THIS OLE HOUSE
(recorded by Rosemary Clooney)
- words and music by Stuart Hamblen

This ole house once knew his children
This ole house once knew his wife
This ole house was home and comfort
As they fought the storms of life
This old house once rang with laughter
This old house heard many shouts
Now he trembles in the darkness
When the lightnin' walks about
CHORUS:
Ain't a-gonna need this house no longer
Ain't a-gonna need this house no more
Ain't got time to fix the shingles
Ain't got time to fix the floor
Ain't got time to oil the hinges
Nor to mend the windowpane
Ain't a-gonna need this house no longer
He's a-gettin' ready to meet the saints

This ole house is a-gettin' shaky
This ole house is a-gettin' old
This ole house lets in the rain
This ole house lets in the cold
On his knees I'm gettin' chilly
But he feel no fear nor pain
'Cause he see an angel peekin'
Through a broken windowpane
CHORUS

This ole house is afraid of thunder
This ole house is afraid of storms
This ole house just groans and trembles
When the night wind flings its arms
This ole house is gettin' feeble
This old house is needin' paint
Just like him it's tuckered out
But he's a-gettin' ready to meet the saints
CHORUS

This ole house dog lies a-sleepin'
He don't know I'm gonna leave
Else he'd wake up by the fireplace
And he'd sit there and howl and grieve
But my huntin' days are over
Ain't gonna hunt the coon no more
Gabriel done brought in my chariot
When the wind blew down the door
CHORUS

Darn. You try to be nice, and things get away from you. We have too much information about this song, and it doesn't make sense to repeat it. Best for you to do a Forum Search (click here) for shwanee in the subject title, and you'll find all we've got. We like to help, but we get grumpy if you don't search our forum and database first. If you can't find a song after that, start a new thread with a specific title (like the name of the song) in the thread title. We tend to go ballistic over generic thread titles like "Lookin for a song"

Joe, look what a temper does to the typing. If the former thread was called "...Swhanee..." , it would be hard to find in a forum search! I checked this out anyway; the thread has the spelling "Shawnee" so it could be located okay. Still, it isn't always so easy to locate songs by forum search (I recently nearly messed up searches by creating a thread called 'Politian speak', but I corrected the spelling to 'Politician...' in the message title.) People should search the DT database, of course, but as several of us have pointed out it would be helpful if the screen had a notice advising people to search the DT before starting new threads. Also, someone pointed out and I had to agree, that people who ask for songs already on the DT make a contribution in drawing our attention to songs we might not have noticed or might have forgotten about.
I consider the use of terribly general "looking for a song" thread titles as a far greater problem, because the thread is liable to become a dumping ground, a muddle of requests for many songs with response to the various requests all jumbled. We see the phenomena starting to happen again in this thread.
I don't know if I'm wise writing on this thread rather than (hopefully!!) allowing it to die. Please folks, if you're looking for lyrics to a song, start another thread with a better title. Don't add it to this thread!>

Joe's not cross because of the heat, it's the stupidity that's makin' him sweat.

"it's the stupidity that's makin' him sweat." Interesting thought, but I'm stupid and I don't sweat! Maybe ifn' I weren't so stupid I'd figure out how, huh? (TIC,NOI, etc.)

Subject: Generic thread titles - big no-no
From: Joe Offer

Actually, usually the only time that stupidity makes me sweat is when it's my own stupidity. Ever get that feeling? You know, the mixture of shame and embarrassment that you get when you figure out you really blew it.
This time, I was trying to be firm and cut off the proliferation of generic thread names before it became epidemic. Things have been real quiet lately, and then a bunch of generically-titled song requests came up all at once.
In some ways, I've given up and have started another tack. You might notice that I have sometimes changed the subject title of messages that contain lyrics (you can do this yourself at the time you're submitting a post). I hope nobody minds - it seemed to me that it should help us find songs that have already been posted. the "body" part of the forum search isn't working, but the "subject" search still works very well. If I change the subject title, the thread title stays the same, so I don't think my title-changing should cause confusion.

A midi file anyone?

I remember this song sung by a male voice in the 1950's or early 60's.

A thread title change might help too..

There's at least two songs with the title, "This Old House," that I know of. The old Rosemary Clooney one Joe posted, and one by the Rice Brothers recorded in the '80s, sometime, which is considerably prettier.

This fact often causes considerable confusion and argument in Country and Bluegrass music cirles.

Peter.

At the risk of getting chastised in Red Ink or being found guilty of ETD (extreme thread drift), I just know somebody else beside me is going to open this thread and expect it to be about the theme music from the long running PBS television series, "This Old House".

In case you wondered, as I did, that song is really called Louisiana Fairy Tale and was recorded by guitarist Guy Van Duser and clarinetist Billy Novick on the CD "Guy and Billy". Definitely tasty stuff, and that's no April Fools.
