Does anyone know of any good traditional sessions in the Boston area on the weekends? (Please, not just a newspaper listing--real experience or hearsay.) I may be in the area, and am curious about what's around. Thanks.

Yup, there are a number of sessions on the weekends, I'm guessing you're looking at Irish, there are old timey & bluegrass & singing too, let me know & give me a day of 2 to give you more detailed info. When will you be in the area & who might you be & where are you from & what do you play/sing/listen? All those are optional. Barry

I may be in the area one of the last two weekends in September. I'm from Brewster, New York (45 miles north of NYC), but it's not me who plays. It's a friend, who I'm trying to convince to accompany me. She plays the guitar and fiddle and sings. I sing a little, too. She knows more American and British folk and traditional music, but we've been trying to learn more Irish songs, as there's a (real low-key) session in our area. We've been making little forays out to other sessions, so I thought this would be a good enticement. Thanks.

Sorry, I had to look it up on the map to be sure. Yes, Pomfret, CT. The Northeast Kingdom, is that what its called (or is that Vermont)? Never been there. A hoot is a thought. I love driving and CT is not really that big. Jeez, when we were in Ireland last year, I put 2000 miles on the rental car in 10 days. Yahoo! Anyway, tell me more Tiger…

Tiger, M and friend, and Guy--

Count VicTim in for a jam!

I'm not available on Tuesday nights, and we've got gigs booked for 17 September (evening) and 18 September (afternoon). However, on 24 September VicTim hosts an open mic at the college where I work, so that might be a fun time to get together. The students really liked it when we did Mairi's Wedding and The Ash Grove and Red Haired Boy. The college is in Norwich, about 5 minutes off I-395. Pomfret is also fine, if Tiger wants to volunteer a venue!

Tim plays fiddle too, and we do a bunch of old timey/trad things with recorder, fiddle, pennywhistle, et cetera.

Speaking of venues......

Well, of course, there's Lake Butts, right here in Pomfret. As lakes go, it's a little small (only 20x40) but it's clean as a whistle, and there's no rocks or seaweed.

Seriously, we'll probably have to cover it up after this weekend, 'cause once it gets below 70 degrees, you have to be pretty inspired to jump in.

How about an informal swim and guitar pull and general hoot this Sunday, the 29th. at my place. I'd love to have all you guys over, plus any others in reach of NE Connecticut.

M (2 hours away) - bring voice, friend, fiddle, etc.
Guy (maybe 2:10, via Rt 67 to I-84) - bring all that stuff.
Victim - you guys could walk it.

Anybody else - Boston (1 hr, 20 min), Nashua (1 hr, 40 min), Keene (2hr, 10 min)? Get aboard!

If we can drum up some interest, I'll get busy on setting up some directions.

Bathing suits, recording equipment, CDs, blank tapes, malt beverages could all get a workout.

Whaddya say?......Tiger

Hi, Tir Na Nog is in Somerville & I don't believe they have a session going any more. Matt Murphy's is in Brookline, don't know what eve they have a session but also in Brookline is O'Leary's & I they have a Sunday session, the Druid in Cambridge or Somerville has a Fri eve session, the Green Dragon has a Sun afternoon session downtown Boston, the Brendan Behan in Jamaica Plain used to have a Sun session don't know if that's still going on, the Burren has sessions nightly but they're not so warm & friendly. Really the Boston Globe has a calender section (I know there was mention of no newspaper references) that's very up on folk (thanks to folk musician/singer & globe coloumnist Scott Alrick-sp?) that comes out every Thrusday with great music listings I think you can get it off the inernet by searching Boston Globe. WHen will you be out this way, I'll see if I can dig up more. Barry

Hi, The session at the Brendan Behan, in Jamaica Plain, takes place Saturdays from five to eight. Second-hand word says it's possible to sit in, and the Behan is a great small pub.

There is music every night at the Burren (dancing 8-10 on Modays), in Davis Square in Somerville, but good luck sitting in.

A session takes place every Sunday in South Eason, MA (about 1/2 hour south of Boston or north of Providence), on Rt 138 1/4 mile up from junction with 106. A lot of singing there, but on any given night, plenty of tunes too. The owner sits in to sing, and what is supposed to last from five to eight could run all night. Literally. Lots of big names in Irish and folk music have played the Blackthorne--suprising for a place out of the city. Some have sit in. In fact, the Blackthorne fits under the other thread for favorite pubs: very friendly, tons of beers, enthusiastic owner.

Some good sessions weeknights out of the city too, in Quincy. Hope this helps.

Hi Sean, anymore info on that session in South Easton, I've heard recently that a Sunday afternoon singing session was going on thereabouts, run by an old buddy Bridget Fitzgerald & I figured if I was ever free to make it I'd love to go. Can you shed any more light on this?

Also first hand info on that Brendan Behan session, if it's still the same people (no reason to think otherwise) it's a very friendly & welcoming session.
Barry

Hi Barry, The session at the Blackthorne in south Easton isn't run by Bridget, although she is there quite often, when she isn't off at a festival, etc. I'll say hello if you like. It was never officially a singing session. However, when we started we didn't really know many available melody instrument players, so by default the first year (@97) we sang a lot! Especially with the owner, John O'Connor there, who absolutely loves the session and knows practically every lyric there is. (He's even finagled his way into doing impromptu spots with musicians on concert nights, i.e., the Clancys, Fairport Convention, Robbie O'Connell.)

So, absolutely there is always singing. However, most nights there are many tunes as well. We regularly might have some combo of pipes, fiddle, whistle, banjo, mandolin, guitar. The piper comes every other week, and there is a session every single week, no matter what. Some beginners, some intermediate, and a monster here and there (the piper!)

Sorry, sorry, Tiger, Vixen and all, to miss the do. I am only online at work. Thursday was the Big Flood…I spent 3 hours on the train, only to make a roundtrip to White Plains and home. Could not make it into the city, but then, neither could anyone else. I promise I will be more diligent in the future. Sounds like a wonderful time (sigh). Please keep me posted on future hoots.

Guy, I will definitely try to make it up to your shop! (Without looking at the map first) are you in Kent? Farther north? I'll find it.

Barry and Sean, thanks so much for the info. What ammunition I have! To hell with the original intention of the Boston trip, we'll just come up to play!

there is the New England Folk Festival coming up next month...
seems like the singers' sessiun would be a good place for her to wet her feet since everyone who participates gets to perform one at a time so there is always a focus on who is singing...
the Irish sessiuns are mainly instrumental and many of them not all that open to new people (especially women) (and American)...not true across the boards, depends where you go...a good player is always welcomed eventually but it may take a while...
