ("Muireadach Méite) and originally published in two volumes, 1927/1937. In 1977, Sairseal-O Marcaigh publishers, Dublin, issued a new edition edited by Colm O Baoill. The O Muireadhaigh version includes verses collected from two women: Bean uí Bhrannagáin of Dundalk, Co Louth and Bean uí Bhibinigh of Omeath. The song has also been found in counties Tyrone and Fermanagh and a version is published in Éinrí O Muirgheasa's "Dhá Chéad de Cheoltaibh Uladh". The second half of the first verse as sung by Pádraigín is found in the latter publication. The O Muireadhaigh version includes verses from the man's point of view, which Pádraigín doesn't sing |
