I've lost a verse from the KC Moan. Anyone find it? Does anyone know it? I did do a search. Thanks Paul

If you're interested in a recorded version, it's performed on "Before The Blues, Vol. 2" by the Memphis Jug Band.

I'm looking for the lyrics too. This is what I have so far -

"I thought I heard that KC when she moaned" X3
"She moans like my womans on board"

"When I get back on that KC road" X3
"I'll love that girl, like she's never done before"

From what I've heard of the melody it's a first cousin to "Going down that road feeling bad" and I can substitute lyrics if I have to - but I was hoping someone else had some they could offer. Thanks

K. C. Moan
as recorded by The Memphis Jug Band, in 1929

You can hear it on CD on:
- The Memphis Jug Band, double album - 23 songs! - Yazoo 1067;
- Anthology of American Folk Music Volume 3: songs, edited by Harry Smith; Folkways FP 253;
- Before the Blues, the early American Black Music scene as captured on classic recordings from the 1920s and 302, Vol.2, Yazoo 2016

I tho't I heard that K. C. when she blow
Oh, I tho't I heard that K. C. when she blow
Oh, I tho't I heard that K. C. when she blow
She blow like my woman's on board

When I get back on that K. C. road
Oh, when I get back on that K. C. road
Oh, when I get back on that K. C. road
Gonna love my baby like I never loved before

Mmm, mmm, mmm, mmm, mmm
Mmm, mmm, mmm, mmm, mmm
Mmm, mmm, mmm, mmm, mmm
Mmm, mmm, mmm, mmm, mmm

Lyrics & sheet music of the Memphis Jug Band version are at Anthology of American Folk Music (pp. 102-103: " K.C. Moan"). The Grateful Dead version (lyrics) is here.

I'm almost positive that this was recorded by the Kweskin Jug Band as well. In fact, I'd be willing to bet that Bobby Weir, like myself, learned the song (or at least first heard it) from that Vanguard LP.

Sure wish I still had that record!

I may still have the Kweskin version but I heard it recently on the first John Sebastian and the J band CD.

As a Kansas City (KC)resident, I need to know what the KC is.

There was railroad here called the KT or Katie (Missouri-Kansas-Texas), but not the KC.

The Katie has been subsumed into larger railroads, but the Katie bike trail remains to remind us.
