Subject: oboe question (not folk, not BS) From: Alice Date: 06 Jul 99 - 10:36 AM I have a friend who needs to sell an oboe to help pay medical bills. I have tried to help her with the task of putting it on consignment in a larger town, but in a year, it has not sold. It is an excellent quality oboe at a sacrifice price. I've tried posting to woodwind email lists, websites, etc, but no luck. Pardon this non-folk/blues question, but does anyone have other suggestions or know an oboe teacher, school.... anything that could help sell this oboe? |

Subject: RE: oboe question (not folk, not BS) From: Uilleand Date: 06 Jul 99 - 11:38 AM You could try the American Symphony Orchestra League (ASOL) or the American Federation of Musicians (AFofM). The league has a newsletter and a website (www.symphony.org)as well. The AFofM is the national musicians union (www.afm.org). The union has a list of their locals on the website. You could check with your local to see where you can post ads for the oboe. |

Subject: RE: oboe question (not folk, not BS) From: Steve I Date: 06 Jul 99 - 12:24 PM How about e-bay dot com. (don't know how to do the clicky thing) They always seem to have a bunch of instruments for sale. |

Subject: RE: oboe question (not folk, not BS) From: Alice Date: 06 Jul 99 - 03:08 PM Thanks, everyone, it was already sent to a music store in a larger town and put on consignement, so it would cost her too much to have it shipped back and then try to sell it at an e-auction.
There is one oboe teacher in this area who also tried to sell it for her, but it is an expensive new instrument, and most students lease oboes for lessons.
The owner of the oboe is a member of American Guild of Musical Artists, New York, American Federation of Musicians - Local 709, Montana State Music Teachers Association, Music Teachers National Association, no help there (thanks anyway, Uilleand).
The instrument is a Renard protege oboe, model 333, with case, like new condition, $1375 + shipping (very discounted price). Thanks for bearing with my plea for help. When it gets down to having to sell one's musical instruments, the situation is tough indeed.

Subject: RE: oboe question (not folk, not BS) From: Bert Date: 06 Jul 99 - 03:20 PM I must disagree with your thread title about "not folk". There is a Bahraini instrument called a "Habban" which is recognizable as an oboe. The only difference is that they use circular breathing when playing it. So it IS folk related. Bert. |

Subject: RE: oboe question (not folk, not BS) From: Alice Date: 06 Jul 99 - 08:21 PM Well, then, Bert, how many folk musicians can you name who play oboe? Maybe that should be how many Belgian folk musicians can you name who play oboe? This has been an interesting quest in trying to find an oboe buyer. I didn't expect it would be this difficult. Steve I, on e-bay's list of instruments, I did find some oboes listed, and many instruments were being sold on e-bay by music stores. One oboe was more rare and higher priced than the one my friend is selling. I am going to suggest to the music store that they try selling some of their consignments through e-bay. There is a youngster on their staff who handles the email, and she may be up for doing a new project for her employer. I think it's the only way they are going to move some of the less popular instruments. |

Subject: RE: oboe question (not folk, not BS) From: Charlie Baum Date: 11 Jul 99 - 12:03 AM Actually, at the recent Smithsonian Folklife Festival on the Mall in Washington, D.C., a Romanian virtuoso named Dumitru Farcas (accent marks missing) played the taragot, which is a Romanian/Hungarian variant of an oboe which has become a folk instrument in those countries since the beginning of the 20th century. So it IS a folk instrument, at least in the right hands/mouths. --Charlie Baum |
