Today on CBC's Mainstreet program (4-6PM Mon-Friday), Clary Croft announced a special 10 week series. Starting next Tuesday, the first Tuesday of July, Clary will be talking about and singing some of the songs from the Helen Creighton Collection.

This means that over the summer, to celebrate the Centenary of Helen Creighton's Birth, he will select songs which were collected by Dr. Helen Creighton throughout the Maritimes. The special series airs during the 5PM-5:30PM portion. Usually shows up between 5:18PM to 5:23PM.

All times are Atlantic Daylight Savings Time

Why do I think this is important to tell you here? Well, Mainstreet from CBC Halifax is available on the internet! So, you don't have to be here in Nova Scotia to hear it!Today's Mainstreet Program in RealAudio

Thanks! Now, there is another great "netradio" dial I can tune to! Will definitely try to catch this when it is on.

Peter, there have been enthusiasts across Canada who celebrate Helen Creighton. There are things happening every year, thanks to the Helen Creighton Folklore Society.

If you're in Canada, please write to your MP, and your MLA, and Canada Post, and see if ANY of them can explain why a stamp to celebrate her Centenary Birthday is not on the books! One of Canada's best kept secrets is Helen Creighton. I would estimate that except for the handful who are into Folk Music or Folklore in general, no one in Canada knows who she is!

The Helen Creighton Folklore Society will be holding a Helen Creighton Day on July 18th, at Uniacke House, just outside of Halifax, Nova Scotia. Besides this, there are plans to participate in the Canadian Storyteller's Conference held in Halifax at the end of July. Also, during the Word on the Street Festival in Halifax in late September, there will be a cake and special events to celebrate Helen Creighton's Birthday.

Dear George, I knew about the society, etc., but didn't know about the Centenary -- thanks for the information. Why Canada's real history keeps going down the rathole...... As my mother used to say about Ireland, Canada is a country that can break your heart.
yours, Peter T.
