Subject: Lyr Add: THE OLD MAN (Phil Coulter)^^
From: Tiger
Date: 21 Jul 99 - 01:47 PM

You guys are right, this is almost impossible for me to sing. I recently sent this as a condolence to someone who had just lost his Dad. It's hard to believe the gratitude.

......Tiger

The Old Man
Words and music by Phil Coulter
Performed by John McDermott on his Old Friends CD and Irish Tenors video/CD

The tears have all been shed now,
We've said our last good-byes.
His soul's been blessed,
He's laid to rest,
And it's now I feel alone.
He was more than just a father,
A teacher, my best friend.
He can still be heard
In the tunes we shared,
When we play them on our own.

    CHORUS
    I never will forget him,
For he made me "what I am."
    Though he may be gone,
    Memories linger on,
And I miss him, the old man.

As a boy, he'd take me walking
By mountain field and stream,
And he showed me things
Not known to kings,
And secret between him and me,
Like the colors of the pheasant,
As he rises in the dawn,
And how to fish and make a wish,
Beside the holly tree.

    CHORUS

I thought he'd live forever,
He seemed so big and strong,
But the minutes fly,
And the years roll by,
For a father and a son,
And suddenly, when it happened,
There was so much left unsaid,
No second chance,
To tell him thanks,
For everything he's done.

    CHORUS^^

Seems an inexhaustible subject! Both Ewan macColl and Steve Goodman have written songs titled 'My Old Man', in the same vein as Phil Coulter. I think Ewan's is in the DT, but Steve's isn't. I'll post it when I get round to it. - Susanne

But MacColl's "My old man" is anything but sad . . much more "coming up fighting". It's a pity it's a little twee in its new technology images; it's almost a great song (IMO).

There are three 'My Old Men' in the DT, but not this Steve Goodman song. I haven't heard the original, but this is the way Iain MacKintosh sings it (not very often, he admits):

I miss the old man tonight; I wish he was here with me.
With his corny jokes and his cheap cigar
He could look you in the eye and sell you a car
That's not an easy thing to do
But no one ever knew
a finer man in all this land
Than my old man

He never talked about his war, in France when he was eighteen
The day they put him in a trench was the day he learnt sense
And he never again used violence
He got out of uniform
Came home and married mum, and not so very long after that
He was my old man

I remember the fights we had, my sisters and I got him mad
He'd get all boiled up, he'd sometimes shout
We knew what was coming so we tuned him out
Now the old man's gone
I'd give all I own to know what he said when I wasn't listening
To my old man

I miss the old man tonight, I can almost see his face
He was always trying to watch his weight
But his heart only made it to fifty-eight
For the first time since he died
Late last night I cried
I wondered when I was going to do that
For my old man ^^

Looks like Iain MacKintosh may have adapted the song to fit a more personal situation to him. I understand, I did the same thing about 10+ years ago. I put my version on a cassette that I sent out to friends and relatives. It was hard enough to record and I never have sung it live in public. here are the Steve Goodman lyrics as printed on the album sleeve of his "Say It In Private" album. I think Steve once did it live on Austin City Limits.

MY OLD MAN
(Steve Goodman, 1977 Big Ear Music & Red Pajamas Music)

I miss my old man tonight
And I wish he was here with me
With his corny jokes and his cheap cigars
He could look you in the eye and sell you a car.
That's not an easy thing to do,
But no one ever knew
A more charming creature on this earth
Than my old man.

He was a pilot in the big war In the U.S. Army Air Corps
In a C-47 with a heavy load
Full of combat cargo for the Burma Road.
And after they dropped the bomb
He came home and married Mom
And not long after that
He was my old man.

And oh the fights we had
When my brother and I got him mad;
He'd get all boiled up and he'd start to shout
And I knew what was coming so I tuned him out.
And now the old man's gone,
And I'd give all I own
To hear what he said when I wasn't listening
To my old man.

I miss my old man tonight
I can almost see his face
He was always trying to watch his weight
And his heart only made to fifty-eight.
And for the first time since he died
Late last night I cried.
I wondered when I was gonna do that
For my old man.

Gee, I don't think I could sing any of these - I'd get too choked up. My old man taught me to love singing. He's almost 80, and his voice is still strong and clear. I don't get much chance to sing with him any more, but it's still a pleasure to stand next to him in church and sing with him.

