Subject: Australian folk songs From: Lowcountry Date: 30 Jun 99 - 07:19 PM I've noticed there are a good many Aussie Mudcatters but have not seen much about Aussie folk music. Tell me a little about Aussie folk music, its origins, its variations, its counterparts in American and English styles, some good examples, etc., etc. I am mostly interested in the serious, the melodious, the stirring, the romantic. Thanks for any information. |

Subject: RE: Australian folk songs From: Alan of Australia Date: 30 Jun 99 - 10:18 PM G'day, The influences in Aussie folk song include the Irish origins of many of our earliest immigrants, our convict origins, our bushrangers and our farming, especially sheepshearing. If you type @Aust* into the search box at the top of this page you will find many examples. There are also Aussie versions of English, Scottish & Irish folk songs, e.g. Child ballad "Barbara Allen"; "Shickered As He Could Be" is a version of "Seven Nights Drunk". There are also a large number of poems by people like Henry Lawson & Banjo Paterson which have acquired tunes via the folk process. e.g. have a look at the Waltzing Matilda site. There are a number of web sites you could look at click here
