Two album titles really stick out in my mind as being great;

"Out Standing in Their Field" - New Lost City Ramblers

"Raised by Humans" - Spider John Koerner

I'm sure the other folk on the Mudcat have their favorite titles, also.

CarlZen..chill out... I would'nt even pick two..More like twenty two..Folk music..Paul Brady & Paul Irvine, Delores Keane (Many Albums), Christy Moore...etc.I play with a group as a Traditional Irish Whistle and flute player, but will also rip the backside out of many an Irish Folk song on guitar. Although classed as a Traditional musician I dispute the term.. It's still folk music. I will sit and play in session's on whistle and flute, then again, lift the guiter and sing many a song. Albums from the The Bothy Band, Paddy Keenan , Matt Molly , Four Men & a Dog stick out. Such albums arn't like a Boyzone Album or even an Elvis Album. These albums inspire people to music. And at 33, having bought most of them from the early years of 15-16 and onwards still to this day listen..find inspiration and still find bits of tunes that I hav'nt mastered. Irish folk & traditional music exploded, like many other sectors of folk music, with the introduction of recorded sound, many a fine album has been produced and listened to day in and day out, until a song or tune was learnt,and when it was learnt the album (and the tradition) was held in that special place the listeners memory. Personally , from 'Willie Clancy' the piper from Milton Malby, being recorded on bits of thinned out metal,long before plastic recording was even thought, of to modern groups like Altan and Four Men & a Dog such albums are Landmarks.

Folk/Traditional music by its nature does'nt produce albums like the modern music culture. Not only can it represent the current day but more than often it is a reflection of our past. Modern groups can do cover versions of songs that were played ten or twenty years ago..but think of the feeling I get when I listen to a recording of Seamus Ennis 50 years ago and can still learn a tune from it... Folk music is unique.. you could listen to an album that has'nt got much worth, copy a song or tune on it and then turn it into something good. So you put it unto an album yourself and then somebody says ..What an Album !!. So that album becomes something.

Reverting to the initial album ....Be it good or bad, it will always stick in your mind, and if you learn one..two ..three things from it..your quids in.

Theres no such thing as a bad 'Folk' album, just somebody doing something in a way you dont like..Christ I'm off for a coffee !!!

Slainte

WHOA WHOA !!!!!!!!

I guess I needed to explain my thread a little better. I'm not looking for STILL ANOTHER list of favorite folk albums. At 50 and still buying the things I wouldn't know where to begin or end to choose a "top" album. That's why I didn't put in any response to the other threads looking for lists like that (I do read the other threads, CTWB.)

What I'm looking for are interesting and unique TITLES of folk albums. The two I mentioned were there because of the humor and play of language (also how they work with their cover art as in the NLCR all standing in a field). "Raised By Humans" as a title still tickles me after the 5 or so years it has been out.

Most CDs (as they should) stand alone on their music. But occasionally someone comes along with a little creative twist. I just thought it would be interesting to get perspective on that one tiny, wee, little aspect of the production of all of this wonderful music that brings out such passion in us all.

Careful with that coffee. The caffeine can bring out siome aggressive stuff.

I always liked "Ten Man Mop" { Am I remembering that one right gang}. By the way Do you think all the original members of "Steel Eyed Span" had grey eyes. I was just wandering. Do The Incredable String band count as "Folk Album"{?} "The Hangmans Lovley Daughter" always got me as did " THe ?,000 Layers of the Onion".I also liked "Into the Perple Valley" by Ry Cooder but with aplogese I don't think any of these are EXACTLY folk albums but what the HECK... ALL my best to all>>>>GUY >>>>><<<<<>>><<<>>><<<<>>>