Good man, Joe. A great sentiment. As I told you all in an earlier thread on this song, I sang it for the members of my band, three of whom have lost their fathers. All were given the gift of music by these fine men. Even though my Da is still alive, the imagery this song evokes and the knowledge that I will lost him someday makes it a very hard song to sing. For those that would like to read that thread, CLICK HERE

Joe, if you would like, I will sing this for you at the Getaway.

All the best,

Big Mick

Mick, please do sing that one for me. I think I'll really like it. a couple of others I really like are Leader of the Band by Dan Fogelberg, and The LivinG Years, which was performed by Mike and the Mechanics. Both are powerful songs.

Thanks to Joe for putting in a link to this thread from one about John Denver's (Jerry Jeff Walker's) song. And thanks to Tiger for posting the Phil Coulter song. I didn't know it, but I'm going to learn it. There's a wonderful song by Tom Hodge from Bellingham, Wash., the last two lines of the chorus are

It never much mattered what songs they might be
Cause my daddy was singing with me

I have it on tape somewhere; I don't know if Tom or anyone else ever recorded it, but it's worth hearing.
My dad died eight years ago at 64. A few years before that, when he was living in Philadelphia and I was in Seattle, I wrote a song that I was surprised to find in the DT, called When My Father Called. When I read the words now I find them a little confusing; I guess because it's both about my father and also his father, who died in 1945 when my Dad was 19. I was able to sort out a lot of unfinished business with my Dad before he died, for which I'm grateful, but I never got to talk with him very much about his father, and I wish I had. I know he and my grandmother were born in or near Kiev, in the Ukraine. I do remember hearing one good story: There was a family wedding in Philadelphia in the 30's, when times were very hard. My grandfather gave the couple a gift of $5. He was a tailor, and was about the least well off of all the cousins -- but he was the only one to bring a gift.
Thanks, everyone, for reminding me of all these wonderful songs.

Aloha,
Mark Cohen

There don't seem to be many songs in this vein, but Phil Coulter's marvelous contribution gets me all teary eyed.

After all those sentimental songs it seems iconoclastic for me to remember this one: My mother takes in washing And so does sister Ann Everybody works at our house But My Old Man.

Sorry gang!

Of course there's "Oh, my papa! To me he was so wonderful...Oh, my papa! so funny in his way..." one of Eddie Fisher's (Fischer?) hits. Wonder what's become of Eddie?

HERE'S ANOTHER "OLD MAN " SONG

The Old Man
Words and music by H. Bolton

Don't look at me like that, young man
Don't look at me that way
I know you see an old man now
An old man bent and grey
Once I was straight and tall, young man
So straight and tall and strong
But now the years have taken toll
And I have lived too long

For life's been hard on me , young man
I started work at forteen years
Straight down the pit for me, young man
The dirt, the damp, the sweat, the tears
When war broke out I left the pit
And joined the army and the fight
It mattered little where I died
Below in darkness - up in light

But I survived the war, young man
With all it's slaughter death and pain
No better life for me, young man
Just down that dark dank hole again
No choice of job for me, young man
With family and bills to pay
So for another twenty years
I fought that coal face every day

And then me lungs gave out, young man
Choked by the damp dust of the mine
A wheezing, coughing, broken man
Crawled to the surface one last time
They say the good die young, young man
Well, my sins must have been too great
For though at times I wished for death
All I could do was sit and wait

And so I sat and sat, young man
Sat by my window every day
My wife went out to work, young man
My family grew and moved away
But I just sat and sat, young man
Trapped inside my infirmity
Watched family and old friends die
And wondered why it wasn't me

And as I sat and watched, young man
The world took on a different face
Where young, like you, they have no time
Where old, like me, they have no place
So when you look at me, young man
Don't see this broken empty shell
See all the things I've seen and done
Hear all the tales I have to tell

Written in memory of my grandfather. An amazing man who, through sheer guts and determination, lived till he was 88.

Good work, Nutty. I've always been fond of Si Kahn's "New Wood" or as it's more commonly known "Gone, Gonna Rise Again." My father's still around at 97; he hates the fuss and bother of birthdays and Father's Day but we send him cards anyhow!

Well my feelings about this song are well documented in other threads.
We do this in my band. At least it has interesting chords.

The best My Old Man song I have ever heard was by Jerry Jeff Walker.
Affectionate with out getting over ripe or maudlin.
